It's disappointing all this. Petty was to be our key pillar for the next ten years. He's won a flag with us, we drafted him in the second round and have developed him very well. I guess Adelaide could say a similar thing of Lever, but this is a problem for us list management nevertheless.

I hope we can change his mind and get him a KPF partner for 2025.

So looking at it from his POV - it was a frustrating season where he played back and then forward and then back and the forward, got injured, had a dispiriting finish to the season, and then had one of the biggest clubs in the country flash their eyes at him - we need to figure out what we are doing because I tell you what - I have no idea. And being a tall forward at Melbourne is not a pleasant thought in its own right the way we ‘move’ the ball.

I think we can keep him but he has to be starting out of the square with JVR and Tomlinson needs to be trusted more than he is and MC need to back in a horse, otherwise… they might bolt…

We rate him at either end of the ground, so he fills holes for us, but by the second half of the season, it was pretty clear we wanted him to play as our key forward.

That's no doubt what Goody has talked about. Now, providing we don't have a lot fo injuries at the defensive end next season, Petty will play forward all year. That seems obvious to me.

I don't think I've come across any other professional sport where so many players are homesick for places that are an hour or so away by air or a few hours by road with exactly the same culture, food and language.

I wouldn't worry guys.  If he has a stellar 2024 (emphasis on IF and touching wood, throwing salt over shoulder etc) then he may get an extension offer he can't refuse.

It's actually extraordinary.

Fancy being in a rush to get back to Adelaide.

Seriously Clubs are going to go broke or at best be seriously compromised if they going to offer a player 800k on a long term contract that has a serious foot injury. Petty is a good player with further potential, injuries aside, but he is not a champion. The deals being offered around the traps are high risk plays. And can end up belly up.

Hemingway I don't think Adelaide thought we would agree to trade Petty but in asking for him in exchange for McAdams and outlining they are prepared to offer him a long term contract on big $ opens up the conversation for a trade next year or free agency in 2025.  They can now watch his 2024 campaign closely and see how he looks at the end of next year.

I’m always hearing on here that footballers (round ball) are all soft AF but try telling that to a Nigerian that’s plying his trade in Vladivostok or a Colombian playing in Helsinki. I wonder if these guys that run down their contracts because they miss their mum are the same ones you see on docos that are still being breastfed when they’re in primary school.

Lots of water to pass under the bridge on this one. Sydney convinced Papley to stay when it looked like he was on the way to Carlton.

Hope so @Rab D Nesbitt The powers that be must have taken notice of the emails fellow Demons sent to the club.

I dunno.
I moved away from home when I was 18.
Spent a few years home sick at different points till my visits back to Melbourne to see family and friends got less and less.
Now I can't stand the joint.
Reckon getting homesick as a young fella is pretty natural.
It passes for some, but for others it's stronger.
And I was raised by my old man from the age of 5 😁

  • Demonland changed the title to The Harrison Petty Thread

Please Kane just stop talking

Imagine a sliding doors scenario:

1. We hold onto him for two years. He kicks 50-60 goals both years and we win back to back flags. He leaves after 2025 and we get a bit less than this year.

2. We trade him for those picks. We get some decent developing kids and finish top 4 the next two years but can't quite get the job done.

Your aim in football is to win premierships, not get the most draft picks for your contracted players.

If Petty stays fit and plays fwd all year with JVR and Fritsch we are a serious chance at a flag.

but yeah we should trade him.

Fullerton and JVR will not win us a flag

and yes i’m unfortunately assuming t Mac and Brown are too injury riddled to play 20 games plus

Riley Beveridge countered Cornes with

"Do you think Melbourne cares about a few places in the draft order if he manages to snag them a premiership in the next couple of years?"  He also indicated that Melb were arguably one of the better performing teams over the finals period (A bit of a stretch perhaps) but that if Petty was there instead of TMac, then could they have rolled the Pies in the QF.

... Cornes didn't really like that argument I thought.

But the most important take from this is that I need to stop listening to AFL Trade Radio, it's not good for your health!

totally normal to miss your home but for professional athletes in their 20’s earning big money that can visit home multiple times per year for free it’s truely bizarre that some AFL players dictate their career path based on missing home

What if they can earn bigger money closer to home?
Or away from the rat race of Melbourne.

if a player makes a decision based on more money it’s not a go home factor issue and that’s fine.

If they make a career defining decision due to a city being busy with traffic or too hectic well that’s pretty astounding.

If i got paid big money to live away with a new ‘family’ of 45 mates to play footy i’d think i’m the luckiest bloke in the world.

My fav thing about Kane is how much energy he put into the Petty discourse this week, to then say he is the 2nd most overhyped player of the trade period etc. Just calma Kane lol

Continuing my story from above.
My old man was [censored] off when I shot through.
"There's no jobs up there, yadda, yadda, yadda."
"You want your whole life to be a holiday.", to which I thought .... "What's wrong with that."
I was at the stage of contemplating going back to Melbourne there for abit.
I knocked off work.
Went to the pub, got a couple of Beam cans and was on the Murray river with a fishing rod in the water watching the cockies fly by within' 10 mins.
There was no way I could do that in Melbourne and made my decision there and then to stay.
Never looked back from that moment.
10years later the old man comes to visit.
I loaded him in the car, launched the boat 200m from my house and took him for a burn up the river.
He looked around and declared, "Geez, ya got it made."
One of my proudest moments TBH.

Not everything is about money man.
Though I was doing ok in that dept as well.

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
