Clarry is a shadow of his former self from 2016/17 onwards this year.  He also started to lose some of his extraction work for whatever reason towards the end of last season, leaving that mostly to Viney from then onwards.

Shut Viney down effectively and we lack the ability for extraction and first use, especially with Clarry not firing at his previous level and Tracc up forward so much.  Having said that, Tracc is more or a receiver / clearance player than an extractor / first use type, but a very good one of course.

Sparrow has not come on as we might have hoped to fill the missing hole of Gus.  He occasionally plays a 'pass mark' game but then goes missing for massive chunks in a game like tonight.

And the mid field performance we watched tonight was after a 10 day break!

Unfortunately there's no one ready to come in from Casey as we speak (mid field wise) that might offer some improvement although i would def consider bringing in Moniz for Billings to play a HHF role and a close to goal role for Kozzy when he's running through the middle.

The other option is Sestan who kicked 4 for Casey but doesn't seem to have the four quarter tank and second efforts as yet.  Very good inside 50 though for a few quarters.

Neither of our two so called 'speed forwards' in Kozzy or Chandler  bothered the scorer tonight.

Add to that only 1 opportunist goal from one of our two KFs and you have yourself a recipe for disaster as we are too reliant on one player, Fritta, to kick most of our goals.

We also have a stubborn Coaching panel who seem hell bent on playing a plus one behind the ball instead of evening up the numbers at stoppage, even after witnessing that we are being beaten soundly in this area for the first few quarters.

Most oppos play a plus one at stoppage against us and its working to great effect this season in a number of matches.  To lose clearances badly most weeks and expect to counter that, plus some, by intercepting with your plus one off HB and outscoring the oppo that way is frought with danger and putting far too much pressure on your defenders and mids imho.

The game style needs to have a better balance of wins from stoppage vs so much reliance on the turnover game.  Especially when you aren't a very good transition team like us.

We were also more efficient going forward but not by a lot. Obvs with a lot less entries. 

I’m not a stats guy but this tells a story. They won by converting turnovers into goals. 

Fullarton should have played tonight not BBB, that would have allowed Petty to go back and try to curb their attack and he would have provided a chop out for Max.

I'm surprised we won the clearances. However, that stat doesn't mention the quality of the clearances. I think overall their clearances were cleaner.

I get your frustration but we didn’t lose it at selection 

by your own admission Fullarton wouldn’t have been the difference 

It probably looks like I am a dog with a bone regarding this BUT play Petty down back!!!

He’s not a forward.

We should lean into what we know we can do. Defend. Stack the defence and play a smaller, faster forward line until some bigger blokes start to demand selection. (I wouldn’t select Jefferson right now)

Lever is a known out but let’s assume JVR is available and Lingers is an automatic in.

Kynan Brown, I believe, could play a role for us to help retain the ball up forward. Langdon is vital to our structure and even though he is out of form and needs a run at Casey, I’d bring JVR in to replace BBB. Bowery needs to go back and get the ball 40 times and stick some tackles before coming back. I wouldn’t drop Howes but I would like to see him tried further up the ground for a week or 2.

Once Lever is healthy enough to come back I’d line up T-Mac to be replaced.

I don’t see how we can use the first 10 games as a launching pad to the ultimate success this year but we can teach some young players how to defend before re-loading for 2025.

Our midfield is overrated. A kid with 9 games just showed the world that fact. 

And to think this team is missing their key forward and best ball user. Who were we missing besides Lever? JVR has he even kicked 10 goals? Turner is still wet behind the ears.

We should have let Petty go to the Crows and given the kitchen sink for Reid. 
 

First time another team has done what they wanted with us for about four years. Since the Cairns debacle, we have either been in every game or had a real off day. The boys tried today, but a fitter, younger, hungrier team made them look old. Reid is worth the hype and we didn't have an answer. He made Oliver and Trac look like yesterday's news, just bounced off them. 

Our ressies are getting smashed every other week. We've got a bunch of absolute journeymen in and around the team, and no real hot talent to bring in with the exception of Tholstrup who looked a long way off and plays in a position we're well stocked in. 

Its 2024 and our tall forward options are Brown, Petty, van Rooyen, Fullarton, Turner, Schache, Jefferson. Just hopeless mismanagement when you look at it in the cold light of day. All our money is spent on the midfield and defence. The defenders were terrible but deserve a mulligan. The mids have been smashed around the ball all year. 

Unfortunately BBB an amazing contributor to our football club in the past 4 years is easily counteracted when the ball hits the ground.

On deeper reflection I thought the missing presence and importance of Disco and JVR was telling tonight.

Absolutely. I did notice that they always seemed to have a player ready to tackle/spoil any handball receiver from us the whole game. Was definitely a game plan of theirs and it nullified us.
