Greene ducking, the blatant push to may, Toby overstepping the mark to intercept McDonald. All resulted in goals.

Just take one of them out umps. I’m not asking for perfection. Just one. And we bloody win.

What is it in close finishes, though we did come from well behind?

Our best is good but our worst is bad.  Is that typical of clubs that finish 7th - 14th?  I must say we have had the luxury of not taking too much interest in those rankings that past 3 years.   What is needed to get more consistency?  We do have a classy list of youngsters McVee, Windsor, AMW, JVR, Chandler, maybe Turner, Howes, K Brown, Sestan, and yes Bowey if he can get a clear run at preseason and get over his injury which has impacted him significantly:  is it youth and inexperience under pressure that is costing us?

I note that it is mathematically possible to reach 7th, if we keep winning, and if we can get 8 on the trot it is 🏆.  But when should we look ahead to 2025 and never again play those who will not take us there, including but not exhaustively  Billings, McAdam, FullArton?

Where was everyone? 16k crowd is pathetic.

Maybe we’d get a few more free kicks if the ones whinging on this forum had the nurries to turn up and support the club.

Why can’t we seal these close games 🤷‍♀️

If we lose to GWS by 2pts at the G and no one is there does it count?

What on earth was going on with our setup at centre bounces in the last quarter? Often Max would tap to the front and we'd have 2 mids on the back side. GWS 8-0 in centre clearances in the last. Is this down to coaching?

I heard a lot of people watching the Olympics? Not sure if true.

Season 2024 done boys.

I think the club would be better served with a high draft pick (top 6) than a place in the top 8, where we will most likely lose in the first game anyways.

The question is, how should we use that pick?

In addition to this question what type of players should we be targeting during trade period?

I reckon the podcast could use some background music this week with the season seemingly done n dusted

Hi gents,

I’ve been watching some of the early games from 2024 this week and hadn’t realised how many of inside 50s went through Petracca.
Undoubtedly he is out most crucial player and his loss has left a big hole in the team without a real backup. My question is, if you were the list manager would you look to recruit a young midfielder with out first pick, or a tall defender?

Number one for score involvements in the AFL by some margin when he got injured.

There were supposedly rumours about May and Lever being injured prior to the game.

Does the panel think we’ve got any players carrying injuries into games (circa 2022) other than perhaps Max Gawn?

It seems to be this part of the season where so many players are carrying niggles or injuries they can play through but must remedy at the close of the season.

Can we have a discussion about centre clearances.  I concede that there is nuances around centre clearance, that mean winning every centre clearance isn’t necessary, especially if the opposition kick dirty ball in that we can intercept and slingshot from.

But I don’t think it’s any coincidence that the first quarter saw us win some centre clearance, get territory and then lock it in with pressure resulting in a fairly dominant quarter.

Post 1st quarter The Giants then were able to get on top in the middle.  This is a repeat pattern that opposition is winning clearance but are getting cleaner entries than we would like, putting our defence under way too much pressure.

I can concede we have had injuries, But we have the premier ruckman in the comp and our midfield cattle is good.

Is this an Yze vs Mcqualter thing or what is going on in the centre clearances.

Great question.  Clearances weren’t great under Adem either.

But this also  raises a serious question - what is McQualter’s real role and what changes has he instituted to improve our performance?

I've done a ladder predictor and unfortunately I don't think we'll make the 8 now. I have us missing on %.

Never the less, I still think we're a very good side that is primed to play finals for a long time once we get Trac back and use any cap space on a replacement mid/utility to take Gus' role.

Bit worried about how we could go at Marvel against the hot dogs. What changes to the game plan can we expect on the smaller ground?

(First time caller etc.)

At the game (for the first time this year) I was really struck by the number of poor bounces at the centre square - I don't know if there are stats - but it felt like well over half the bounces were recalled.  This seemed more the case in the final quarter.
1) it felt like Max expended a fair amount of energy chasing rucks that were re-called,
and 2) the subsequent ball-ups/throws were pretty low and went straight to a ground ball.
Both of these elements would (in my opinion) biase a team with a dominant ruck (especially with Clayton out on his feet - but anyone who bags his effort need to take AGHL)

It's not a conspiracy theory - but I felt it really played against us on the night.

thoughts...?

What I liked:

  • the first quarter
  • the comeback effort
  • we are still in it with the future entirely in our hands

What I disliked

  • 2.5 quarters of poor 2 way running and efforts
  • the weather (it was Arctic there!)
  • 0-8 centre clearances
  • the umpiring
  • Losing

We have lost out on playing finals by 0.5% one year not long ago.  results are all over the place, and we are still in it.  We are not our old ruthless selves and cant string 4 quarters together.  What do we need to do to turn this ship around? Can we do it this year or will we simply not be good enough?

We haven't had many opportunities to see Laurie play a full game in the midfield. How did you rate his performance particularly as a replacement to Sparrow? Do you think he will hold his spot on the back of this game and Sparrow's 30 disposal performance for Casey?

Thank you boys for your efforts on the podcast during this disappointing season. It can't be easy fronting up each week after some of these loses particularly after the successful home and away seasons of the past 3 years.

I'm really loving what I have seen from Andy Moniz-Wakefield. I think we have found a real gem here. I believe he is a category B rookie. What's his contract status? Does he need to be elevated to the list or does he can he remain a rookie?

I still cant  look at that without wanting to frikn shout . That’s just so blatant it’s ridiculous. Turner pinged at the other end for far less. One day soon a decision like that is going to affect a GF result against a big club and then watch the changes roll out.

You can also add the one where Tom Green was clearly in the 5 metre protected area when Petty marked on 50. Would have been a certain goal.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
