Don’t think it will be taken into account but Maynard’s behaviour immediately after the incident didn’t look like that of someone who was sorry for what happened which is what you would expect of somebody who did something by accident, instead he got defensive which is typical of somebody who is guilty.

 

Hopefully Gus is alright, but if not I’d expect some very nervous people at AFL house, the way they handle this will have ramifications for how this goes legally down the track I suspect. If they condone what happened as a football act then they are effectively saying it’s Brayshaws  responsibility to protect himself in that situation. I’d find it hard to believe there is a court out there that would agree with that sentiment.

    He also head-butted Viney which conveniently the media has forgotten about.

    Seems awfully desperate to make amends which to me seems like he’s feeling guilty more than anything. If it was a complete accident, I’m not sure he’d go to these lengths. Also, who doesn’t call ahead?

    Sam Edmund reporting that on the evening that Maynard went over to Gus’s house with his flowers, wine and chocolates, there was a group of MFC players already there.

    The atmosphere was super awkward and one MFC player was so inflamed by the situation that he had to excuse himself from the house. I wonder which player that was?

    Edit - At the Break of Dawn just beat me with the story in the above post.

    And roaring and cheering Maynard in support, to drown out the Melbourne boos, every time he ran to or from the interchange throughout the rest of the game.

    Put money it was Steven May or Jack Viney.

    It’s the appeal that will be interesting 

    My guess is that he will get 3 weeks and they’ll appeal.

    I hope like all of us Gus is well enough to attend on Friday night. Then I hope we catch a glimpse of him on the big screen and give him an almighty cheer.

    I just don’t know, only trying to think of something positive to say cause the aftermath like most, has left me sick in the guts.

    I’m normally ‘live and let live’ as far as oppo supporters go, but the Pies supporters were a new kind of feral last Thursday. Even a Pies supporting mate of mine who called to gloat the following day (never calls when we beat them) said he thought they were as foul as he’d seen them😂

    Once he launched he had a duty of care to Brayshaw. Commentators are saying Maynard had a duty of care to protect himself so he had to brace etc. Total [censored]. Duty of care to the other player is never removed.

    He has to wear the consequences of his decision.

    Yes, its legal to smother a ball but it is not legal to launch at a player and hit his head.

    Magpies will argue Brayshaw strayed into his path after he kicked it and showed footage.

    Siad on 'On the Couch' Brayshaw will not likely play again this year'.

    Have to be careful what is said but it does cross the mind whether a player has seen an opportunity to take another player out and ....... That can never be proven though.

    Nothing can take away the duty of care.
    The AFL may argue that there was distinct actions.

    First an action to smother which was never going to succeed.

    Second was the brace and launch.

    The AFL will argue contact was inevitable from the millisecond he launched.

    Yeah, that's a suspension offence on it's own normally, but, hey, we're basically watching a performance art version of 'ex-cop, with mates at the local station, getting accused of domestic violence'.

    I shed more than a few tears looking at that image, and thinking of his parents and Danielle and her mum listening to those Collingwood inbred cheer while Gus was motionless on the ground, and rushing down to the rooms to see how he is doing.

    I think it's little wonder why so many of us are feeling so flat about Thursday. A loss is a loss, we've all seen plenty of them and plenty worse, but this incident, and the frankly pathetic follow up in the media and online since, has really just left a horrible bitter taste in our mouths. 

    If our season ends on Friday, I'll be upset, but if Gus is ok then that is truly what matters. Bigger picture. 

    Me too.

    I've been really flat since the game. I thought at first it was because we lost. But I actually think it was this incident and the response of the Collingwood crowd that left me feeling this way.

    Was impressed with Lyon tonight.  I thought he articulated the case for the prosecution well.  Buckley and to a lesser extent Brown still came across as stuck in the past.  It's obviously hard for Lyon - very close to both the Frawley family and the Brayshaw's. Managed to keep his emotions in check.

    If Lachie Hunter (who had effectively stopped moving and trapped the ball) has a duty of care to Rozee that extends beyond stopping all momentum, then Maynard has a duty of care to Brayshaw when attempting to touch the ball too.

    That's because Lyon to this day still struggles with the passing of his close mate in Danny Frawley.

    Spuds death hit him harder then the Jim Stynes purely because he knew eventually Jim was going to go. This one blind sided him

    Caro mentioned it was Gawn and Petracca at Brayshaws house when Maynard turned up.

    Well, Jack has his hand around Maynard's throat in response, so I'm not sure we want to be dredging that headbutt moment up too much.

On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

      The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
