Wasn't McEvoy a top ten pick?

McEvoy was picl 9 but Cox was a rookie (wow).  Toby is an interesting one, passed over in his draft year but went pick 35 the year after to the the Sydney Sods.....

I’ll stand corrected on McEvoy but certainly a bit of a wasted pick for the Saints, traded him off for a pick in the teens and Shane Savage.

However I think it backs up my point, and whilst drafting in hindsight is easy Saints could have taken Mumford who went as a rookie and any of the players left on the table in place of McEvoy, namely

Dangerfield, Cyril Rioli, Robbie Tarrant, Alex Rance, Easton Wood, Scott Thompson (would have been handy in the 09/10 backline), Callan Ward or Cale Hooker

West Coast Eagles will get him

Think you're right assuming they can show him a decent plan to improve the team across the board. He'll get $$ but what the West also offers is the outside dollars. Radio, newspaper and sponsorship opps adding another $200k plus a year.

Bulldogs also have to deal with the JUH contract renewal saga

We are in desperate need of a ruckman that can take over from Max but our first major operation needs to be a key forward. BBB and TMac are in their twilights. Petty looks certain to head back to Adelaide at season's end if the 2023 trade week whispers are true and the jury is out on Jefferson. JVR can't do it alone and if he gets a whiff of home sickness in the coming years we are toast.

The window is slowly shutting if we can't replenish our forward and ruck stocks.

Max ain’t going anywhere for 3-4yrs yet — we need to lure someone once he’s nearing end, can’t happen sooner for obv reasons

Nothing to do with your argument,  but I have vague recollections of the Saints hoping McEvoy would become a forward.

Very generous to say Pruess has done well. 10 games in 3 years - all in 2022. When he's not injured, he's suspended.

He did do his shoulder in 2021 and back in 2023.

Interesting stat for 2022 is that his average hit outs was 32.6 compared to Gawn’s 27.0…

Free agents ?  Only Sydney’s Ollie Florent is realistically any target in my view.  Others are too expensive, too old , not good enough , not a good fit or not required.  Florent has skills and pace.  Offer him a 4 year deal and press the Swans into serious coin to keep him.

100% agree!

Was just referencing Gawn as I think he is the best ruck, a known player to us, and also Preuss moved from Melbourne to GWS so a relevant comparison to my previous point about GWS’ ruck coaching and recruiting.

What’s your source? Would love to dig into this further and look at intercept marks and tackles as well

What’s really interesting from this stats  is Grundy’s rankings too.

@WheeloRatings do you have some 2023 ruck stats?

They would have asked the question but I don't think they would have had the cap space in 2022, a few players on big money not playing much.

Clearing out NicNat, Shuey, Hurn add on what you expect lower contracts for Yeo, McGovern and Kelly when they renegotiate, Gaff is cooked most likely last contract and all of the sudden they have some coin to spend going forward.

To me he is either staying in the West or moving further West.

Just going to drop in that JVR is tracking better than JUH so far.

Personally I think it is amazing for Van Rooyen to have done so well while taking opposition first defenders most of the time, compared to JUH who had the marking target support of Naughton, Lobb and English.

Jamarra's no slouch, but Van Rooyen is an effective primary marking target at 20yrs and that takes some doing!

They would partner up very well, too. ;)

So get out the abacuses, slide rules, Casio desk calculators, power up the IBM mainframe and call in the statistical analyst think tank.

Q. To ‘objectively’ decide what?

A. Max Gawn as a ruck man ‘qualitatively’ has the greatest influence on team success of any of the ruck men in the land.

Max ain’t going anywhere for 3-4yrs yet — we need to lure someone once he’s nearing end, can’t happen sooner for obv reasons

Max is one serious injury away from leaving us with a massive gap. He won’t get 4 more years. People forget about the injuries he had in the early part of his career and the knee injury last year. Add the fact he gets clobbered every week with little protection from umpires…he is a warrior and one of the all time greats, but it’s unrealistic to think he will be a top line ruck for another 4 seasons

All these stats are well and good, but the one that counts most for me is the centre clearance rate from about the 27minute mark of the third quarter, till the 5 miniute mark of the last in the 2021 GF.

When I saw the threat title, I though @Bigfoot was suggesting the great Jack Viney was working his way through the LinkedIn Learning Elocution and Vocabulary Course.

That's a bit harsh ... but I know what you mean.

I prefer it when Jack let's his footy and physical pressure around the footy do the talking.

Thanks so much Wheelo, this is really interesting!!

I’m a bit unsure how I feel about Gawn’s average tackles. On the one hand it’s pressure and potential turnover, but on the other it could be an injury or suspension risk! (Particularly with how big some of these guys are).

We need a backup ruckman who can play 15 games a year and allow max to only play 7 or 8 after this year, letting him rest but be fresh when he does play. Like brisbane did with their ruckman in their treble.

Is that person english? Na he'd want to be number 1 and fair enough too.

The 2023 figures are helpful.

What they tell us is that Maxie only had a so so year in 2023. He was not in the top 5 of most of the figures. He didn’t make the AA team and it caused some dysfunction with Brodie playing at the same time.

In 2024 he is set up with backing from JVR Schache and Fullarton when he is fit. Oh and any other trainee ruck that surprises in form.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
