Respect is warranted 100%. You’d just hope that Goody will call a spade a spade and see his time is up and we agree to an amicable end and move on if the results don’t fall our way sooner rather than later.

Remember Neeld?

I was not a fan however, I never blamed him like others did.  The players also copped the wrath and the club itself was a mess back then

So I don't like scapegoating

For instance, for the first time in quite a while, I was really disappointed with the players today

Not to a point where there is a lack of trust, but I didn't like what I saw

We're you happy with the players effort, energy, enthusiasm and endeavour today?

You can answer with an evaluation as well if you like (all the E's)

I think it should be end of the season. Goodwin deserves that he won us a premiership and it just gives the interim coach false hope. Longmire is our man and Goodwin should see out the year. I tell you who else should go? Chaplin been around forever and is our forwards coach. When the hell has he been a forward? He's teaching the like of Turner and van Rooyen forward craft when he has never been a forward. Our forward line has been a weakness forever and we refuse to pick up a forward coach that has actually played as a forward. BAZAAR

It is strange. Perhaps it’s soft cap issue and we are just trying to make ends meet until we free up a bit of cash.

North probably played their best game for years (today) ... credit to them

But we didn't turn up and to be quite frank, the players should hand back whatever money they got paid for today's insipid performance

Reality is,it will always be easier to sack one coach than overhauling your list of A grade players.

I don't look for easy options.  Besides which, A Graders can be traded.  And there might come a time when that happens in season (trading)

Get the value back in season

The coach can weild the axe too.  Make a statement

I would dare say, win a final or bust. Let's remember we are 0-4 in finals since 2022.

Fair enough but I'm not sure the club will be listening to you anyway (nor me for that matter)

I get it, you and a few others here want your pound of flesh but it's highly unlikely that things will pan out your way

I agree with that, but why was the whole team disinterested? If it was 1-2 players then that is on them.

But when it’s the majority of the team, from the first bounce, it’s got to be on the Coach as well

The Gameplan they have been given is not working, and it looked like the players have had enough

Of course it's both but not one aspect only (or the other)

And the players who let us down aren't below average players as they were during the Neeld era

They can play and are highly rated players playing well below their best.  On top dollar too

If it was up to me I'd drop 6 players and make a statement (didn't Danners do that occasionally?)

GOOOOOORRNN

Players not near good enough yesterday. We are obviously on the decline.

Goody hasn’t demonstrated he can evolve his coaching.

we’re not in a good situation

Let’s see how the season pans out but with tassy coming into the comp some big decisions around personnel and coach to take us forward will need to be made at the end of the year

about our forward setup it is [censored] abysmal, the fact it continues the same as it has for 2-3 years without being fixed is evidence it is by design which is as you said baffling.

Thank you.

Someone's head should roll. Surely.

I really don't know that much about footy but I certainly know that we have done absolutely nothing to fix our fwd line set up.

Credit for trying the Grundy experience but we let him go and didn't bring in any replacement.

It's just baffling

That would be my trigger point ET I said so at the season start! Zero and six Goodwin gone

I don't know about the players "not turning up" yesterday. They had a crack but were off their game by a bit and the Roos were on. We got run over in the final quarter but that's a long way from not turning up at the first bounce.

I get criticised for suggesting the coach should be held accountable for performance but who else makes the plans and never reacts or learns from his mistakes?  Who else is responsible for preparing and inspiring a team when it doesn't show up and mostly seemed lost?

I know it's the first five rounds and strange results occur, but from early on that game looked dodgy and we weren't trying very hard.  We were missing tackles and North's inaccuracy kept us in it.  We showed no pride.

They're professional players and they want to succeed and win so if we're sick of the same ould shyyte they must be too.  Then again it was the midfielders not the coaches lofting high kicks to an an outnumbered contest with a dominant defender. But who let them persist with that and didn't get them to spread or even the numbers?  It was the coach and staff.

Forget all the lovey dovey stuff, we can only judge by what we witness and it's really bad.

He’s time's up not sure why he’s contract was extended a 2nd time after the flag, he flipped the game plan back to the old one mid season in 24 & now has a new one, which failed miserably against a bottom side, discussing Gawn issues at a presser is bs keep it in house or don’t play him, in 2022 refused to use Casey players &  manage our best who hobbled into finals , Bedford left for this reason, refused to play Grundy in the finals and had Schace as back up for Gawn. Playing Oliver instead of making him earn his spot via Casey last season. Our best player Trac supposedly wanting out due to culture issues, this lays at the feet of Goodwin

Like most of us, Goodwin could see it coming. I switched off halfway through the third. Watched the first 4 minutes of the 4th... North was looking for a scalp. Good on them. They weren't nearly as bad last year as their win:loss record shows. They turned a corner yesterday. I'm happy for their supporters. We all know what that was like. Yesterday for them was probably like our win against Hawthorn in 2016. That was our turning point as a club.

I'm not enamoured with Turner, Johnson, Jefferson or JVR.  Maybe we could try Kentfield?

Kentfield, I have a rap on. He just needs good coaching, loves a contest, has a good football instinct, but needs time; get Hawkins or someone like him down there to mentor these young players, same for JVR, Turner regarding Jefferson, I'm not sure if he will make it.

