Goodwin rank among AFL coaches

We need a change to the assistant coaches at the end of the season. Bring in some fresh ideas. The midfield and forwardline especially is not working.

Goodwin is a good off field coach. Players love him and culturally he’s done so much for the team. But we need to freshen things up in the box.

Fish rot at the head...... take a minute to let that mull.

Assistants only do the masters bidding.

Swapping them.is like deckchairs really.

The reality is unsettling for some.

The thing the coach is supposed to do....is to WIN games.

Our last 12 months has been telling. You can blame the playing group only so much as the form goes up and down. We lack system and method that can win games.

I’d be happier to accept a loss knowing we are trying to play different, more boldly - use corridor some more. But the stubbornness will cost us 2023 and I cannot really see Goodwin changing anything next year.

I don’t think Yze or Choco will be with us next year so we need to think who we going to target.

After we beat Richmond.

Hardwick in his presser said he knew exactly how we would play and how to beat us. They executed their game style which was effective but they just had way too many good players out to get the job done.

He was essentially saying he outcoached Goodwin. Whilst it has a sour grapes vibe, he was, essentially, right.

Further, Goodwin's favourite saying is that we didn't get the game on our terms. Effectively he's saying we play in a comfort zone and if things aren't going the way we like it, we can't adapt in game.

Didn't take a minute to realise this post is laughable. Stupid. Geelong lost again. Sack Scott.

Apart from when we swapped in Yze and he deck chaired our midfield to sharing the ball far more and won a flag.

Assistant coaches get the time to work with groups of players more specifically.

And they bring ideas to collaborate with the head coach.

The greatest coaches have always had incredible staff supporting them. Ignoring that is stupid.

Fresh eyes in and around Goodwin.

His press conferences are so boring he may as well not do them.

Unfortunately for our players, we have a game style that just doesn't excite and at the moment, so many of our good players are just underperforming every game.

Our skills and ball handling this season have been so poor, it's unbelievable. And teams really do just know how to disarm us.

It's alarming given the quality on our list.

Something needs to change, not sure it's Goody getting the flick. But list, game plan, assistant coaches all need to be addressed over the offseason.

DS  you're normally more in tune

The game plan/style etc is set by the Coach...

Im not ignoring them... but they simply carry out THEIR  part of the jigsaw as determined by SG

Changing them.... assistants is not the answer.

Its not that hard to fathom...  not really.

We play dumb.... dumb for 2023.... as others have a much better formula.

We have very good talent....wasted and burnt.

The evidence is right in front of people.

The coach sets the menu but it’s up to the assistants to get every group of players to execute.

If you don’t think Yze didn’t make a huge difference to our midfield in 2021 then I don’t know what more I can say.

Or Leppa at Richmond and Collingwood or Bevo and Adam Simpson at Hawthorn under Clarko

It’s not 1975 any more, it takes a team of coaches and part of that is fresh experts who know how implement different ideas.

But has Yze improved them since 21?

I have never asked for a change since the Mark Neeld days, but I think Goody has shown a real lack to adapt in the previous 2 years. Not sure if he is stubborn or just lacking in tactical skill. I think we will continue the same path as we have since round 10 last year. This will be Goodys last year I feel and we will be outside our window next year.

The one thing that concerns me at the moment from a coaching perspective is that, accordingly to Goodwin, we still don’t know what our best mix is. We don’t know what the forward line should look like, or how Gawn and Grundy are best used together, or what the midfield mix needs to be. Hell we haven’t even got a settled back 6.

Now I understand that injuries have made that more difficult, but at nearly the halfway mark of the season, for the coaches not to know what they ultimately want the side to look like in September, is really really worrying. They’ve had a whole pre season to work it out and yet here we are still confused.

At what point is it on the players to get the job done?

We've been here before and the answer was always the same. The players need to step up.

We’re paying for the list decisions made in order to win the flag and the list inaction the last 2 years.

Tomlinson was a panic job post 2019 to get a wing. BBB a desperation move to win a flag, it worked, but it really hurts now! Recontracting T Mc. Trading up in the mess of the 2020 draft and taking Laurie now seems a costly mistake.

Then we took lost our quickest players in Baker, Hunt and Bedford and our only prime age key forward in Weid.

Gawn has to play more forward which clearly isn’t his go. Grundy at times might out perform Jackson but he isn’t bringing the same mobility as a forward that let us play Ben Brown in the same side.

How are we meant to play a more attacking run and carry plan if our midfield and backline have only got slower by getting Hunter and sticking with Brayshaw?

Our defenders still refuse to run the ball out through the fat side or corridor and I can’t believe that’s all coaching. If it is a fresh backline assistant would help.

A tall defender who trusts their ability to run and kick and a genuinely speedy small defender would open things up. As would an on baller who gut runs to receive to take the load of Clarry. Not to mention one who can kick!

And it doesn't really need saying, but I will anyway. It's round 11. It's even a bit early for the let's get new assistants around Goodwin, let alone the old dopey one, Goodwin fluked the flag.

Well, his win-loss rate in both the home & away season and in finals is a little better than Alistair Clarkson's, so let's give him another 230 games to see how he goes.

Gonna suggest Clarkson had a pretty good list to work with, too.

We could win the flag and I’d still think 3-5 years is about the appropriate length of time for most assistants. Even if you just shuffle the jobs.

A couple of weeks ago a Pies supporter told me Goodwin is not a great coach, almost saying he was lucky to have a flag and overrated.

I actually tried to defend Goodwin's coaching and told him about how good his defensive structures are and how the players believed in him, almost like a father figure.

I am now starting to believe that what my Pies colleague said is true, Goodwin is overrated. I started to go through all the seasons we have been under his wing, lots of wasted seasons and missed opportunities (see 2017 and 2020).

I still believe we have a top 5 list, is the coach good enough for this list?

Where would you place Goodwin among all the current AFL coaches? Top 6? Not even top 8?

A Colonwood person is about the last place I'd been looking for informed opinion.

The thing is, let's say one area of the ground goes through the roof in the second half of the year, we win the flag, and the players all credit it with that assistant etc etc.

You're saying, nup, I have an arbitrary 3-5 year rule that assistants must move on, sorry, I know you helped us win two flags in three years and there was a second place finish in there too, but it's off you pop.

You can't be making those sorts of decisions at this stage. Let's give it a month and if nothing has changed, by all means, let's consider these sorts of decisions then.

Really?

Best 22’s are never entirely settled and we bought in Bowser only weeks from finals in 2021 for instance.

But I’d suggest at this stage we’re happy with the 2 talls and Hibbo down back. We’re happy with Petty and JVR up forward we just need Petty healthy and to ride some bumps with JVR.

What to do with Gus and I suspect whether we need an extra mid rather than one of the small forwards might be questions we’re yet to answer but I don’t think it’s that unsettled.

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
