Farewell James Harmes

Straight swap for Hollands thanks.

Melbourne supporter, come premiership player.  In his prime at 27.

No player is perfect, I get players have limitations but at his best can offer something.

Its a no from me if a 2nd or 3rd rounder is the only offer, would rather keep, unless he wants to leave, in which case I would honour his wishes.

Dr Evil Whatever GIF

I’d rather we try and change the list when it’s not up to scratch than just sticking our heads in the sand.

Besides which one of Harmes, Grundy, Hibberd, Laurie, Jordon, Dunstan, D Smith and Brown would you consider as indispensable?

Not getting any younger at 28?

Surprised other clubs are interested. Its amazing what a Premiership can do for your CV.

Dont mind if he sticks around unless hes tradeable for a decent medium forward.

Definitely trade Jordon.

Brown Tmac retire please. Sadly Melksham too  unless Goodwin wants him to stay. Good role border to have around.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but Jordon is a free agent.

The reason why we want to trade Harmes out surely is because he's not in our Top 23 now and is a free agent next year. We'd get more for him now and he'd get more certainty and guaranteed game time elsewhere. In both the Club's and his best interests.

Not best 22 certainly , but good depth . Definately would have preferred him over Laurie  and Jordon in the finals this year if he was fit

Only about a million times. I know posters have varying opinions on Jordon but the considerations are totally different for a free agent and a contracted player.

I’m not sure he gets guaranteed game time anywhere

Look at it from his perspective. He plays 5-10 games next year and he's out of contract so Melbourne could delist him if there's no interest. He moves now, gets a multi-year contract, more likelihood of game time elsewhere.

From Melbourne's perspective: he walks next year (and we are subject to the vagaries of AFL free market compensation) or his form drops off and his value decreases. We should trade him because he's likely worth more this yer than next year and there's no compelling reason to have him on the list. We need to improve the list and free up spots. That's more important than depth. If there was some upside for him then it would be different. Others are younger and improving.

A bit harsh! I guess we'll see if there's any interest out there. If other clubs are interested they won't be offering him a multi-year contract because they're after depth.

If we can get a second rounder or early 3rd rounder for a casey player that is great business

To be fair, you’ve essentially only listed 3 players in your list being Harmes, Laurie and Brown given the others have retired or want to go elsewhere.

So who are the other 5?

I know in May I mentioned in this thread Geelong. Now hearing Gold Coast under Dimma.
I wonder what that means in terms of picks or possible player trade with GC?

He has a Brandan Ellis vibe, would suit IMO

About 3 weeks ago at Gosches l was talking to another supporter- who l had never met before. He claimed to know James’s family. And that he was going to the Bombers next year.So we will see.

The salary cap relief is also important, we'd be freeing up 400-500k that could be put towards a classy mid/forward or we could draft a young kid with a net saving if $350k+ and back in our up coming brigade of players like Laurie and Taj to fill the gap that Harmes leaves over the next couple of seasons.

Yes, several retirements in there. Doesn’t matter how the players’ leave, trade/delist/retire, they’ll all need to be replaced and that’s how the list gets refreshed. That’s where my 8 come from.

I could’ve easily gone 10-12, but that would destroy the stability.

Shaun Mannagh’s Norm Goss medal begs to differ. 😁
Hollands was the Suns’ best but Werribee’s Mannagh was BOG.

And pretty hard not to give him BOG, with 6 goals to go along with 27 possessions

If Harmes leaving allows us to keep JJ I'm fine with that.

Also have to remember we will have some decent players coming in the draft this year and have players like Howes, Woewodin and Laurie developing nicely in the 2s.

Have always loved Harmesy, but may be a win-win for both the club and Harmesy.

Im the opposite would rather keep Harmes than the Vanilla Slice Jordan!🤮

If harmes goes to gold coast I wouldn't be unhappy with pick 5 and harmes for pick 4.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
