Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Jackson's case is also due to the pathetic protection that clubs have with their high draft picks. I have said it many times, 2 year contracts are laughable for top 10 players.

It should be 3 + 1 (club option).

Yep we were screwed, but Jacko got a medal and I'll be forever grateful to him for his contribution.  I even hope jesse gets some success having overcome huge issues. Not against us though, maybe the Pies.

Below are some of the better KPFs in the game today. Just players who were drafted in the last 6~ years, and the stat is goals kicked in their first four seasons (from debut).

We all want, and need, JVR to be taking a leap this year - but patience is required.

Season # 1 2 3 4
JVR 28
M. King 22 38 52 28
B. King 17 25 47 40
McDonald 9 15 32
Curnow 5 20 34 18
McKay 3 21 26 21
Daniher 3 28 34 43
Naughton 2 32 15 47
Larkey 0 26 14 42
Allen 0 20 18 28
Average 9 25 30 33

For reference, old mate Weideman kicked 3, 3, 10, 11....

Your stats are misleading.

You should have zero in van Rooyen's first year and 28 in his second.

Larkey, Allen, and Naughton all played footy in their first year on a list, while van Rooyen didn't crack a game.

Larkey and Allen played just 2 games, while Naughton played his entire first year as a key defender.

Yep exactly, can’t say it was JVR’s first full year when he’d completed two full pre seasons and those other players are coming off one

I am pretty sure JVR could've played in his first year. However, the footy department made the wise decision to let him develop nicely at the VFL (premiership included).

You are the one dismissing his first year because he was playing VFL footy, I think the way the stats were presented was spot on.

Amusing.

van Rooyen was drafted in 2021.  His first year of football was playing VFL in 2022.  His second year of footy was playing AFL in 2023, ie two years after he was drafted, yet it's counted in column ''1''.

Larkey was drafted in 2016 and played just 2 games in 2017, while Allen was drafted in 2017 and played 2 games in 2018.  Their only 2 games in their respective first years are correctly counted in column ''1'', ie one year after they were drafted, yet van Rooyen's zero games are not.

van Rooyen's second year on a list are matched against Allen's and Larkey's first year on a list.

If you can't see the discrepancy I'm not talented enough to educate you.

Btw, I'm sure others in the stats provided are in the same boat as Allen and Larkey.

comparisons are meaningless, but...

roo's 2023 vs tex walker at same age in 2010:

  • 20 games vs 18
  • 174 vs 213 disposals
  • 28 goal 9 vs 35.28
  • 78.2% vs 59.6% disposal efficiency

roo's 2023 vs joe daniher at the same age in 2014:

  • 20 vs 21
  • 174 vs 274 disposals
  • 28 goal 9 vs 28.20
  • 78.2% vs 65% disposal efficiency

roo's 2023 vs charlie curnow at the same age in 2017:

  • 20 vs 21
  • 174 vs 297 disposals
  • 28 goal 9 vs 20.12
  • 78.2% vs 77.4% disposal efficiency

compares pretty well for mine

He's 194cm, the same height as Charlie Curnow and Taylor Walker...

Charlie Curnow is a brick with sticky hands, can smash a pack,  doesn’t play in the ruck either champ.

Jacob is brittle, all elbows and knees, with Valvoline hands.

You got it wrong. Just admit it.

You said he was too short for KPF which I outlined he's the same height as Curnow.

You're now trying to justify your argument by going completely off track.

Don't think he'll grow any taller. He's 21

What he lacks in height ..not that 194 is short...he makes up with his giant leap. One of the best.

I would prefer to see him play chf with his athleticism and tank.

And despite his leap maybe have someone taller giving Max a chop out. Although Jvrs skills at ground level are pretty good. Time will tell.

I get the feeling that at the moment he's trying too hard. His hands are hitting the ball too fast and so he's not holding as many. Needs to just drop his hands at the last second and cushion the impact a little. Once he starts holding them which is mostly technical then he will be a weapon.

I really think he's got a huge career ahead of him.

And your spot on about loyalty.

He averages 29% hit out to advantage, max averages 11%

Thanks DT.

That's a fascinating stat and I'm quite surprised.

He has to work extra hard in having to leap to overcome the height disadvantage but he's clearly doing what's expected. That said all that leaping probably wears him out somewhat.

I think his ground skills he brings to a ruck duel are top notch.

I guess in an ideal world I'd prefer a bigger second ruck for a number of reasons and also let Jvr at a young age focus on being a forward.

Seriously?

JVR, who only tuned 21 two days ago, is so obviously a gun i'm astounded any footy fan could not see it. Obviously the club do.

And its not just potential.

His first season provides evidence of his ability and a clear sense of his ceiling.

His first year of senior footy matches or exceeds that of every gun forward for the last 30 years, in including the current crop (King brothers, Oscar Allen, JUH, Amiss, Logan McDonald).

I am not saying Jacob van Rooyen will kick 78 goals in a season but mark my words there is one area he is in front is his highly competitive nature. And he is missing marks now that he will take in 1or 2 years time.

Jacob will  be as useful a player for us as Charlie is for Carlton during his career. His rucking role is under estimated and will improve his footy no doubt more he gets trusted. And he can go to defence as well for a cameo or lock down. You have not said much good about JVR but his best  oozes a very high upside once he gains confidence and more form.

You may well be right Binman, it is just my personal opinion. I just don't see the potential that the majority see. I see a player who will be serviceable but not a very good KPF. I will be very happy to be wrong in a couple of years time. I do remember the club and supporters being all gung ho about the Weid and we know how that ended.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
