Worth bearing in mind that Tomlinson & McKay could attract compensation picks inside the top 10. That could either work to create more opportunity or lead to the complete opposite.

At least we have some chips to play with and agree with other that Reid is far from the only player worth snaking up the ladder for.

Tomlinson?!

The way some have been talking lately on Demonland we won't need to trade into the top pick.

We're a shoo-in to finish last and will probably also be offered a priority pick.

But I was told we are in crisis!

I reckon we should have a crack at Himmelberg come to think of it!

I like him, can play either end, hits the contest hard and brings it to ground if he doesn’t win it

  • 2 weeks later...

Giants are reportedly making a play for Pick 1.  They are the best placed with their own and Richmond's first round picks, currently # 4 and #6.  Throw in Cogniglio, a WA recruit which would also help GWS's sal cap.

With Freo rising, the Academy and FA players pushing first round picks down the order none of our 2 1sts plus F1 picks are likely to be in the top 10

I would like us to get Zane Duursma!!

What does the article actually say, please, for those of us without subscriptions to the HUN? :)

that we're keen on reid, as is every club in the competition, but most times pick #1 doesn't end up being the premium pick out of a draft

it speculates that we could trade pick 16 (1067 points) and pick 27 (703 points) for a total of 1770 points to gc17 in exchange for pick 8 (1551)

that would see us have - based upon current ladder positions - pick 8, pick 9 from freo, and our future first, plus our own second rounder (pick 35) to offer to move up to pick 1

alternatively we could just go to the draft and spread the talent

honestly, it's as speculative an article as many of the postulations you'll see here - no quotes, no insight, no detail

edit: i mean, they call blake howes an "athletic goal kicker" - the kid has literally been groomed to be a mid-sized rebounding defender ffs

As you say, it is really just common sense speculation. The deal with Gold Coast certainly makes sense and having pick 8 and 9 in this draft looks like a terrific position.

A little side question; will that notional pick 35 be good enough to get us Sam van Rooyen? 😉

Trade our future first along with our current 2nd round pick for a lateish first rounder (15-18) and bring more talent in (trade or draft).

Id much rather picks 8, 9 & 16 in the draft than just pick 1.

If Sam is worth his pick, take him. Drafting brothers has a bit of a Cockatoo Collins bros smell to it.

GWS should be banned from ruining another pick 1 and hence shouldn’t be allowed to trade it to WC.

We need 1-2 ready to-go outside ball users that are fast and lethal by foot. Inside mids are a dime a dozen  and you can find them at every draft. Use one of our other picks to try and Daniel Curtain who’ll be an AA CHB/FB in 5-7 years time.

That would be perfect for us. Either scenario is good. Reid would be great. But bringing in multiple first rounders would also be ideal, given we have JVR and Jefferson developing - we could target best available with 8, 9, 16

Would still like to us to use a couple of those picks to climb up the order, even if it’s not for pick 1. Being able to make a choice from Duursma, Caddy, Watson or Wilson would be excellent. Think one of those cliffs in quality JT talks about probably kicks in at that pick 8 mark.

The Championships will absolutely help crystallise the order, but gee GC look like their getting a windfall this year.

Given our number of quality players in their prime - and thus the difficulty of breaking into the 22 - I would favour trading picks to move up the order.

There's always openings for absolute top level talent but I think we'll struggle to give three first rounders the opportunities they need to develop optimally.

Shame to have another James Jordon situation of a potential 200 game player limited to being a depth player (noting that JJ was pick 33 and not first round which would be even worse).

I agree. I'm still hoping we keep JJ on our list (even it it means we have to trade Harmes as a pre-agent).

Can someone explain how the draft works? I thought each club had to pick a minimum of 3 players each year but don't know whether that includes rookies & traded picks. i.e. there's 92 picks in 2023 which is 5 rounds for each plus 2 Special Acceptance picks for North Melbourne (which they traded). These were the provisional picks based on 2022 finishing order:

https://www.draftguru.com.au/years/2023/provisional-draft-order

I assume that that 92 would be expanded further to cover any compensation picks for free agents changing clubs this year. Geelong only has 2 picks (18, 92) as they've future-traded picks 37, 56 & 74. Have they effectively already met their 2023 obligations through those trades, or would they have to use 18, 92 and trade in a rookie? Or maybe 18 and 2 rookies?

First I think you mean Eagles trade 1 to Giants, not the other way round.

Second Curtin will be an Eagle if they trade 1.

Kane Cornes in today's Age....

"But Reid’s career would be at risk of stagnating, rather than flourishing, on the big stage should he, as expected, be drafted by the Eagles.

After Jason Horne-Francis’ exit from North Melbourne just a year after being announced at No.1, Reid should make it very clear to the Eagles that he could do the same. He would only need to tell West Coast of his intent to return home to a Victorian club after his mandatory two-year contract expires, if not sooner.

If Reid and his management group are savvy and strategic, they can engineer the Eagles into trading the No.1 pick to Melbourne, which is prepared to offer multiple first-round selections in return for the first crack at securing Reid."

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
