He has skills. could be a utility. Certainly getting better but not at a fast enough rate

The extension of Laurie's contract is part of the problem with club's list management since 2021. I can't recall an AFL game where Laurie has shown AFL level attributes. He is slow, not highly skilled and should be delisted. Not sure how he got a game this evening.

But that preseason though, trained the house down!!

LOL. Just saw this thread pop up and thought we’d just re-signed Bill for ANOTHER 2 years. 😂

Laurie doesn't have a single part of his game that is AFL standard. The decision to extend his contract was appalling.

Prior to tonight he'd played five games this year and been dropped four times.

If the club is fair dinkum they should delist him and pay out his contract in the next week. To do anything else is just wasting everyone's time.

Can't wait for the second coming of our saviour Robbie Flower - hopefully this time with his 12 apostles rather than empty forward, mid and back lines!

Sadly, he's just not good enough.

He didn't deserve to be dropped after the GWS game, which was arguably his best, and maybe some continuity would have helped, but the rest of his performances didn't warrant ongoing selection.

I've never seen it, and I still don't. The decision to give him the contract extension was baffling given the lack of faith we showed in him.

I really hope the young man is not reading this thread

If you are - keep giving 100%. The same people wrote ANB and many others off at your age

I thought the same. Nibbler was in and out of the side until we were able to find the right role for him and it clicked. Same with Nev Jetta. Let's hope for a similar outcome here.

I hope this kid isn't the new whipping boy. He wasn't as awful as everyone seems to think. He hardly played and has a crack. He didn't set the world in fire but not many of our players did.

I'm not giving up hope, let's get around the kid and see what he can do next season.

Not sure why Laurie is always coping it. Considering he's had the most inconsistent run of games and been sub more often than not I thought he acquitted himself ok for a half. The one main turnover was clearly a misunderstanding with his connection to the leading forward who doubled back towards goal. Pretty sure I saw woeful kicking skills from 22 other players out there tonight who seem to escape the same levels of criticism. While not quick, he's not as slow and outside as people think.

Was hoping he would have kicked on a bit more this year with greater senior opportunies but alas that wasn't forthcoming. But for anyone that watched Casey he was clearly our most consistent and best performed player.

Despite re-signing this year I thought he may be on the trade table considering our reluctance to play him through the year and our decision to play K Brown and McAdam over him for a run of games, two players in lesser form and clearly weren't ready. However given ANB is on the move, he'll most likely stay on the list and provide midfield and high half forward depth. Hardly worth stressing over him filling that role.

Bill had a really good preseason. Fitter, stronger and was bobbing up really smartly as a midfielder in match sim.

Unfortunately he just too slow to do anything defensively at afl level.

And what’s the point of attacking skills/smarts if your team mates never play quickly and get the ball to you in space?

It was a mistake to extend him purely on training efforts rather than wait to see if he could do it at afl level.

Said it before, will say it again - Laurie will not make it. Possesses not one attribute at the highest level to make it

You could probably say the same about Woewodin.

Madness extending his contract just madness for the reasons stated!

Yep, agreed. With ANB gone, this could be a role he is given. He was okay last night, showed more than some. Few quick and slick handballs, extracts and tackles.

Does anyone remember what better players we could've picked instead of Laurie?

Kynan Brown, AMW !!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
