absolutely correct for they only show the "good" highlights that may represent 3 minutes of game time and not the mistakes one makes.

A lot of clubs looked at Simon Black and the negative was he lacked acceleration, was average pace, kicking was okay and wasn’t a great contested mark. Spoke to a few people who that one wrangles with because in their words they got caught up in what he couldn’t do and overlooked what he could do and in hindsight they actually said what he did well, he did exceptionally well and they kind of knew that at the time. Sometimes it’s like a coach trying to play players in different positions when you are better off getting them to stick at what they do best

That makes the draft about “6/8 short” in the first round if the experts are any guide!!

You can only select from the players available any way.

You can but sometimes timing is everything and we finished low down in 2003 had 2 top 5 picks in what wasn’t a great draft. 2004 we finish in the 8 when finishing with 2 picks in the top 5 at 3 and gets you Ryan Griffin and Buddy. We potentially win 06 with those two, although Brock McLean was very important in our 06 finals. Such is the fickle nature of the draft but I think we do it much better now

13. Caleb Windsor

Melbourne

Eastern Ranges, 184cm Midfielder
The mail is that Melbourne is just about set on selecting Windsor with its second selection here. The Eastern Ranges product is another player to have shot up draft boards in the second half of the season, even more so after a strong showing at the national draft combine. The wingman had a big under-18 national championships with Vic Metro and is seen as a player with real weapons with his speed, foot skills and decision making. He is a modern-day wingman who most clubs would love to have.

13.2 and 19.4, the two numbers that might matter most with Windsor.

Uncontested possessions to disposals.

Isn’t there a 30% contested to uncontested ratio that players who don’t meet routinely flop? He’s over that, but not by much.

The other question I have is why was he only a wingman at Coates league level in every clip I’ve seen? He’s not that skinny, why wasn’t he used on ball?

Agree reckon he will be a mid with us Terrific run and carry and long left foot kick. Made for us just at the right time.

Ouch you are looking at an outside runner here that we need. Our half backs should be more attacking. Can’t see why not. Judd Riv and Bowser and Salo can all get on their bike. Let’s see them do that.

Sorry @58er but Caleb Windsor is definitely a right footer. Plays like Max Holmes.  Pace. Skills.  Loves a goal. And can chase down tackle which gives him that added bonus as a running mid.

Love Max Holmes. Nash the teeth every time I see him and think we were about to pick him instead of Laurie and then Cats did a last minute trade to get the pick before us and get him. Stuffed the whole strategy of swapping our future 1st rounder to get the pick. Would be a relief for my teeth if we get someone as good or better

I do like Windsor for our pick 11; but I'd be a little concerned if we couldn't get Curtin at #6 and might end up with Sanders and Windsor as our 2 picks.  How far away are D. Turner and Jefferson from breaking in the side, cause we do have future KPP issues with May, Petty, BBB, and McDonald.

Do we need to bolster our tall stocks more importantly than taking best available that might be 2 midfields?

There’s been some talk that we could be interested in James Leake at pick 6

Not a key position player by any stretch but has shown a lot of versatility playing as an intercept defender at half back, as well as a forward and midfielder (sometimes in the same game)

Could alleviate the concern that we’d be taking two pure midfielders

Thanks SONS but in his highlights he kicked both feet and left looked so good. Font tell me we could pick up a genuine wrong footer so good on both feet?

Wow let the draft begin!

Really like to see Dees bring in Caleb Windsor.  Definitely his pace would be a huge plus.

I think Dees want Sanders/Leake and Wilson/Windsor.  Any 2 of these players would add to the next midfield phase coming through.
Of course either Curtin and OSullivan also more than welcome to be in red and blue.

Maybe, as Cal T. has been calling Windsor the "bolter", not Leake.

I remember when Blake Howes was considered a sure thing to be taken by us at pick 19, only to be taken almost 20 picks later

I forgot about that, I was happy to get him in with that next pick, at the time.

I don't think that rule matters if you have Petracca, Oliver & Viney to get it to them

It still matters. Being good at the contest has been a hallmark of the JT years and it’s vital in finals. Wingers have clutch contests at times too, when 50:50 balls spill in to space.

Obviously Windsor has some work to on that side of his game and I hardly expect him to be Jack Viney, but he probably does meet the benchmark and he has a frame to add some muscle in time as well.

Hunter and Langdon both went at 32% contested possessions per disposal in 2023.

Josh Daicos, who won a B&F in a premiership year, went at 30%.

Windsor went at 32% this year.

I haven't seen enough of Windsor to have an informed view, but if he uses it well and breaks the lines with speed I don't see an issue based on his recent numbers.

Agreed. I think the game has changed a bit again, to enable uncontested players to play a bigger role.

My concern on that sort of player is that the game will invariably shift again to a greater need to win contests.

That said, if JT and co pick him early, then I'll trust them.

That's why the Tholstrup pick makes a whole lot more sense.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
