Question from me

What do you make of the regular Jack Viney bagging on DL?

He plays in a scrappy part of the field, and is first touch in many contested sequences. It's hardly fair to expect him to compete with likes of Bowey for DE%

He had 7 x CLR  5 x I50 and 9 x SI against WCE (at 82%DE + 1 goal)

And 5 x CLR  6 x I50 and 4 x SI (all I50s resulting in goals) against SYD (at 58%DE)

I think he's thriving and playing some of his best footy.

Anyone who bags Jack doesn't watch the games live. He's absolutely brutal at the ball day long. Does alot of the dirty work.  Was super impressive on the weekend.

Re Milkshake and the 100 mfc games, I don't buy it but I think Melksham is a goody favourite -  I think he's seen as good sized utility with an experienced head - a workable option in many injury or game situations for the sub

would an AFL club really gift a player who has already achieved that milestone (and in melk's case also the 200-game milestone) 5-6 games to get them to 100 games for a new club (i assume the logic is by doing so it means any future father son/daughter rule is on the table)?

Gift? No. But I can imagine that if two players were seen on level pegging for the sub role, then the Club may give it to the bloke who is only 3 games from life membership.
Personally I want Jake to get to 100 games for the Club, it is a significant achievement. He probably wants to too. As long as it isn’t detrimental to the team performance there is still room for a bit of feel good

Langdon looks really refreshed, the smart acquisition of Hunter has helped a lot. As good as Langdon has been the last two seasons we became predictable with him being on the one wing for the entire match. Love watching him on both sides of the ground now, started to hit his straps the last two weeks. He's around 92% TOG so far this season, just enough of a rest to recharge the marathon man. Thoughts?

Personally, I think there is space to get someone to 100 games for father son rule, especially if they have a couple of kids.

With all of the equalisation measures, there are few areas that can be exploited as an advantage.

If you have two players pretty equal for the sub role, I think you'd be willing to roll the dice on a couple of sub games to get him there.

Maybe, I just find it hard to believe a coach/selection committee is thinking about a highly unlikely potential recruit in 15-20 years time when they will very likely be long gone compared to trying to win a game this weekend. They wouldn't pick a player on that reason alone, like you say they would have to be a legitimate selection for the sub role. The idea that a player is being gifted games for this reason I just find ludicrous.

Yeah, I agree. Especially in the last two games, he's been so effective. I was trying to find his disposal efficiency stats. He rarely wastes the ball and is usually really proactive with his ball use. I watched him closely against the swans. He never stops moving, particularly around the contest he's always relocating to receive the ball, would be so annoying to play on. I would think it's also very tricky to tag a wing.

My silly theory at the start of the season is that both Ed and Brown would play better without the long hair. I only say this because I played local footy and basketball with long hair for years and only in recent times chopped it off to find how much less annoying and a hindrance it is. Perhaps both of those two are playing more freely 😋

Yup, not gifted, but it might get the nod in a line ball call.

Phew there for awhile I thought no poddy, now i can relax.

My question is about JJ , I feel that he is a player that would be in the top 22 in most sides, Do you think at end of season, if not a regular we will be snapped up by the likes of Hawks or Norf or the nose diving Bombers.

Love your work boys.

Regards Dave

With 5 very winnable games coming up in the Bombers, Tigers, North, Suns & Hawks.

I’d expect us to in paper win all 5 of them, putting us 8-1 with what I’d imagine being a robust percentage.

With 3 out of the next 5 being a lot tougher (I’m not giving Freo or the cats any credit).

Can you see the club “managing” any players leading into the Port Adelaide away game?

Grundy is holding up well now atm but give him a month of being the top dog he might need a little freshen up so by the time Max is back (hopefully a week or 2 before King’s bday) we are at full strength and hopefully looking to at one hell of a game v the Pies who we owe from last year!

My only worry is that it seems to be the mid year bye period that in previous years the loading seems to happen, do you think we may alter this tactic this year @binman and load a little later? Or did last years loading not even happen because the playing group was incredibly banged up from the previous year?

How many games did he get in Essendon?

In case he has played 100 for both clubs, does the player make the call in regards to the father-son rule?

100%.  Not every selection choice is as clearcut as so many of the posters here like to make out.  Sometimes it really is splitting hairs and something as trivial as locking in a possible father and son selection 15 years down the track is as good as reason as any to lean one way over another.

Being part of the Demon diaspora don’t get the opportunity to regularly go to the footy like decades back. But did get some continuity over west in the ‘21 finals series. In the preliminary final, Jack Viney ‘live’ set the tone against the sCats.

Uncompromising physicality on his attack on the ball on the inside and flair and creativity on the outside. IMHO best on ground that evening. Pleasingly got the opportunity to compliment him personally later after the game. He was gracious and appreciative of what was due praise for that ‘bravura’ performance.

With the emergence of so many stars in our terrific football team, Jack still works away in his uncompromising, committed fashion often away from the spotlight. A true team player, who will be duly lauded at the completion of his footy career as a Demon great.

Fellas, some of the most brilliant minds were at work on the weekend with the Eagles supporters. Probably the best that I heard was when Fritta was going for a goal they yelled out “Hey Bayley, your hair looks beautiful. Don’t make it miss the goal. Go and get a haircut you [censored]”

I'm not sure why you'd change it when we are winning?  Give him more time to settle into the new role.

So Max Gawn doesn't come back in. Or Salem?

If there is a better option you use it

Another insightful and most enjoyable podcast guys.  We listened intently this morning, as we drove from Port Fairy to Robe along the Great Ocean Road, en route to Adelaide for the Gather Round.   Love your work, love the Dees!!

@Demonland, mannnnnnnn I was at the game and concur with the eagles supporters and their constant whining for frees. They don’t actually watch the game for the game, it’s legitimately all about the umpires. Mental.

I'm watching the replay.

Jeez Louise - not sure what the Eagles fans could possibly moan about.

How many clear holding the ball frees were not paid to the dees!

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int

The Dees played insipid, error riddled & uninspiring footy all night and in a lightning delayed match they eventually succumbed to Collingwood by 46 points at the MCG in the final game of the year. Thank God this season is finally over. Bring on 2025.

    LAST DANCE by The Oracle

Forget the wishful thinking from Magpie fans who think their team can perform yet another miracle and somehow snatch a place in the 2024 finals series when their team takes on the Demons at the MCG on Friday night. It ain’t gunna happen. They can whistle Dixie through their non-existent front teeth but the fact of the matter is that both teams have run their race. The game is a dead rubber — for each of them, this will be the last dance of the season.  And given the history between the two

    RED FACED by Whispering Jack

The wind and the hot unseasonable temperatures together with lights turned on mid game at People First Stadium conspired to leave many Suns players and supporters red faced and gasping for air as the Demons proved a number of points on their way to a nine goal triumph on Saturday afternoon in the Carrara sunshine. Melbourne is the only non-Queensland team to taste victory at this venue in 2024. This surely leaves a number of journalists and media mavens red faced after they rushed to pass
