Darren Bennet v Essendon. Windy Hill. Round 16, 1990.

A performance I witnessed with my own eyes and one I will never forget. Brilliant.

Yes it was, I was there to witness  a great comeback in the last quarter, and I had  a good altercation with an essendon supporter outside the ground after the game.

Yes, yes yes. What a sensation DB was.

See that ball in his set shot routine in the vid. It does not move at all! No fluffing around and popping it every which way.

Does anyone remember the long kicking comps they used to have before grand finals? Pretty sure DB won it one year with a kick from the centre circle at the G. Longest kick I have ever seen, other than the one by Jeff Fehring.

Wonder how DB would fare against another Melbourne great, Fred Fanning, who supposedly drop kicked the ball 105 metres during the 1939 grand final.

Sometimes it looked like DB kicked the ball higher than longer:

Adrian Burns for Essendon was filth. Elbowed Jimmy in the head that day. Then broke the collarbone of our GM Alan Richardson in the 1990 semi (in a sling tackle) which caused him to miss the premiership win for Collingwood that year

My pet hate when they toss the ball around as they have a set shot, just dumb.

Darren Bennett’s goal kicking was a wonder for most of his career but like all footballers he had his wobbles. Towards the end of his career with us his general field and goal kicking deteriorated markedly. Lost a lot of confidence due to persistent injuries. If he could have managed his fitness he would have become our all time best goal kicker I believe. He made the right choice going to the NFL where he would only be relying on his prodigious kicking talent with minimal game time and less punishment on his body.

It's a regret of mine that I never went to Windy Hill.

You are not missing anything. Was worst ground for an away supporter and even worse than Victoria Park.

Liam Jurrah was probably the best set shot I've seen. He was better than Darren Bennett.

Brad Green was a better set shot than Jurrah. Surely you seem him.

Darren Bennett was a long kick, not a very accurate one tho. He's also the reason I got into Yank Sports. He made me choose the San Diego Chargers, where he became a Legend, but the second team i chose was the Patriots. Because No-one went for them. I've been a Patriot longer than Tom Brady. 1994-1995 Bennett made it.  I have 2 teams in all American Sports because there's so many. Patriots and Chargers...San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons... hated Michael Jordan and the Bull****ters... Red Wings and NJ Devils... obvious reason. Boston Red Sox only in the Baseball.

I think he was just showing off with that shot for goal.  Could have comfortably got another 5m closer to the man on the mark and kicked from around 55m as the man on the mark seemed to be not much further out than 45m.

Not many players these days can reliability make the distance from 55m, but Bennett consistently kicked them from 60m.

I cant remember who we were playing... but Bennett had posession of the ball on the boundary.    He was about 55/60 at he mark so kicking another 5/10.

A mate... non Dee....  he's got no chance...

Me...   betcha a beer.......

Yep... enjoyed that one. .... 🍻 😉

About the best kick I've seen.

And if you wanna talk stats then you never seen AJ over a 3 year career.  Crushes Liam. Loved Liam Loved Allen even more but if i was asking for a goal outside 50, or from any angle inside 50, i would say Brad was a chance during a 12 year Career and the closest I've seen to as good a kick as Matty Lloyd. Apologies if you feel I'm bickering.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
