Geez we now have a lot of WA’s talent on our list, is it possible we are looking at a future trade for, possibly, the best midfielder going around. I’m still dirty on LJ going home, hopefully Harley wants too come home to his mums cooking too. Delusional, maybe, but having bargaining chips up the sleeve would help if my delusion came too fruition. It’s medicinal b4 you ask😜

Which player would you have selected in you were Jason Taylor? Put it on the record so you can gloat when that player smashes it in the next 6 months and you will get all the kudos on here for a few years.

SaadΒ El Hawli (23yo) is the one that looked the most ready made and could potentially play this season.
Half back/wing with speed to burn who has dominated in VFL.Β

That said, I'm very happy to haveΒ Kentfield.Β  My main disappointment with not getting El Hawli is that Essendon did, and they've already got a very handy player inΒ Sam Durham from a previous mid-season draft.

Lynch was a free agent and A-grader.

I am not saying good key forwards aren't valuable (albeit overrated), but the opportunity cost of drafting them is usually too high.Β

WC had very good KPs in 2018. Richmond brought in Lynch and he played in the 2019 and 20 flags. We went big at the other end and brought in Lever and May. Geelong had Hawkins and brought in Cameron. Even Collingwood brought in McStay.

All the recent flags have been won by teams who have seen the value of KPs. They're expensive to trade or contract in FA but they're indispensible. It's worth trying to draft some prospects.

He was playing in the WAFL 2’s 3 weeks ago. And is good for one mark a game so far in the seniors. I’d be shocked if he’s anywhere near an afl game this year. Obviously he has to show a bit to stay on the list and if he does well that’s great but this is a pick aimed for 2026 after 2 full preseasons at the earliest, not round 20

How I love the optimism you bring to each thread, it is refreshing.

We have drafted him, let's wait and see.

The Age write up on his profile … slightly underwhelming compared to bio write ups on other drafteesΒ

Luker Kentfield

Melbourne have added a promising player from the WAFL in Subiaco forward Luker Kentfield.

Also to clarify. Β He has kicked 1 goal in his last 5 games for Subiaco senior team. Β Just to calm the high expectations. Β He’s a speculative pick that will need time to develop. Β

Sounds like he has dealt with some injury issues and illness according to JT, which probably has impacted him.

He's a speculative key forward pick, as are pretty much all key position selections in any form of draft.

I’m genuinely excited by this pick β€” Kid has a crack as shown by highlights, def more of a JVR type than Jeffo type as in seems to be able to impact the contest with physicality and can pinch-hit in ruck. Coaches have all said he’s a ripper and that he’ll make an impact fast which is always a good sign.. Welcome to Demonland β€˜Kenter’ as I’m already calling him.. exciting prospect that I’m glad we called out.

Obviously you need good players everywhere to win a flag. But several recent teams have have been successful despite having weak key forwards (Melbourne, Collingwood, Richmond 2017, WB). And no premiership team has had a poor or even average midfield.

I think the model of bringing in established key position forwards (trade or free agents) rather than drafting them is the better one. It means you hit on your draft picks more often and get more early value (as smaller players seem to take less time to develop).

The other thing I would note is that the key position forwards we have actually been most successful with at the draft were actually initially seen as defenders (JVR, Petty, Smith, TMac and Turner). This shows to me that second efforts are particularly important.

BTW I hope Kentfield is Allen Jakovich II.

Like this lad the more you look into his worth.

Played seniors in the WAFLΒ  only 19,Β  has NOT playedΒ  for other AFL clubs so he has not been tried and found wanting

A clean slate,Β  with size and some ruck and forward ability.Β  Hoping they have found another rough diamond from WA.

Wow thats great😁

Really that’s a useless injured one legged kick half forward who played at two unsuccessful clubs at the time and frustrated supporters and fans alike.Β

How any one on the limited highlights could liken Luker other than name ( and part joking) to the most disappointing and wasteful half forward we ever recruited is beyond belief and in fact disgraceful.Β

He is a completely different player a KPForward not a flaky flanker and if his CV is truthful plays a bit like JVR crashing packs.Β

Good luck and welcome Luker to the mighty Dees.Β

I can remember Cowboy Neale not having much speed, either. Plus, he played with an alleged 27% body fat. However, true or false, he did kick a heap of goals as part of a well-rehearsed St Kilda forward line.Β

I dream of getting my body fat down to 27%.Β

Looking at his highlights reels he looks like a competent footballer and has some excellent size about him, hope he gets a good run at it at Casey and wins a contract extension. Good luck Luker.!!

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.Β
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards?Β Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?Β
