Man i really hope Viney gets through this without any further issues down the track.

Totally confident in our MD but yeah i dont know...

If Viney plays a full year like he did in 22', then i honestly cant see us losing this flag.

Whoa let’s not get to carried away, it’s round 2 this week

That it's just gone round 1, i couldn't care less tbh. I've watched this mob long enough to know what i see. This year already feels different.

Add a fit Viney to that midfield from Saturday night & let your imagination run wild Billy.

I'll respectfully disagree. Maybe plodder is the wrong term, he's a B grader with A grade smarts and endurance. Picking out one sentence of a three post, beautifully written diatribe is also quite unfair.

To be fair, there are other adjectives that come to mind.

Ohh great. Do you even realise what you have just done? Why not just add that we will never lose again while you’re at it?

if even just one of our players from now until October wakes up with a runny nose, it’s going to be you to blame RL23

Melksham was a great sub. I would be doing the same again on Friday night.
Hot humid night, Melksham comes on fresh in the 2nd Half.

Yes that's true I guess I just want to give JVR a chance sooner than later!

Patience is a virtue!!

We need to win early games. Melksham is a beautiful kick

Perfect for the Sub imo

Woah woah woah, nobody is saying JVR can't be great or better than TMac.

But TMac plays a very specific role, a role that requires elite endurance. JVR is two years in, his endurance is not at TMac's level. In fact, even with 10 pre seasons under his belt he probably won't have TMac's endurance, which is at the top level of AFL players league wide. Very few players his size can cover the same KMs he covers in a game.
It's also why someone like ANB, who isn't the most polished perfect footballer going around, is a best 18 player for us. The ground he covers at top speed is elite and nobody on our list can play that role because nobody has the aerobic capacity to do so.

Our entire forward set up fell apart like a cheap suit when TMac got injured last year. Not because he is the greatest marking and goal kicking forward going around, but because he is a very disciplined role player who rarely loses an aerial contest and can get to contest after contest. While I thought he was just ok on Saturday night, what he did is allow Ben Brown and Gawn to play deeper while he was able to neutralise the aerial contests on the wing. He also does some forward rucking, and he gives us the ability to cover a tall defender if one goes down mid game.

These are things that will take JVR a long time to perfect, no matter how good a player he can be at AFL level.
I think he will get games this year, as he should, and I think he has the potential to be the next Tmac (and hopefully better), but we are not a club that has to play the messiah card anymore. We have lots of good players, which means any youngsters coming through can come in with no pressure and just slowly learn their craft as needed.

If our forward line is so dependent on a super-fit T Mac then we are in serious trouble and we have failed to train for a suitable replacement

We shouldn't be so dependent and have effective alternatives to him or an alternative forward plan

So what I’m hearing is that JVR can’t run or kick……😜

I think we have the backup this year. I think it’s a given that neither TMac or Brown will play every game. Wouldn’t it be nice to win back to back flags with JVR ripping it to shreds.

I agree with this. I even think the Weed would have done ok with the new system for season 23. So i could see JVR coming in and holding his own as well.

Would prefer to keep TM out there though.

Agreed I have the same feeling I did in 2021 after we ran over the Dogs and Lions in successive weeks. Last year was more hope than belief, albeit hope infused with the belief from 2021 but the team look unbelievable this year. A long way to go but I'll be shattered if we let it slip this year.

Maybe. Depends if @AzzKikA gets a life and stops attending games or not…

Agreed, this year we truly seem unbelievable.  Like we've somehow surpassed our 2021 selves.  I'm trying to be cool about it... It would truly feel like a failure if we didn't at least get to the GF this year.

Yep, and a Dees verses Pies Grand Final would be just perfect.

Winning or losing a flag against Collingwood are the ultimate footy extremes for me. Wouldn’t get any higher or lower than that.

21’ Grand Final was excruciating waiting all day for it, but I don’t hate the dogs like I hate Collingwood. The tension of a dees/pies Granny would be a lot.

I don't think I'd ever emotionally recover from losing to the Pies in the Granny with this team!

Salem and Fritta might be fit but because of the long lay off they might need to get match fit either through more match sim at training or game time at Casey.  Hopefully Goodwin is in an info giving mood at the mid week presser.  Or the weekly injury video from Dr Laura(?).

We certainly do not need misinformation. Bending the truth causes recurrences, so suspect information must not be tolerated.

I agree. I'd reckon the Melk would be an excellent choice for the strategic 'Super-sub' based on his skills, adaptability and impacts (when needed most).

Yup. I think it would fundamentally change me as a person. Have to quit my job, move to India for 6 months, go on a spiritual journey to find meaning in life again haha

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