Are you talking about next week? Kentfield is still recovering from pneumonia, he probably won’t play a game for another month or so

Worst, it was extended before finals in 2023. He had a lot to prove in my opinion.

The people claiming we're stuck on the old game plan are driving me nuts.

Against North we had half a dozen goals directly against us due to errors made through overzealous or misjudged attempts to hurry the ball through the middle or play on aggressively from defence. Players caught from behind, running themselves into trouble, being too ambitious with a kick, handballs off to a run-past while still unsteady landing after a mark. It all happened.

The errors at high speed up the middle exposed our defence and prevented us from getting the priceless fast inside 50s. Multiple scores missed out on, and multiple scores against us, and very high fatigue (physically and psychologically) from having to sprint both ways without reward or comfort.

It's not rocket science.

The effort to fundamentally change the gameplan was on full display and on Sunday the team struggled to complete it all day and then imploded in the final quarter.

It's a tale as old as time, and often told by impending premiership teams, too.

I'm as annoyed at the club right now as the next person. The players and to a lesser extent the coach.

But I can't go in on Goodwin right now and demand his head, not after Rd 2. Sorry but after renewing for another year at high prices I want something to go to the G and watch for the next couple of months at very least without having to deal with a new coach and media circuses that follow it. I'll be damned if we're going to dismiss a guy after Rd 2, may as well go to Hawaii for the year.

He's got at least half the season to show that this club and gameplan is going somewhere. Big game this week against the Suns and a win with encouraging signs could be the start of the tide turning, a loss and no signs of evolvement and the water will get hotter. We can only wait and see.

In 2024 at the end of Round 3 we were sitting ok with 3 wins and 1 Loss.

Brisbane were 0-3 at that stage.

We finished 14th and they won the flag.

We should have won Round 1 - yesterday was insipid, but the knives should stay in the drawer for now

Goodwin bringing up Gawn's personal issues as an excuse for his performance was pretty ordinary. Maybe he thought it would protect Max from criticism this week but now there's a big spotlight on something private that wouldn't have been there had Goodwin said nothing.

At what point will you go in on him? What if we are 0-4 and cop a belting down at Geelong. That's a coach killer isnt it?

I wrote the following on Demonland in 2020... parts still ring true today.

The Curious Case of Simon Goodwin

He’s stubborn in his beliefs.

Inflexible when it comes to gameplan.

Barely shows emotion in the box.

Has unshakeable faith that the process will win in the end.

I’m talking about Simon Goodwin..I’m talking about Neil Craig.

Remember Neil Craig before he came to the Demons? He was the coach of the team nicknamed the “Crowbots” due to their persistence on playing a single brand of football regardless of the in-game situation.

The similarities between the two are striking. Craig

  • He's stubborn when it comes to his football philosophy.

  • Inflexible when it comes to the gameplan.

  • Not a match-day specialist coach.

  • Barely shows emotion in the box.

  • Has unshakable faith in sticking to the process regardless of the situation.

I could be talking about Simon Goodwin but i'm actually talking about Neil Craig.

It's quite clear to me now that Goodwin's coaching philosophy has been moulded by his experiences with Neil Craig.

Craig's "Crowbots" were drilled to play a certain style (mainly numbers behind the ball with superior gut running)and never to stray from this for any reason. If you jump on the Bigfooty website, you can read threads on Neil Craig that sound exactly what we are saying about Simon Goodwin 13 years later. Take a look for yourselves: https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/neil-craig.368842/page-10.

Whilst Craig is without question Goody's greatest influence when it comes to coaching philosophy (as well as personally)  it is time that Goody's takes a leaf out of the Malcolm Blight playbook. I mean he only coached Goody to 2 flags in his first 31 games. I'm not saying that he suddenly throws Steven May forward a.k.a Shane Allen in 97' but he has to step outside his comfort zone of process/ stubbornness and for the rest of this year and next thrown in some creativity/ uncertainty into his coaching.

Looking at Simon this might be a tough ask as it isn't in his demeanour to be outgoing or coach with flair. It's just not in his DNA. His body language suggest he's gone back into his shell as right now the process the club has invested in isn't working. You can see it in the coaches box every single time the camera cuts to him. His face has the look of "What do I do now?" before turning and quietly talking to an assistant coach.

The Goodwin / Craig combo worked as Goody was a workhorse who would prepare harder than anyone  at the club to drive him to success & Craig had the tools methodology that worked for him. Our team has too much natural talent to be stripped away but it nearly has.

The Crowbots made the prelim twice  in the first 2 years but never reached the same heights under Craig.

So where does that leave the Dees right now?

  • A team prepared to run harder & play quicker than anyone else but at the cost skill and execution.

  • A team that has been drilled to stick to the gameplan no matter what.

  • A coaching staff that lacks creativity at selection & game day.

  • A senior coach who shows no emotion in the box.

So Goody for the sake of your career...be less Craig and a little more Malcolm.*

*and maybe put Joel Smith forward to crash packs. Couldn't hurt!

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
