I agree to an extent Macca, the one difference being that in the Daicos example it was a marking contest and so the ball was in dispute. This is often true for bumps gone wrong but the AFL has been clear for years that if you elect to bump you wear the consequences. Marking contests are different because both players are contesting the ball.

In this instance the ball was not in dispute, Brayshaw had clear possession and Maynard owed a duty of care - he can attempt to smother desperately, tackle, bump etc but once he elects to do so he must do it in a manner that is not reckless or careless as he has a duty of care to his opponent who was unable to protect himself. Recklessly jumping in the air to smother is fine, unless you happen to bowl over and concuss your opponent. Then you're in trouble.

In the Daicos incident the Hawthorn player never had eyes for the ball and had his back to the play ... it was a charge but I believe that he wasn't cited because there was no connection to the head

Nevertheless, there was damage caused and I believe the ribs were targeted.  Should have been cited for unduly rough play and out for 2 or 3 weeks

I  was really surprised that more wasn't made of it.  Right now, of course there's not going to be any sympathy here and elsewhere because of the Maynard incident but if that Hawthorn player had have been cited, there may not be any furore about Maynard being cited

Ok thanks

May before he had played a game for us, was suspended in a Practice match, where he stopped and a player ran into him front on, without any shoulder bracing impact to the head.

Didn't hear any complaints from the media peanut gallery then.

If May did the same smother act on Daicos, there would be calls for a year ban, from the same media peanut gallery.

I can see it now " May, a tough player, took out a great ball player and should be suspended for as long as possible".

The talk from some posters here about May or Viney “taking out” Maynard if we’re in the fortunate position of playing the Pies again is very misguided and I simply can’t stand by it.

It should be Hibbo.

ITS A FOOTBALL ACT

Just make sure we jump before impact... thats important, cos it means you aren't responsible for where you land....

Him and his beloved Port can get f****

Btw , Port just like Maynard have no duty of care when it comes to concussion.

Hard show to watch show but Footy classified with Kane and Wilson might be worth a look tonight.

I dunno mate, we'd be lambs to the slaughter surely!

Wilson has gone very strongly one way and Kane is just Kane. Maynard is a thug but I'm more angry at the press over this issue at the moment.

Strange but when he retired yesterday thats the first thing I thought about.

Caro came out really hard on Maynard and the AFL on offsiders.

Said Michael Chirtians position as mRO chairperson is no longer tenable after he initially refused to even cite Maynard for the shoulder into Gus's head.

Evidently Laura Kane stepped in and told him he had to.

I'd think Caro would strongly argue the case for Maynard going to Bali early.

Anyway, none of it probably matters.

I reckon we've lost a champion player and it's incredibly sad for him, his family and our club.

I hope the players move on from sadness to full on fire breathing anger this week.

Sorry I didn't know about the Wilson side, been completely blacked out from media in the last day or so. Could make for some good tv.

No, Pickett's attempt at a smother was a pure football action. Almost identical, but amazingly didnt attempt to knock  Hoskin-Elliott into next week.
Maynard shuffled before he jumped, and changed his angle at the last minute to line up Brayshaw. He had intent to make contact with the player.

How many of these 'pure football actions' have you seen in the last 5-10 years where people attempt to smother the ball, and knock out the player kicking it?

I see I have no support on this thread so I shall desist. I hope that the Tribunal sees the footage from all angles. As a retired lawyer, I think that must absolve Maynard from any penalty. But, as has been pointed out by deep thinkers on this thread, the Tribunal's decision may be political - not fair to player Maynard but politically correct.

Good point.  I thik youv'e discovered a link/pattern here for Kane.

Is that Port doctor still employed in the AFL I wonder?

Watch Offsiders in IView from yesterday. Caro, kellie and even Roy Masters nail the issues.

We are all passionate Dees supporters here so we all feel really sorry about the consequences for Gus.

Because I recognise and share that passion, I take no umbrage at the cheap shots levelled at me after I announced I was leaving this thread.

Anyone with a modicum of legal training will see how this is will play out.

If the Tribunal makes a Rules-based decision based on the real time (not slow-motion) footage, player Maynard will be exonerated.

If the Tribunal makes a political decision (entirely possible), Player Maynard will be exonerated on Appeal.

Seriously!!!     IF that is true, it confirms Christians ineptitude and or incompetence and or bias and he should go immediately.

I did say when the incident happened that Christian would be compromised and may well let it go.

And so has Mick Malthouse. Said he had other options.

Just heard Malthouse's comment.

He is spot on...thanks goodness some in the AFL community are prepared to break ranks and call it for what it is.

Also just watched a replay of the Offsiders and they were all of the view that Maynard should go.

As Roy said, he couldn't see why anyone could argue the fact.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
