Its a Moo point, the numbers will come out and we will be the best attending club again beside the big 4 Melb clubs (Rich, Coll, Ess & Carlt)

Is  frustrating though!

Yep different year, same dribble.

Our crowds are in line with our member numbers, probably actually batting a bit higher as a percentage.

Sorry to disagree Rab but there were NRL games last weekend in Sydney. You have been listening too much to AFL waffle.

Hi OD. My bad then if there were NRL games being played. I don't usually listen to AFL waffle but maybe I was hoodwinked on this occasion.

You mean the Northern side.
ie MCC, Ponsford  and Northern (Olympic ) Stand.

The Warne Stand was known for being the Southern (or Great Southern) Stand for 80 years plus.

Yes my mistake. Northern side

well it couldn't hardly be based on tickets sold as that would just mostly be the paid membership numbers

Yes but the counting of numbers is still viable with Membership tickets registering at the turnstile. Each person has to click the turnstile and register GO in green before they gain entrance.

Think your theory is not based on the actual entrance to games no matter what style membership or cash based ticket.

Sam Maclure is probably the most hated journalist in Melbourne.

He speaks absolute nonsense and is there just to try create headlines, a bit like a Kane Cornes but even worse.

I actually think the word 'journalist' doesn't actually cover him as a professional, as it is demeaning to the other people doing a great job.

Kane could play footy hard and gave it everything, output was outstanding for limited skills. He has original (and often wacky) thoughts and adds colour. He does a lot for charity with endurance runs etc. On the negative he plays to the SA crowd and does make stuff up that he wishes was true.

Maclure is manure though. Cannot listen to him or care what happens to him.

The one thing I hate about Cornes I noticed yesterday is that where Buckley was trying to be really positive and optimistic about Oliver, Cornes almost dismissed this and was basically saying he is likely to fall again. Thought it was a disgraceful thing to say, basically hoping someone has personal issues again so that you can talk about it.

On the plus side: Cornes is not afraid to "speak truth to power" (although I suspect there are limits to this, eg when it comes to Port, or AFL head office).

On the negative side: he has openly said he admires the US sport commentators, that "big" things up, create controversy, shout into the mike, and generally make a big splash even where a big splash is not needed. For ratings/clicks/whathaveyou. You know the kind: the ones with the aggression, the constant shouting, the controversial predictions. The rightness or wrongness of what they say is secondary to the noise. He sees that you can make a career out of being, essentially, a loudmouth.

I resent him for trying to bring this manufactured outrage to a game that has, for well over a hundred years, stood on its own due to its inherent entertainment value. It doesn't need an extra layer of "mayonnaise" (to put it charitably). Why do we need the Corneses of this world "adding" to the experience with their blather, especially when the only ones who are benefiting are the Corneses?

the problem, mazer, is that there are 2 afl accredited "journalists" for every listed player in the afl.  it's become a bigger business than the sport.

add in the insatiable lust for any garbage whatsoever, of social media, which must be fed 24/7

i blame mark "jako" jackson for trailblazing modern sports journalism (can't blame jack watts this time, but)

I was there. didn't look like a 44k crowd to my eye. One of my kids couldn't go because of a clash with a basketball game but i had downloaded her ticket. how is the crowd number determined. tickets sold or numbers through the turnstiles.

Where do most people sit in Melbourne games at the MCG?  Olympic stand, MCC members, where the cameras aren't facing.  those that were in the Shane Warne stand wound up moving to go into the shade instead of being human barbecue meat. Stupid point, really, if what you're relying your point on is what you saw on TV.

I was there. As I said in my post you responded to if you cared to read it properly.

It didn't look like a 44k to me but as others have responded likely because people took cover between the stands, in bars etc. to avoid the sun.

as a carlton supporter, maclure has a vested interest. he is trying to get blues out of playing at docklands so they can play more games at the g. docklands deal means someone has to play there so need another team to swap with. so media pressure on demons poor attendance is his agenda with the aim of carlton playing more mcg games at the expense of melbourne.

We sit on L2 Southern StNd and avoided the sun up until 3/4 time, normally on a2:30 start we would have been fried. Lol.!!

the people who actually care and understand crwods are in the big foorty forum "2024 AFL attendance". everyone agrred that 44K was a good effort.

Sam McClure and Caroline the hag just like bashing the smaller clubs.

If we can bring 35K people to our home games against the Melbourne clubs and 30K for our home against GWS/Port/West Coast we will have great crowds this year.

Hi Tracca. I've seen every reason / excuse under the sun being used as justification for our crowds not being more reflective of our membership tally. From 7:20pm on a Thursday night until 3:20pm on a Sunday, whether it's too hot, cold or wet to the wrong mode of transport (usually bus) to a lack of technological prowess. Whether it's too early due to kids sports or too late for school the next day. My bingo card is full.

Thats fine but I didnt go and take my 3 kids and wife because of Netball and Basketball commitments.

So make of that what you will. Theres 5 members not attending on a Sunday 1pm game.

I went with my young son, we sat on Level 1 under the Level 2 overhang to get out of the blazing sun, many people did the same. Looked more sparse on tv than attending in person where we sat. Its early afternoon on a 30°C sunny day, people will sit in the shade.

I would have thought Hawthorn is more of a candidate to swap some MCG games out to Marvel. Reality is that Marvel has capacity constraints for the Blues now. Same will happen if Essendon were to be a contender again (may their stagnancy last another decade or two 😁)

The flaw in their logic is that unlike the other three clubs at the MCG, we're not mere tenants, We're the football arm of the MCC, which owns the MCG.  They're not getting rid of us in a hurry.

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
