Between the big name players fumbling under pressure and the administration fumbling under pressure we've produced one of the great downfalls from the high of 2021.

If the club thinks we need to make playing personnel changes in order to become a better football club then in theory I guess we should trust them. Trouble is their approach to player management over the past 12+ months has been nothing short of bizarre. Everything they apprently do seems to work to drop the value of our players and weaken any negotiating power.

If we end up paying one our greatest ever players to play his peak years at another club, while receiving bugger all back, then the club is going to see a backlash rarely seen before. And coming off a foundation that really isn't built to weather that kind of storm I think this is going to end really badly.

My gut feel now is that we need to move on the clowns who are driving our current method of managing the players and try to get all our stars back in the fold and on the same page.

    So much of this story is confusing. 

    Do we want to trade him, or not?

    Does he want out, or not?

    The fact that it’s so unclear is in itself an issue. We have repeatedly demonstrated a complete inability to control any narrative about our club.

    Clarry at Geelong, with their culture and ability to support players, will win a Brownlow. 

    They are a club that doesn't drop their load every time a player gets a little too ummm 'happy' at a nightclub in the middle of the week. They know how to keep their standards, without demanding perfection from players. They support each other from top to bottom. Chris Scott, an annoying [censored] that he is, would take a bullet in the media for his players. 

    This is a club that knows how to SHUT UP and get on with it.

    We would have to be properly dumb in the head to send him to Geelong of all places.

    This is exactly how I feel about the situation. If Geelong think he is worth pursuing, Why don’t we want to keep him ? Particularly when we will get severe unders and still probably have to pay some of his wage. You need an elite midfield to win a flag , without Oliver we don’t have that.

    We don’t seem to be attracting anyone else of note to fill the void this post season. So where are we at then ? Are we saying we are rebuilding ? 
     

    We all know that can take a lot of time and that’s if we get it right with recruiting the right kids. It’s a real concern if we can’t land anyone of note in this trade period, Its really hard to see how we are in a better list position next year compared to this year at the moment unfortunately.

    Clarry should’ve asked Rhys why he only took 1 mark and had 3 kicks in the second half of the Prelim after Big O’s arm fell off and if the Cats are gonna try playing a ruckman next year.. 

    Long way to go before any trades happen, bit early for the panic merchants to have everyone sacked already, there won’t be anyone left to sign the paperwork in trade week

    If Clarry goes, there is a reason and it would be fair to assume, most if not all on DL probably are unaware of it, so let’s hope if he goes we get fair compensation and take a breath.

    I am not happy either as he is my favourite Dees player but it will be what it will be.

    I just don’t see a trade to Geelong happening.

    A. Geelong don’t have the currency, their first round pick is too low and with Smith and Clarry a future first is likely to be the same or worse.

    B. What currency they do have is going into Smith first. 

    C. We are low on quality mids and Clayton’s value is at an all time low. 
     

    D. He has a huge, multi million dollar contract and if we want him to stay he stays.
     

    E. If there’s any credence to the idea we’re pushing him out it’s idiotic. It would be a colossally stupid decision and the fact the club made a statement within a day of it coming out saying he’s staying tells me they know this. 
     

    I’m taking a break from footy media until the end of trade week. They’ll probably throw up five more of my favourite MFC players who are disgruntled and leaving in the next two weeks as they clearly hate Pert, Goody and the club and are sticking the boots in. They’ve been waiting three years for our on field performance to drop so they could. The media is so Geelong friendly there is no doubt some of this is Geelong sensing weakness and trying to make it happen through their media mates. 

    The sad thing is this has been the most successful period of my lifetime and yet the footy media coverage has been so negative since 2022 it’s been so difficult to fully enjoy it. What the AFL media is doing to us MFC fans through this period can never be forgiven. All clubs have issues, maybe we’re a basket case, only time will tell but these media [censored] have done everything in their power to make the last three years totally unenjoyable for us and it’s a disgrace. The treatment of Essendon through the drug scandal was more friendly in the media than this!! I have no doubt the back end of this year crowd numbers and this years memberships were badly tarnished by the constant negative critique of our club. Shameful, clearly some people just hate having a successful MFC or MFC supporters enjoying football.

    I think you answered your own question. He explores the idea then decides to stay at the dees like many players have done before. That's how I imagine that would go as it has often been in recent times.

    Not at all. It will have to be a multi-club deal in both situations I would imagine that will involve other clubs' first round picks and swaps of all kinds. Let the circus begin.

    Its fairly obvious that the Melbourne Football Club has devoted substantial resources in assisting Oliver with his non football issues in 2023 and likely before. Sometimes patience runs out and a clean start with a clean slate may be best option. Will the clean start work? Time will tell.

    It was just an observation that whilst we're supposedly looking to sell a metaphorical farm the Cats might be trying to entice Clarry with an actual farm. The fact that I have to explain it shows that it wasn't a very good joke.

    During the 57 years we were non-flag winners, I always thought that what we lacked were about 4 absolute star players.

    Finally, by 2021, we had them!

    Let's get rid of the lot! That seems like a pretty good idea!

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie? 
      Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact.
