Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

We are all passionate Dees supporters here so we all feel really sorry about the consequences for Gus.

Because I recognise and share that passion, I take no umbrage at the cheap shots levelled at me after I announced I was leaving this thread.

Anyone with a modicum of legal training will see how this is will play out.

If the Tribunal makes a Rules-based decision based on the real time (not slow-motion) footage, player Maynard will be exonerated.

If the Tribunal makes a political decision (entirely possible), Player Maynard will be exonerated on Appeal.

Hate the way you use your faux-legal phrasing (like 'Player Maynard') to give the (wrong) impression that you know what you're talking about. You may be an ex-lawyer, but you're not in court now - you don't have a responsibility to be either on the side of or against a defendant. You're on a Demons' football fans website - you're acting like you've been appointed head of Maynard's defence.

This could have serious consequences for our club. I'm sure the AFL monitors fans' reaction to events like this. Seeing such one-sided commentary on the main Demons' website could encourage them to give in to the Collingwood machine.

Best you take your little peruke and disappear.

I have a modicum of legal training and I admire your tenacity and am annoyed at criticisms directed at you,  but I disagree when you look into the AFL process and analysis.

So I guess its the old 2 lawyers and 2 opinions scenario.

There's no fool like an old fool

These dinosaurs in the media and ex players have obviously learnt nothing from the violent days of the 70's, 80's & 90's

Perhaps they want those days back

I hope non of them are suffering CTE from their playing days. But going by the rubbish they constantly spit from their mouth, it’s very possible they are.

Let’s be clear on this.

You chose to cite both your experience in Australian Rules football and your legal background as some kind of muscle-flex, then added further that people who were in favour of Maynard getting suspended made you feel “ashamed”. You refer to people here taking “cheap shots” at you, but no shots came cheaper than this comment

First of all, citing such experience (in vague terms) on an internet forum is not only weak currency, but it makes the supposition that nobody else here has the necessary insight to assess the situation. It’s as arrogant as it is dumb.

Further to this, your argument as an “ex-player” seemed to be “Back in my day people got concussed and didn’t sook about it”.

You seem completely oblivious to the fact that this mindset is a relic. You probably have a t-shirt that says “Real Men Don’t Eat Quiche”.

Yes, there was a lot more “biffo” when you played for (insert irrelevant amateur club name here). Did it make the game better? Hardly. You’re suggesting a time when a bunch of semi-fit blokes with second jobs who could only kick a ball with their preferred foot is to be revered as the pinnacle of the game

Basically, if you’re going to pull out your résumé as a reason why we’re making you feel “ashamed”, you’d want to back it up with a solid argument. But instead you’ve come across as half Mark Jackson, half Lionel Hutz.

Question to Coach of Collingwood. Was Maynard stationed in the position he was by the Coll Coach, so as to stop quick releases from the centre bounces? What the hell happened to that part of that instruction that Maynard didn't get?

Or what instruction was Maynard given, and will this happen again, given a propensity to being  misunderstood?

Come on Media grow some bulls, or is this like the other major issues that "you cannot handle the truth"

There is still a quite pronounced bloodlust amongst football fans, the media & the ex  players

Explains the lack of sympathy & empathy for Gus.  His health should be the talking point but it's a secondary issue.  A long way second

Kornes bangs on about needing to have played the sport but all that shows up is his own arrogance

But it's interesting to note how the oldies view the incident (dinosaurs are another category, more a way of thinking)

Most of the oldies remember the violent days and how players would constantly disguise their violent actions (and then plead their innocence)

You are like the tide Rollo - you keep saying you are leaving this thread, but you keep coming back.

For what it is worth, your position has been made abundantly clear, so no need to repeat again.

And for what it is worth, your opinion on this topic, even given your legal background, is not shared by 99.99% of Demonland. Please accept that.

And please don't respond to my post, it will simply be "returned to sender".

This from Sen...

Nathan Buckley does not believe that Brayden Maynard could have done anything else in his power to avoid contact with Angus Brayshaw last Thursday ".

This is why he needs to be punished. It was a ludicrous and careless position to put Gus in. It was a deliberate decision that only had one outcome. He knew the contact with Gus would come and worsened by Maybard tucking in. Maybe he could have elected not to go full tilt at the bloke playing the game in the first instance.

Lets say they are the right and there is nothing he could have done to avoid contact.

So what?

That's is not the issue, the issue is he decided to turn and bump.

He had other options to protect himself (and Gus) from being hurt - for example putting his hands out and pushing gus in the chest with them.

But he decided to turn and bump. If he had time to do that he had time for other options.

Whether contact was inevitable or not is neither here nor there. It is a complete furphy as is the whole football act palaver.

Once Koz left the ground to bump Smith, contact was inevitable but that didn't mean he got off when he chose to bump and got Smith in the head.

The rules are clear - elect to bump and if you hit a player in the head you're gone.

Concussion and CTE is the only subject where I don't feel that I have to seek a former player's opinion. It means something yes, but they aren't Robinson Crusoe on this matter.

May before he had played a game for us, was suspended in a Practice match, where he stopped and a player ran into him front on, without any shoulder bracing impact to the head.

Didn't hear any complaints from the media peanut gallery then.

If May did the same smother act on Daicos, there would be calls for a year ban, from the same media peanut gallery.

I can see it now " May, a tough player, took out a great ball player and should be suspended for as long as possible".

Exactly: I'm glad you brought this up. The only difference was May stood still, whereas Maynard thrust his shoulders directly at Brayshwaw's head.

Just heard Malthouse's comment.

He is spot on...thanks goodness some in the AFL community are prepared to break ranks and call it for what it is.

Also just watched a replay of the Offsiders and they were all of the view that Maynard should go.

As Roy said, he couldn't see why anyone could argue the fact.

I think the media are legit scared about the personal backlash they'll receive if they go against Collingwood supporters. Seriously.

Who's one guy that could speak his mind and not get ravaged? A bloke who won them one of their two premierships in the last multiple decades.

Don't forget you and i are not getting all the filming of this major incident that should be available to the public and thus the presumptions are so frustrating. We would actually see the mindset in action, or not.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
