I'm totally confused. I thought the discussion was about finals games against Collingwood in 1988 and 1989. Flower's last game was in 1987. So, when was this Danny Hughes/BT game?

He won't be in the middle for any more than 5/10% of the game - so yeah, he can (& will) play on him on the night.

    For sure, which is why Kosi needs to play deep. The Pies get a lot of drive from him at half back.

    If Kosi is playing out of the square, ala Charlie Cameron, it becomes a totally different proposition because you cannot take your eyes off of him for even one second when he's hovering around the goals. It worked well last week when Melksham came off and I hope to see it again next Thursday.

    I have a feeling we are going to pull a few new things in finals. Kosi will play more midfield and then go deep, and I think Gawn will float behind the ball more to help out the defenders, especially if Tmac comes in.

    Viney needs to have a chat to him. ..or get Kozzie to put knee into his back a few times.

    There will of course be those pure of thought who detest 'thuggery'...  well.. Footy ,like a lot of contact sport at its highest level can attract a bit of niggle. There are strangely enough quite a few Bully Boys out there that like to play a bit naughty.

    Bullies are dealt with the same everywhere

    As long as Cox and his ilk think they can run amok unfettered..... they will...and do.

    Some will suggest either let the scoreboard do your bidding...or rely on the umps.

    Well..never rely on maggots...  and the scoreboard won't help your team-mate as he's on his knees gasping after some dog act.

    Without doubt Cox or other will be given instructions to touch up a few of us...esp if we do nothing.

    That's a mind game win right there.

    It would be bold but this is why I suggested it on Sun. I don't want any situation where we wish we had him in there. There are a ton of people saying we need to stand up to Cox and all the other Max snipers but if Max his rucking on his own that plays more into this not less. You've also got someone who has intel on the opposition and probably used to bathe these little tikers at training on a weekly basis. 

    It is not my preferred lineup to bring Grundy in but it would give them something else to think about as they think of pummeling Max all day. 

    And if this isn't the way to go the no problem but what else should we do because the cavalry WILL be coming for Max. You can bet on it.

    max being attacked is one or our very few achilles heels.

    Could be good insurance.

    The forward line this year has been a fascination to me - some in the media intimate it’s a massive issue and liability and I would have agreed a couple of months ago due to two things; no Fritsch, Brown, TMac, and Melksham meant not much forward craft and nous, and our forward connection was really down with little delivery to options, but the remedies have been impressive.     Petracca - obvious one and a powerful one made even more so with Oliver coming back.

    Smith being trusted - I came down for the Carl-Freo-Coll games and he was avoided in 1-1 contests like the plague but now there is more trust there.

    Pickett out of the square - last week against the Swans he was a 5’8 Tony Lockett putting the fear of god into people kidneys coming out of the square. SCG is a unique ground but there is another option that Kozzie is more than happy to execute. He never can mark it so he may as well knee someone in the back of the head.

     

    What we are left with after the last 8 weeks is a really potent number of options regardless of if they go small or tall with TMac. IF our forward connection is good enough and we look to hit the option and not blast away, we have a good enough forward line to kick a winning score.

    Well done to Goodwin and Stafford.

    Looks very susceptible playing that close to goal.

    Don't remember that, wow imagine if they had that power now the goal umpires.

    Can't even determine if a ball has hit the post or a ball has missed a hand by a foot.

    I thought that they (and boundary umpires) are still allowed to do so today, albeit it's been many years since I've seen it happen.

    I’m 51 and remember both 88 and 89 vs Pies.

    Loved 87 as it was our first finals in my lifetime but 88 was also special knocking off two big clubs in Pies and Blues in consecutive finals

    That's a great call. 

    Assuming Quaynor goes to Koz, in addition to perhaps challenging him defensively, playing Koz out of the square also negates the offensive impact of Qualynor, who loves to intercept and bounce of half back (which is even more crucial with no Nick Daicos) and means Koz is always close to goal and a chance of scoring. 

    I suspect Goody actually wants koz to fly for pack marks rather than stay down. He has been doing it all season and would have stopped doing so if Goody told him to. Playing out of the square means Koz can continue to fly for pack marks and crunch the oppo defenders. Might even take a speccy for the ages too at some point!

    I just watched the replay of the KB match. It seems to me that unfortunately Cox can get Max, usually by pretty poor tactics. On the other hand, Grundy treats him with contempt - he knows just how to play him. So I think he should be picked, as a ruckman, to share with Max. Normally I like to have Tommo in the backline but if we play Max and Grundy, Max can probably drop back and be the third tall in defence,

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie? 
      Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact.
