Hoping for a successful surgery and rehab and looking forward to seeing him out there in the preseason. Begs the question.... Why wasn't this done straight away. An achilles rupture which requires surgery is a 12 month rehab. Not saying this is what it is but it will still be significant time on sidelines! 1 Quote

And it won’t be a quick recovery I’ll bet. Poor guy. Wait for the “totally stuffed up by our totally incompetent medical, rehab, fitness, administration, CEOs and Presidents past and present, boot studder etc staff. And of course the door man and cleaners can’t be exempt”. Or, maybe, it started to come good under expert medical and fitness supervision, he tried it out, didn’t work, more rest then try again, still not right. And maybe surgery for a non ruptured Achilles is only a last resort after conservative measures fail, says the specialist involved. Is his specialist perhaps an occult poster here? The “mismanagement” path may appeal more to those who are that way inclined. 7 1 Quote

Roost it far 10,100 Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 I believe Charlie Spargo wanted to try all other options and didn't want surgery......It's his last resort and he went under the knife yesterday. A ripping kid by all reports, also one of our best kicks so I'm personally looking forward to having him back in action. 8 1 Quote

The timing of it all is unfortunate, i know a player may want to push surgery back etc. If the decision was made sooner might have been able to have another pick in the mid-season draft 1 Quote

jnrmac 20,360 Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 Spargo seemed to be in good nick early pre season, got injured, played no practice matches and was selected for the Rd 0 game against Sydney. Hasn't been seen since. Achilles injuries are problematic due to the lack of blood flow in the region so often they will try to inject the area with aerated blood to encourage repair. Maybe they have exhausted those options and now have no other options but surgery. I think its legitimate to question the Spargo selection for Rd 0. It was queried at the time but the longer this goes on the more it looks dubious. 1 1 Quote
spirit of norm smith 16,679 Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 I think if he can recover and look to 2025, Spargo should be looked at as a midfielder option for next year. We have plenty of small forwards. I’d try him as a rotating midfielder. That was where he played as a junior. With an absence of midfield depth, he might focus on building himself into a genuine rover type. 1 Quote

We'd most likely be top 4 with those players in the side. add to that Brown who can never get on the park and Spargo's ankle we've been 4 players down all season. While it gives opportunities to our younger players like Howes, AMW and Turner we're doing incredibly well to be in the hunt for finals with no Gawn, Pettracca and a NQR Oliver. 1 1 Quote

Smith and Brayshaw wouldn't stop a 100 point loss to Freo and losing to West Coast. Our injury list this year has been very good. Injuries like Petracca's and Gawn's are unavoidable, they aren't soft tissue that you could blame on conditioning or overtraining. Injuries aren't to blame for our performance, nor should we be complaining about our injury list. We've been fortunate, we just haven't had the form, intent or depth of talent to compete for a top 4 spot. 3 1 Quote

He didn't say we'd have won every game nor never lose by more than 20 points. But surely being 2 good players, one structurally important) out of the list all year is going to hurt. No team wants to go into a season with such a truncated list. (Of course, it might not hurt if by some miracle we didn't have any injuries that naturally occur from time to time, but as you said, they are unavoidable and we did have them). 2 Quote

Had we won those we would currently be in second spot. Yes Eagles game and Freo were shockers but we have still been competitive. 4 Quote

Our injury issues have been quality rather than quantity, and we’ve been able to plug holes. Whether we can plug the ruck hole will be answered tonight and next week. 2 Quote
