Steven May - 100 MFC Games

Recommended Posts

I couldn't see a thread on this topic, but by my calculations Steven May reaches 100 games for the MFC this weekend.

He has truly been a colossus for the club over the past five years (let's not talk about 2019), and pretty clearly we don't win a premiership in 2021 without him. Add in a couple of All Australians, regular top 5 finishes in the B&F, and he is truly a great of the club.

Congratulations Steve, and hopefully there are plenty more games and accolades still to come.

First game I saw May play was Round 2 2019. We lost by 80 points to Geelong, in Geelong, in the pouring rain. May did his groin and wasn't seen again until Round 12.

Fair to say he has come a long way since then. Still not perfect off field, but damn he is a good footballer.

If he had been drafted to a club other than Gold Coast, and had the right attitude from a young age, his career might be spoken about amongst the likes of Rance and Scarlett.

Forget the past, May is a superstar.

Or was it last weekend? Has he played all 7 this year?

Anyway I was stunned when May said he wanted to play for the Dees - players don't do that.  Forever gratefull.  And his interactions with team mates is fun to watch.

Go Maysie.

Steven and Rick have lead the No.1 defence in the AFL for the last four years, long May they reign.

It’s definitely this week coming. As of now he’s played 222 games all up. 123 games for GCS and 99 for us.

If Steven May played full forward and influenced every game the way he does at full back he'd be celebrated as one of the greatest players to ever play.

I always found it interesting that preventing goals isn't applauded anywhere near the degree kicking them is.

Easily the best defender I've seen play for us (started in 1994). He's a freak.

Looked like he was slowing down a bit in 2023 but was then player of the finals for us and is dominating this year with cracked ribs and damage to his vertebrae for most of it. Hope he plays well into his 30s even if we have to rest him often (a la Hibberd last season).

Despite some occasional off-field hiccups, he's also one of my favourites to listen to in the media. Just tells it the way it is with no cliches.

Well done Steven!

Great insight from Jake Lever on last night's on the couch. I love the way the afl Community talk of May and Lever as a unit. They are forever linked.

And BTW. Notice how Buckley commented that Jake left the Crows to join "...a big Victorian  club...".

That's the Dee's I guess. Good one Bucks.

Pert would have loved that. I did.

Makes our backline and those around him stand tall.

Never shirks a contest.

Leaves everything on the park.

Almost always in our top 5 to 10 rated players every week, bar when he's returning from injury or hindered by a niggle.

Premiership immortal.

What more can you say...

it's Steven Stonewall May!

How does the F/S rule works in this sort of situation?

Do players have to choose between the two clubs or the club with most games?

The son can nominate one of the clubs where father played 100+, or none and just enter the draft.

Defenders are so underrated in the AFL

He is a beast. Every winning team needs a bloke that strikes fear into the opposition. Winning mentality. Amazing skills, great mark, does not accept poor performances from his teammates

he has plenty of footy in him

One of my favourite all time Demons

Fantastic recruit by the MFC. Every team wanted him

Would it be fair to say that in footy it is easier to transition from key defender to key forward? For example compared to soccer.

I've seen several cases of defenders made into key forwards, our own TMac one example.

IMO the skill set and physical attributes are transferable between these two key positions.

My icon might indicate otherwise but my favourite MFC player by the length of the straight. The trade to get him was more important to our flag and sustained top end finishes than any other including the Roos appointment or any other list move (yes including our sublime midfield bulls). A super competitor who reads the ball in flight as good as any. So consistent in his performance regardless of the type of opponent he’s on and such a hard, tough ball player which was so not MFC at that time of his selection. Defence wins matches and premierships and he’s 100 games the cornerstone of ours (the best defence in the land across 4 years) Hopefully many more to come.

Another flag or two and I reckon you couldn't keep him out of that conversation.  Best big backman I've seen at the club.

Can you imagine seeing him line up on you at the start of the game?  Terrifying.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
