JJ replacement for Brayshaw is obvious. Tomlinson replaces Hibberd and takes the testing ruck….solid. Turner…..not sure what his gig is!

Forward?

He's been training with the forwards and slots in for JVR.

Our very own Dermie.

i’ve yet to hear anyone state a decent case for bringing Grundy in

1 .  Max has a broken toe, who knows what happens if stepped on in 1st Qrt

  2.  Carlton have a decent 2x Ruck combo anyway

  3.  Carlton play tall

  4.  Other Fwd options are a lottery BBB (fit?) or Schache (skills?)

  5.  Releases Smith to sub who's strength is 1.5 Qrts pinch hitting as a fit/fast Sub (3rd back or 3rd fwd)

I don't understand why our opponents seem to dominate centre clearances, especially at the start of matches.

And particularly as our midfield personnel are so highly rated.

Looks like Jack Silvagni won’t be playing.

Should be a stewards enquiry if this.

It wasn't really our defence that was good against Collingwood. We conceded a score of 60 (arguably more if Elliot kicked normally) off 39 inside 50s. Both of McStay goals were when he was matched up on Rivers, and Rivers was also seemingly on Cameron when he kicked his goal. We were definitely short down back and it detracted from Levers intercept and Rivers rebounding. Both are important to our fortunes and rivers in particular has become important to how we go forward.

The score conceded of 60 had more to do with the fact we basically had the ball for the entire last quarter, so they barely scored.

If tommo comes in, it's to play on the resting ruck, as May will be on Curnow. Lever will then take a small/midsized which allows him to play his intercepting role (and also get burnt the other way as he is prone to do).

I'm not fussed on Chandler or Spargo - take your pick. Either one could light up, either one could have 3 touches again.

Jordon is the last man standing for Gus.

Tmac and Smith can be the big forwards, with Fritsch the 3rd. That's arguably big enough down there without the need for Grundy or Gawn. I'd like to be able to swing Trac down there too, but then we'd ideally have another mid floating around somewhere. Maybe rivers is that name with Turner taking his spot at half back via sub.

On the basis of the above, Grundy doesn't play.

Am I wrong?

It’s as if our supporter base has no understanding of football. Who plays ruck when Gawn is off????

aside from the 20% resting ruck duties what does he offer? zero fwd

Tommo in for JVR. Smith fwd

again… who do you suggest plays ruck for 20% of the match?

Mostly agree with this, Jordon has taken a step back this year as a player.

Curious though as to who replaces the vital midfield minutes that Brayshaw would have provided?

hopefully not Jordon

He is a momentum killer with average  skills in my view. Takes too long to execute He would make our system worse

JVR has been doing this as a first year kid. T Mac has done it and can again

You do realise that tmac has lost all ability to jump in the air? A little. Problematic when trying to get the ball in the centre bounce

Might want to check yourself. A lot of teams play randoms as 2nd ruck. There have been premierships won with midfielders playing 2nd ruck.

Literally anyone tall can play ruck for 20% of the game. None of them will be very good at it, but it's unlikely to be the difference in the game.

I don't like the team with Grundy in it, but I don't mind if they give it one last go. Just not sure who it is for. Tmac? Wasn't great but the only established KPF who is fit. Smith? Maybe he moves to sub but he doesn't deserve to and is there on merit.

People having different opinions to you doesn't mean they know nothing about football...

1.  I'm not concerned about the 'outs' from last week's teams and injuries.

Outs:

  • Carlton:  Martin, McKay
  • Melbourne:  Brayshaw, JvR

Rumoured Injuries:

  • Carlton:
    • Cripps (Ribs)
    • Pitttonet (Knee)
    • Acres (Shoulder)
  • Melbourne:
    • Oliver:  Knee
    • Gawn:  Foot
    • Petracca:  (ankle?)

Both teams missing key players and both teams have key players battered and bruised (who will play) so will match up fairly evenly.  As the missing and battered are in the same part of the ground it evens up the field a bit more.

So imv we can relax about our depleted resources disadvantaging us in this game.

2.  Carlton's 'one wood' is winning centre clearances.  We beat them at the coal face we will be half way home.  They seem to not be able to play out four quarters whereas we finish well.   We should win.

3,  My major reservation is their potential physicality.  I'm not sure they have any 'attack dogs' like Coll do.  but they are coached by one of the toughest players of all time.  Having seen what Coll did to us early last week Voss may bring out their aggression and play in 'beast mode' early.  I doubt they can sustain it for a whole game.

To counter that we need our aggressive players (May, Viney, Salem, Sparrow, Kozzie) to be (legally) aggressive from the get go.  A repeat of the first 5 minutes of the 2021 GF will do very nicely.

4.  Dees by 2-3 goals.

Surely Hibberd plays in front of Salem if there needs to be a small for a tall

Hibberd was great against Elliot, perfect match up for Owies, Motlop or Durdin if selected

Salem ineffective for over a month

Surley The Pig plays

He can’t play 4 games in a row and we need him on Cameron and Elliot the following 2 weeks, he has to rest this week.

Why are we wanting to go taller in our defence?  McKay can't play, Martin who is 'mid sized' is out, and Silvagni sounds like he's not fit.  Other than the resting ruck who is up forward other than Curnow?
I agree we play better when we can free up Lever. But Hibberd isn't too small for what we are up against I don't think.

I'd be ok with bringing Spargo and Jordon in, Petracca forward more. TMac to chop out in the ruck.

Feeling ok about this match against Carlton actually.

Seriously?? we need to win this week, there’s no following 2 weeks if we lose

Do you think beating Carlton is a given tomorrow?

Like so many others, I feel totally flat after the Maynard debacle.

I'm going to the match tomorrow. I guess I'll get my mojo back by then. Hopefully the players do the same, particularly at the start of the match!!

good points, thanks GYM

I still prefer to not play Grundy for the reasons I've stated but good to understand the thinking

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
