Totally on board with this. The guy is pure silk. Cut from the same shiny cloth as the previous Silk at the Hawks.

Agree with poster above's comments as well in regards to comparisons to Pendles. He just finds space and always does something good with the ball. And when he needs to, turns on the speed and glides (dare I say a bit like silk).

They already call him silk at the footy club after Burgoyne.

Fitting nickname..

Unfortunately, no matter how many times you give Stringer a bath, he'll still stink.

I also want to quietly slip in that not every gun half-back needs to be turned into a midfielder. I'd be perfectly happy for McVee to take up the Corey Enright status as 'the most underrated 6-time All-Australian in the competition', even as Rivers becomes the new midfield Burgoyne.

I guess we'll know in about 250 more games.

Apparently the club is releasing a new movie in his honour:

Coaches Votes

McVee got                        5 and 4

Martin got                         1 and 5      or     4 and 2   no idea what coaches gave what

or Rivers  got                    1 and 5      or     4 and 2   no idea what coaches gave what

Kossy  got                         3 and 1

McKay got                        0 and 3

Langers got                       2 and 0

Thats how I saw it, willing to be contradicted  and what coach gave what  NFI.

I dont think there is any other combination.

The most amazing thing about McVee is the flick-of-a-switch manner in which he came on. He spent his first year in 2022 kicking around in the VFL and never got close to being picked. Has a massive ‘23 pre-season, gets picked in round 1, makes immediate impact and never looks back. It’s hard to imagine him not being there now.

From memory he had an injury plagued season in his draft year but had been tracking for an early pick before that.

He’s the best thing to come out of Covid (except working from home). Went under the radar due to injury and also little to no exposure in junior levels.
Picked up as a rookie. A rookie!
I reckon he will be in the top 10 players in his draft year right now.

This kid is a gem - natural footballer with vision, poise and skill. His understanding of positioning and game play is perfectly suited to defense at the moment and it would be wrong to remove that for 'possible' midfield time. It feels like we would be robbing Peter but Paul wouldn't get the same value. At least not yet.

Having said that, his kicking is ridiculously precise and effective and I drool at the thought of him delivering it inside F50, so I think the move to the midfield in 2 years or so will be irresistible.

We will rob Peter to pay Paul, and Paul will become a billionaire 😍

I remember being slightly bemused when he got #4.

Might end up being the best #4 we've seen since the Red Fox

Wasn't it the pre preseason learning running with his grandad at Geraldton that he attributes to his sudden development?  He certainly became an immediate lock in selection - great pick up, and great self dedication to his craft.

I would an agree a high quality half back who can think his way through and deliver with precision is absolutely essential.  Unless AMV (smaller) or Blake Howes cements that spot, or Bowey returns to his best, I would leave him to become a backline leader especially as May and Lever inevitably slow down and move on over the next half decade.  I realise he will not replace them as positional players, but he oozes leadership.

He was in Sheehan's under 16 team best 22.  Also had great draft write-ups where to me he sounded like Salem.

I get why i/state clubs missed him but for some insane reason Freo and WCE walked right on by, to our enormous benefit.

I really agree with this.  Some teams have one of their very best players in that role.  Lachie Witfield (GWS) and Hayden Young (Freo) come to mind.

He would probably make a very good midfielder but he may be more valuable where he is especially once Salem slows.

He reminds me of TJ, effortlessly glides over the surface.  He has great vision which really helps in hitting targets.

That wouldn't be the same Hayden Young who is averaging a touch under 70% centre bounce attendances for the year would it

He has gone to the midfield but as i recall it he had a key role defence for a number of years.  Memory could be failing ...😊

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
