Not the team, I have been following. For three years in a row we finished top four. Pretty consistent for me.

In 23, We would have beaten cwood and won another flag had Gus not been knocked out. And Jake Melksham playing his best footy went down before our finals, and he was probably our best fwd at the time.

22 was a decent follow up from our flag. It was then our fwd line issues began to appear. I felt that Jackson had already checked out and gave us little in those finals along with BBB playing on one leg. Tmac who had a stellar year in the first half lost his form as a fwd in the second half and didn't play finals. So those three talls out or down were the main reason for straight set losses. The year prior explained above for me.

I'll acknowledge our last two years have been inconsistent but we have had a tough run of injuries and other factors. And some strange recruiting of players that had already played their best.

But I am on board for a change in coach.

It's just about fresh thinking and possibly some new enthusiasm. Simon does get very set in his ways and I think we could use a coach that takes more risks. I guess after such success our standards have changed and two years of no finals, assuming the worst this year, is a litmus test for a new coach for me.

But credit must be given to Goody for the success we have had. If we don't make finals this year then he will most probably be unceremoniously dumbed next year.

It's not the end of the world if he is still there next year but, on balance the grass is probably greener with a new coach. Some of his selections lately have been questionable and ultimately our forward line issues have to be accounted for by someone.

Then again, I really believe we will win tomorrow and maybe, just maybe he will turn things around. ( Again).

i would argue we have been consistent for the majority of the last five years...

we were consistently good 2021-23

we've been consistently average in 2024-25

Pushed the ladder leaders to one point, and probably deserved a win today. Reckon we (and him) are on the right track.

No one wants to hear the labour pains, just show me the baby!

I came to this street after the game, wind there would be [censored] blaming this on Goodwin. Goodwin clearly won the coaching battle. His plans completely nullified Elliott and Hill, and stopped the Collingwood run pretty much in its tracks for most of the time. Not his fault that we can't kick fit goal, And lost free kicks 29 to 20. Or that Max did an absolutely terrible kick at a crucial time. But go ahead and bag Goody....

But it’s bad kicking every week

Ever since 2022

Close enough is not good enough….

WE LOST!

His coaching today was excellent. We lacked the polish and composure, that’s why we lost, that and the umpires. I’d say MaCrae, everyone’s darling was outcoached today.

Today isn't the day for flogging the coach.

All attention ought be directed to the maggots.

Yes ...much we can improve..

But the umpiring was the real difference today.

Do we praise him for the effort the players showed

or criticise him for the players lack of composure

the coach is important

but its the players that cross the white line and play the game.

Goody is not telling them to bomb into our i50

and its not his fault our list have all the composure of bambi on an ice rink

Very good question.

I wonder if the players were somewhat amazed to be there ..near the end... and just bottled it ??

No.

The Collingwood side benefit from a little more class in their top end and a little more nous with their experienced guys but they’re absolutely more well drilled.

They win some, they manage others and they lose few.

If goody was a great coach, this could also be his trademark but it isn’t. His trademark sat around a game plan but it hasn’t evolved or adapted since he came a head coach.

I mean is it Goodwin telling them to bomb in long as per the years prior, or is he now telling them not to and they aren’t listening to him?

We burn chances at hitting a target for a long bomb to a contest (mostly outnumbered) like no other club ever has.

Why are we always outnumbered? Because every coach knows we still bomb long, occasionally we get out head right and play smart, mostly it’s under 10s slam it on the boot stuff.

But he ain’t being sacked this year or this off season. We can’t afford to pay him out, so buckle up and “enjoy?” The ride.

I think this has been happening for long enough to say that it is the coaching and it is our game plan. Bomb it in long has been our hallmark.

It's the coach.

It's his game plan and it hasn't changed.

Its up to the coach to enforce standards

Including systematic compliance with game plan and directions

1 or 2 c0c|k ups are ok but lots = off to Siberia for a week

Maybe? Maybe not..

but based on the naked eye and evidence, its a very consistent pattern of behaviour. Don't think the words" let's bomb it into our forward 50 at all costs" is ehats coming out of Goodwins coaching but i have no doubt there is an element that the players are coached into doing this week in, week out in some form.

Agree that today's effort doesn't justify this thread being brought up.

He is a great defensive coach and has lost his last 2 ball movement coaches to head coaching roles. That is where id be looking

Apropos

One of the criticisms he has faced is lack of adaptability. What about giving him credit for the brilliant move of Langdon onto Nick Daicos?

Isn’t this a massive failure of Goodwin? Because we have been doing this for how long now? He’s clearly not telling them to do it but yet we do, why can’t he teach them not to?

Not to mention playing in the tropics last week.

Be very surprised if Goody has something to do with that.

Insofar as we continue to prioritise territory, the inefficiency issues are in part on Goodwin.

But at the end of the day he can’t execute the plan or the kicks on the field, that’s up to the players. He can’t be there to hold Fritsch’s hand when he marks 15m out but plays on without looking. He can’t be there to mark Gawn’s errant kick into the corridor.

We all know our list is riddled with players who are poor kicks. Under pressure, their poor kicking comes to the fore, and their instincts (bang it, because I can’t hit a short target) take over. Hence the repeated losses of close games.

I really don't know if its the players or the coach

If we had McCrae and his coaching ticket would they be able to instil composure and improve our skills execution.

I don't know the answer

but if the answer is yes, and the brains trust at the MFC think there is a coach out there that can improve us in these departments then the change should be made.

Skills ... who's that on ?

I'm asking generally as this is a major concern.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
