Yes a lot has to go right and there is an element of luck involved, however I am also a believer in making your own luck.

There are things that we can control that we simply are not maximising. Things such as effort and mindset, game plans and willingness to take the game on, instead of waiting for things to happen.

It’s almost as if we are afraid to make a move due to making a mistake, so we don’t make a move at all. We need to be more cavalier moving into the forward line, instead of the predictable long bomb. We also need to fix up our brainfades in the backline.

i missed the game and after reading this thread you would have thought we were playing witches hats and have no talent at all.  I watched it today and Freo really need some credit as they played a finals brand and we almost never had any space.  Yes a lot of skill errors on both sides, but mostly under huge pressure.  I don’t know what the pressure ratings were for the entire game but half way through the last we were at 237 and Freo about 215.  Both are off the charts (AFL average is 180).

No teams deal with pressure well.  Either one team drops the ball and gets run over, or the games turn into a scrap (like this game). Replay that game 10x and I think we win it 8x and if either we or Freo bring that pressure into every game from now on then both will be top 4 at seasons end.

He did land on it at one point and got up slowly.  Seemed to shake it off as he got up though.  Reaction was similar to that of a minor stinger.

Why would you do that  ? Kings Birthday gets massively overrated on here.  It's one game worth 4 points just like any other.

I'd much prefer to beat those black and white bastids in September rather than June.

I agree with you. KB’s not exactly an 8-point game anymore since they’re 12 points ahead of us. As sweet as it would be to see them off, it’s just another four points on offer. I’ve read elsewhere here a theory that we have been doing extra training (trying to avoid the L-word) in preparation for the Collingwood game. I don’t understand why we would do this, since every game is worth the same amount for a win. All you here from the footy department is that every week is just another game with 4 points on offer, so wouldn’t we try to make sure our output is as even as possible in all 23 games?

Maybe.  Tom is strong, competitive, defensive, and can kick long vital goals. I did wonder in the distant past if a fully committed, fully fit Colin Sylvia could also have filled this rôle but an and b never occurred or at best aligned.

Just watched a some " highlights".

That free to Amiss against May in the first was one of the worst decisions I have seen this year . And I've seen a few. Fgs, Maysie was standing still, Amiss jumps on his back way too  early and somehow he gets the free.

It's like the umps are making it up as they go along sometimes.

Making it up, or following directions from HQ perhaps, which does tend to further the great conspiracy theory

Reality we have beaten 1 team in the current top 8 the dogs since our straight sets exit in the 2022  finals! It’s either our players have dropped off or Goodys game plan has been worked out!

Maybe it is both?

Interesting @watson11 I actually watched it again last night and felt similar - it was a serious contest.

We were the better team overall but still managed to lose the game - had we won it would have been close given the pressure. If Oliver and Petty played, we probably win that game 9 of 10 times. I'm still worried about what our plan is to counter Carlton's big mobile forwards - Lever in particular looks a bit out of sorts. If he mans up on Curnow or McKay we have to hope they shank every kick because I think they will get plenty of the ball. Problem is we haven't got Petty so its only Joel Smith or maybe Schache that could come in - Disco is too small for either of those guys.

So in selection this week I'd focusing on how we structure up defensively - needing one more tall and I'd be giving Chandler a rest at Casey. I haven't watched the Casey game yet but someone must deserve a chance.

What Freo do well, they do really well. A very well drilled side with a well functioning back six. Didn't quite think they'd have the fire power to get us especially considering our ability to score lately but they played really well.

Forget logic, as others have said the list is not as great as people think. It’s a good list but not at the level some think.

I disagree and I think this comment is being thrown around as a copout (not just by you but I've picked on your post).

The list is primed for multiple cracks at a flag and if we only get 1 out of this group it will be a massive underachievement (just like the 2000 Bombers, the 95 Blues etc)

Just having a midfield of Gawn, Grundy, Petracca, Oliver, Viney let alone a defense led by May, Lever and Salem with Fritsch and Pickett up forward is enough to say that the list is up there with the best in the AFL. Who currently has a better list? I would say ours is better than the Pies for example but they are wringing far more out of their talent.

Our list is good however I feel the younger one's are not coming along as quick as we would like plus some of the senior guys are a little off at moment. No panic yet as we have not even hit the half way mark. Remember the Cats last year had some early bad one's and flew home. We are not playing well at the moment and only lost by 4 and 7 points to top 8 teams. Plenty of room for improvement starting Friday night. I hope!!.

Collingwood have a far better list than us. Much better backline, deeper and more balanced midfield, much more even forward line.

Goodwin crafted the perfect system to get the most out of our stars but so many of our players are one dimensional and fit in certain roles. It’s not a surprise that injuries or shifts in the game have opened up deficiencies quickly.

We also maxed out every talented player on the list for the 21 flag. The only recent high pick who didn’t play that day was Laurie who still isn’t at the level.

Look at what Richmond added in 2019 to cover really only the loss of Rance:

Richmond fielded sixteen of the twenty-two players who had been part of its premiership team in 2017: Pickett, Tom Lynch, Shai Bolton, Ivan Soldo, Jayden Short and Liam Baker were the new players

Grundy for Jackson and the downgrade that forces on Max, the tail end of Hunter, McVee, Chandler and a baby tall in JVR isn’t enough.

I have no idea whether we're trying to time it for Collingwood, that's pure guesswork, but this is why it's so folly to be picking apart results at Round 10 and 11, and saying ridiculous things like sack the coach, we won't make the 8 and other such nuffiness (I'm not saying you've ever said remotely anything like this btw).

As for what I hope, I really do hope we're targeting that Collingwood game.

There is no logic in focusing on one 4 point game (Collingwood) over another 4 point game against Freo.

Potentially, although from a psychological perspective, the club may feel it's important to get one up on them at this stage of the year. @Engorged Onion, you probably don't agree with this? However, that may well be the club's thinking. And to perform on the big stage.

We won CPs in every quarter except the third when we lost by 3.

Clearances though we lost in each quarter except the last.

That’s interesting in itself though - it wasn’t a comprehensive failure at contest but it was another game where we had enough contested ball but conceded too many exits from stoppages (and then couldn’t stop them scoring from those exits).

I think we may have to tweak our approach to stoppage clearances.

I believe in our quest to score (both on slingshot from D50 and inside our A50), we leave too much space around the contest for teams to chain out of when we lose clearance. Of course, it works the other way around too, but I think our ability to defend D50 is more important than slingshot.

If I'm right, maybe it's a case of clogging up D50 at stoppages and sacrificing an easier slingshot/handball chain out of our D50, but keep the space in the A50 at stoppages, and back our defensive system to stop teams scoring when they chain out of our A50.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
