    The gameplan is outdated, stagnant and predictable. It never changes. We are wasting an excellent list and the twilight years of Gawn and May with poor coaching. 
     

    Compare our stagnant and robotic gameplay to the freedom, attack and aggression of Collingwood. 
     

    Pies are standing up for their Daisoc when he was getting physical attention and absolutely ruthless with their attack on the man and the ball.  And we are helping the opposition players off the ground with a pat on the back.
     

    We are far too nice, poorly coached and not hungry enough to trouble September. And mark my words we are no chance on Kings Birthday.

    Outcoached again. Mays absurd kick outs, selecting TMac, smashed at clearances, no forward system. I’m sorry but these are coaching flaws. Had they kicked straight we’d have been dead at half time. Bemoan the umpiring, JVR’s mistakes but the facts are plain to see. We’re running a Rolls Royce on dirty tractor diesel with Goodwin at the helm

    and yes can we please go into bat for our team mates and let the opposition pick themselves up. [censored]!

    In a heavy wet game metres gained is a crucial stat and we allowed Houston, Rozee, Williams and Butters to each make 500m+ gained, for almost 3km between the four of them.

    Meanwhile, Darcy Byrne-Jones laid more tackles inside 50 than our entire team.

    Our most obvious poor games from senior players were Langdon, Viney, Pickett and Brayshaw, but I also think Neal-Bullen was either terribly misused or completely failed to do his defensive pressure job on any of those ball movers mentioned.

    Port are known for their fast movement and ability to create 1v1s in attack at the risk of 1v1s on the rebound against them (as noted in the 'what they are saying at' thread) and combining that with the wet weather disturbing our intercept game, it was a double exposure which we didn't handle well at all, either as players or in tactical adaptation.

    As a side note -

    Clayton Oliver actually had another excellent game, leading clearances, tackles and contested possessions, and being amongst our best for score involvements, metres gained and, once again, the curious story of his intercept possessions. I don't know what people expect of him but he was without doubt among our best.

    And the 'Steven May kicking in long to the left' obsession people have is getting tiresome. It is well established that as a set-up it is the most effective kick-out routine in the AFL on the balance of points scored vs points conceded. Not much May, or the plan, can do to account for two rucks taking only two marks (none contested) in a game and not even being effective at bring it down to teammates.

    Port simply cleaner and harder when it counted. Comical umpiring but that’s become the standard in this league. Perfectly summed up by being whistle happy all night yet failing to pay the most blatant protected zone 50 we will likely see all year. Could very well have flipped the result.

    Has to be one of Max’s most ineffectual games. Not sure what it is about this mob that spooks him.

    Credit to Trac who was clearly not 100% but found a way to impose himself on the game. Would’ve been a big part of the win if we had pinched it.

    The inconsistency of umpiring - whether it’s dissent, the stand rule, holding the ball or obstructing a 50m penalty - does my bloody head in!!!!

    Jono Brown gave the answer on the non 2nd 50, said if they paid it and it was clear there, MFC could have won.That’s why it wasn’t paid, like plenty of other blatant frees.

    Wish Chris Scott was our coach just for the media conference.

    How in the Hell could our coaches watch Butters run around like he did tonight?? We are becoming a soft and predictable side to coach against and to play against..And as for May and those kick outs WTF

    It only works when you have players at the drop of the ball to get the ball when it hits the deck. Melbourne players that is.

    You are right, but we don’t have the cattle to play that brand. 80% of our side can’t hit a target under pressure and the 20% who can can’t win a ground ball.

    Our side is built for contest, stoppage and defence. It will be until we turn the list over by about 50%. So expect much of the same.

    What we need to do with our list as Power is similar is the forward half game. 76 of 80 Powers’ points came from forward half turn over or stoppage. 
     

    While most of ours come from defensive half. It’s hard to win games like that and it all boils down to effort. It’s been plain to see for weeks now. We are not working hard enough.

    Not so sure about that. Dixon and Marshall missing tonight. Horne-Francis and Butters are dead-set guns. Can see them staying in the top 4.

    Port knew to put two or three players directly behind the pack May was kicking to, to either receive the ball knocked outover the top or the contested ball they won when it was fed out to them.

    If the press are worth their salt they’ll ask Goodwin why we conceded 40 or so touches and 2 goals to Butters who was single handedly responsible for his clubs win.

And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season.
