This reminds me of the hoo haa when we got lever. which went on all the way until we won a flag. No one bats ย an eye at that deal now.

yeah, pretty different circumstance

i equate it more like when we got steve may in terms of his experience; houston is arguably more 'credentialed' (all oztrayan last year) than may was when he joined us

it worked out well, but only cos we traded one bloke - hogan - and ended up with two premiership players in may and sparrow

Absolutely agree, we need to ensure we have a good amount of young talent in these next two drafts for when the Tassie team gobble up all them top 10 picks.

I think it depends on where we see our list doesnโ€™t it DJ? I mean are we challenging now? Remembering weโ€™re probably ย in the ย last 2 years of maximus and possibly May. Plus as importantly , do they think oliver and trac return at close to full rat power? or not? ย If the answer to either of those questions is no then we donโ€™t trade away picks fr a 27 year old. . If itโ€™s yes on both scores then surely we prob do?ย

Someone will pay that. Hope its not us.

Carlton need defenders and have a magic money tree somewhere.

This and this, West Coast scenario when they felt they had one more two year tilt left in the list and gave up 3 picks to get Tim Kelly is very much a buyer beware for what they are suggesting Houston would cost us

I don't think we can afford to invest too much more in the window at the expense of the future. Dollar investment maybe but we need quality youngsters via the draft.

For 28 year olds that is what the free agency is all about. Houston chose to sign long term so I have little sympathy.

Full rat power? Really??

Channeling David King?ย  WTF even is full rat power

Cal and Riley on Gettable think two first rounders would be a fair price. He's a gun but not sure giving up that much for a soon to be 28 year old would be great business.ย

It's always two firsts when it's the Dees needing to come up with something. FFS what did WE get for Luke Jackson again, a player who had 10 years to give? Is Houston a comparable player?ย ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

We got two firsts and a second for Jackson.

Luke Jackson is a bit player

Getting 2 firsts and second for him was incredible business

With "10 years to give"

Houston is 28 next year. How can he possibly be worth two firsts? He's not Bontempelli

I think it's questionable Tassie will go hard at the draft. They will bring in experience and ready talent to compete immediately.ย

Is a first round pick and a future first pick significant? We expect to finish higher next year with Houston in the side so it shouldn't cost us much in the long run unless we do a Collingwood and fall away dramatically like the Schultz deal.ย

I think so too. He is athletically gifted, but Iโ€™m afraid he lacks a bit between the ears.

Itโ€™s too much to give away to a player that only has 4-5 years to give. If this was 2 years ago, do it without battering an eye.ย

I think itโ€™s a 1st and a F2 at most.ย

What are you talking about? He's a gun. It's not like Max is an intellectual giant. If you're prepared to work hard and you have elite attributes, you'll be a star. (and your body doesn't let you down)

Watching LJ pants us the other day was less painful because he helped us win a flag, and I don't believe Freo have a game style that will hold up in finals. They might be able to defend, but you can't rely on uncontested possessions to generate all your scores. Their midfield is quick, but small. If you bring pressure and physicality, you'll have a chance of beating them up around the ball.

When you play like us the other day, listless, unaccountable, soft, you allow them to get out into space and carve you up, leaving your own defenders no chance.

LJ will be a top 20 or 30 player IMO.

Heโ€™s exactly what we need, an athletic ruck/forward who can crumb his own ball.ย

Agree wholeheartedly with your first paragraph, but disagree wholeheartedly on your second.

Not only are Freo the best contested possession and clearance team in the competition this season, their differential for both stats is the best the AFL has ever seen since they began to be recorded.ย

Good luck "beating up" Sean Darcy, Nat Fyfe, Hayden Young and Andy Brayshaw around the ball. Serong's the only midget, but he's a tough little bugger too.

If we can get Houston for a first round pick (ideally next year's) and add Cumming via FA, and add a young mid from the draft, we could look a whole lot different next year.

But, I think it will see us shift the game style again, probably double down on the transition game from the first half of the year. Hopefully a year of practicing the transition game in pressure games will hold us in good stead for 2025.

Goody also has a history of being at the forefront of the shift in game styles and the general evolution of the game. The defensive diamond, the use of inside sliders, the emphasis on post clearance pressure etc, so I wonder if it'll have some new tweaks rather than an evolutionย of Collingwood's transition model.

Yeah the I'm a huge fan of Cumming and glad we're targeting him. Have watched him closely and even last year he really got them going off half back last year.

He's a high end talent when fit.

Spot on!!!

Now that this is gathering steam - how much is too much for Houston?ย

Clearly a first rounder is unders, but two first rounders seems like overs, and Iโ€™d be loathe for the club to miss out on the first round for two years in a row

Plus we still need to add to our young midfield bridge - can we afford to trade our first pick and take a punt on a midfielder or two in the second round? Itโ€™s a deep draft so maybeย

1st + 2nd

The 1st rounder for Hoston + the 2nd as steak knives given his contractual status

Hopefully it's a 2025 first rounder if we don't make finals this year

Yeah, he'll be 28 in May next year. Coughing up two first rounders for someone who could start slowing down and succumbing to soft tissue injuries after only a couple of seasons for us would be crazy.

After a hard-fought first half in slippery conditions, the Dees came out in the second half and showcased their trademark superior class, piling on four goals in the third termand never looked back.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
