I am going to start a petition to get umpire 22 sacked. Seriously there isnโ€™t a fan in the AFL who thinks this fool is a competent umpire. A disgrace.ย

Cmon he wasnโ€™t tripped, he dived. Could see he had no options forward and didnโ€™t want to turn it over, In hindsight if he wanted the boundary handball it of the Lions leg

That not true. Had two lose team mates in front of him, just had to bounce handball to them

He panicked

A lot of posts about the inaccuracy. Confident we would have lost on xScore too. Each of the fourth quarter misses was a shot that on average gets kicked less than 50% of the time.ย

Itโ€™s still a problem, but in a game where our opponent was making the same sort of errors at the other end, Iโ€™m far more interested in our mindset, tactics and fitness.ย

Our inaccuracy cost us our 2023 premiership campaign.

It is the story of this Melbourne era and we've done nothing in rectifying the issue.

Sums it all up.

Petty 4.13 for the year now.

After kicking 12.1 last year, wtf has happened?

Technique gone? Mental? Both?

Killed us tonight.

As a team, 4 behinds in last two final quarters. What message are they getting at 3/4 time?

Maybe he has other things on his mind for next season like Jackson did in his last season with us.ย

Most of us probably expected a 10 goal loss. We lost by 5 points to a good side interstate. We have so much to be proud of despite being equally devastated that the result didnโ€™t go our way (thank you umpires).ย

Weโ€™re a long way off sure but we played better in that second quarter than we for a long time.ย

We deserved to win this game.ย

I think weโ€™re all feeling a bit like the North supporters after their last fortnight.ย

I reckon he over balanced but I don't blame the umpire for paying it.ย

There were several others though that were complete BS

No I donโ€™t blame the umpire it was blatant deliberate. Although they could have squared up for the poor deliberate OOB call on Rivers in the second (only joking)

Gut wrenching.ย
ย

We have a massive issue with our mental weakness. How many games in the last couple of years have we been up in and had relatively easy shots at goal and havenโ€™t taken the opportunities.ย
ย

That was a much improved performance with lots of youngsters but our fitness still not good enough.ย

Thats the most gutted and upset I've been after any loss this year and its the proudest i've been of the boys effort in a fair while.ย

The intensity and the dare and the will to crack in at the contest i thought was excellent.ย

So frustrating that the game was for the most part officiated out of hands and very frustrating to go goaless in the last quarter but overall the game actually gives me hope going forward.ย

ย

Proud of the boys tonight. Iโ€™d say goals win games, and they do, but the Lions had +5 scoring shots & deserved to win. Patchy umpiring but itโ€™s not why we lost. Ran out of legs, shut down too early. 2.8 in 2nd half (no goals in Q4). Thatโ€™s not good enough. But we showed signs of life, and thatโ€™s something. If we can play with that pressure we can fight for finals then who knows? Thereโ€™s hope.ย

Onwards ๐Ÿ’™โค๏ธ

How many times will we [censored] the bed in front of goal before we admit itโ€™s a massive issue that just wonโ€™t go away magically?

Asking for a friend named Simonย

Well, that was unfortunate.

But, keen observers will recall that I have for a while had this game marked in as our last lost for the season.

So, chin up, it's all good from here.

Most of us probably expected a 10 goal loss at the first bounce.

We lost by 5 points to a good side interstate.

We have so much to be proud of despite being equally devastated that the result didnโ€™t go our way (thank you umpires).ย

Weโ€™re a way off our consistent best but we played better in that second quarter than we have for a long time.ย

We deserved to win this game. So many players stepped up big time for us.ย

I think weโ€™re all feeling a bit like the North supporters after their last fortnight.ย

Forward line coach obviously isn't helping him out a lot

Can the misses in the last quarter be simply down to fatigue? We were really run off our legs and couldn't lock it in 50 for long enough.

Possibly. Weโ€™re a young side but itโ€™s concerning that two weeks in a row post-bye weโ€™ve hit a wall late and let our opponent back in.ย

But even with the fitness and inaccuracy issues we had enough opportunity late to work it out and win it. The entire last 15 minutes was problematic after 2.5 quarters of doing a hell of a lot right.ย

A good effort when we all thought we will get owned. I was happy with our midfield performance in particular. We smashed them in contested possessions and won the clearances which is a great sign without Trac and Salem.ย

But bitterly disappointing to once again [censored] the bed in front of goal. Itโ€™s cost us games, finals and probably another premiership and itโ€™s infuriating.

Also a massive massive [censored] you to the AFL and the absolute hacks they employ to umpire our game. That Rivers goal should never have been disallowed. They absolutely cost us a win tonight and if we were a club that stood for anything we would question this one sided display. But we wonโ€™t. And so continues the endless cycle of [censored] umpiring costing teams games.ย

PS- great game from AMW!

PPS- all you Clarry detractors can eat my shorts

Lodged a complaint with the integrity department for Sh'ts and giggles, I dont' watch any other games anymore as the officiating is so bad its unwatchable. The issue was just the inconsistency of the rules, they didn't necessarily get a heap of dodgy frees, but they got 50/50's whereas we got none of those.

Clear discrimination against a side in light blue and Red and favouritism to Maroon and gold, similar to their gold colour. Evidence by the sheer favouritism and different interpretation of what is a mark, what is holding the ball and many other items, where only light blue and red people got punished and then in the next breath an identical behaviour by maroon and gold people was unpunished. This occurred on Friday night at the Woollongabba oval in Brisbane. I do think that the umpires may need to have their bank accounts and TAB/Sportsbet account (the most important item for the comp judging by the number of advertisements) and those of their wives and family looked into also.

A Farcical League.

Too many games being decided by incompetent umpiring decisions.

Steven May mark in the last quarter not paid. If it was correctly paid (see mark paid to Oscar McInerney earlier in the game) then we win the game.

If Trent Rivers changed his name to Harley Reid or Nick Daicos then his goal would have not been disallowed. We win the game.

A Melbourne player is penalised for running more than 15 meters (see above), yet marks are continually paid to Brisbane for kicks that travel less then 15 metres.

Collingwood were gifted the Preliminary final last year when the umpires ignored a number of high contact free kicks to GWS in the last few minutes of the game.

The executive general manager of football came out after the game and said umpires are not going to pay free kicks that are not there.

Despite these worrying signs I made a conscious decision to give A Farcical League one more season, but the pace of decline has only accelerated this year.

A fish rots from the head, and the game stinks. No longer worth investing any time/money/effort in it.

RIP AFL.

Agree on the may kick ins. The centre square is always empty , wish someone would run into it and May kicked to themย

That would require the coach to think of something different on the kick ins and I think thatโ€™s just too much of a stretch for him. Has his plans and sticks to him even though it doesnโ€™t always work. ย Very frustrating.ย

It is an issue, clearly, but all Iโ€™m saying is that I donโ€™t think it was the biggest one when Brisbane kicked 11.20. Unlike the two finals last year where we had more scoring shots, inaccuracy wasnโ€™t the big problem with us shutting down in the last quarter IMO.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the ย Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measlyย 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?ย  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where theyโ€™ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sundayโ€™s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullartonโ€™s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Caseyโ€™s three matches and, with Melbourneโ€™s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next weekโ€™s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forwardโ€™s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasnโ€™t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the teamโ€™s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourneโ€™s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season.ย There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight.ย Since that game, the Demonsโ€™ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the โ€˜G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sundayโ€™s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
