NGA rule changes costs us Mac Andrew and now possibly Kalani White? What a joke.

I think the bidding should be before the trade period. Not sure how it would work but allowing teams to trade out first and second rounders for 15 junk picks is ludicrous.

I thought Kalani was almost a certainty for us? We definitely need him as a replacement for Max.

He’ll come through F/S. I doubt he’d be a first rounder though.

If the rumoured changes are true, an interesting scenario that will likely arise is when a club is put in a position where their academy or F/S prospect hasn’t been picked by another club at their pick during the round. They then have to make a choice whether to pick the prospect or take a gamble on another player hoping the prospect gets through to the next round.

The end of round picks will become highly sought after as clubs with prospects look to pursue some hedging options in the draft making for some frame before and during draft week.

Well if the rules change, then if his in top 20 we will have zero access to him

Probably best to see what the changes are and what selections we have at the time.

Why is that? Based on the SEN excerpt, it purely sounds like you'd need to match within a certain amount of picks - it doesn't seem like they're restricting access in the same way that they changed the Academy system.

Not matching the pick 5 bid on Mac Andrew allowed us to bring in JVR and Blake Howes; a solid win so far.

K White is 100% nominating the Dees.

Yeah thats my read too, he'd be battline for #1 ruck position by being only a few years behind the newly recruited Ethan Reid. Much better to come down to Melbourne and take the tutelage of the best ruckman of all time in Maximus Aurelius Gawn

The F/S just need to be tightened up not overhauled like the academy system. The F/S just needs an 'anchor' pick from the round they are bidded on. Bundled with other picks to meet the point requirements (if any). It just avoids situations where a club can effectively double dip in the 1st round of a draft without having the round 1 picks.

The academy is simple, even up the playing ground and take away any concessions afforded to interstate clubs - they always complain on social media about the Victoria clubs getting better treatment. Time for them to get the Victorian experience in the draft.

Unless he has onball skills a la Luke Jackson I can't see a ruckman being picked in the first round in the foreseeable future.

I'm envisaging 1.5 years at Casey minimum if not 2.5. First ruck is a very demanding role.

If it suits him and the family I'd even be offering to leave him in Qld for year 1 to develop just that little more. With his Dad as his ruck coach it probably wouldn't do any harm and gives him just that little more time.

The cold winds of Casey can be a lonely place to ply your trade

100%? Great time to join the Gold Coast suns, that’s what I’d be doing

nope; not if he wants to play as a first choice ruckman any time in the next decade plus

ethan read will have that position locked by the time white is ready to roll

far better to come to the dees, learn from all-time great, and play for the side his old man was terrific for for years

I don't know how the father/son rules work.

All I know is that I watch the players sing the song after games with armfuls of kids and there are too many girls for my liking.

Is that knowledge or just an expectation?

If we got Mac Andrew we wouldn't have had JVR.

Says the broken record in the corner..

Well I can tell you, when Jeff talks about Melbourne when he is commentating on the ABC in Queensland, he refers to Melbourne as we.

Yeah I totally agree that Jeff seems to love Melbourne and I think that's genuine. Kalani seems to have enjoyed his time with the Dees too when he trained last year. But purely based on what I see on social media and some comments Jeff has made about his son, they seem very ingrained in the Gold Coast lifestyle and have a strong network in Queensland.

I have no personal connection and could be entirely wrong (hopefully so!), but I think there might be somewhat of a lure to staying on the GC given how ingrained he appears to be.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
