We'll get compo, he's now classified as an UFA due to being delisted previously.

Can't imagine it will be anymore than a 3rd rounder.

Having said that, I do wonder if there's compensation if saints offer him a base contract of like 2yrs x 100k. That may not trigger compensation.

i think i heard or read somewhere we offered him 4yrs probably at somewhere near 350-4 which is afl average so you'd assume he'd be getting similar elsewhere. saints also have plenty of money to burn particularly with clark, gresham, zjones all at the end of deals and billings/howard potentially getting the boot too.

u also need to pay up to get FA out of clubs so i'd imagine he'd be closer to 450-5 which is similar to what we had harmes on and tommo too for sort of 10-20th players on the list as they were at the time of deal, jordon would be similar at saints, would expect to be in the 22 each week at least for the first season or two

JJ might be the first previously delisted free agent to move for a decent salary (he has value, it won’t be a nothing deal).

latest I read on compo value. Given he’s 22 and free I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets top 50%. In fact we should offer him a 50% contract and hope whoever beats it gives him enough to get 2nd round compo:

The bands are as follows:

- Top five per cent = first-round pick

- Top 15 per cent = end-of-first-round pick

- Top 30 per cent = second-round pick

- Top 50 per cent = end-of-second-round pick

We don't need 47 Curnows, just needed to select the one that was available to us at pick 9 a few years ago.

Amazing Poita, supporters like you would have run out of patience with Curnow after all his injuries over the 5 years and insisted on a trade about year 3, or a delisting even maybe! You are not famous with patience for recruits.

Some D/Lers were calling for Trac to be traded about that time at end of 2019 and luckily he became a star from that first practice match at Casey in 2020 and the rest is history.

IF Gus retires and Harmes leaves, I wonder if JJ would stay, even for a year to test the situation.

Swell he has his chance instead of Laurie I presume who I would still like as sub. He has some rare skill to be unflustered in a phone box where as others on our forward or mid range list are chlostryfobic in a paddock. Spargs is a chance to amend this a bit however.

LOL, when does Harmes ever not come up in the "has received interest from...." conversation?

This would be at least the 3rd or 4th season straight.

Is it legit this time, or are these just more unimaginative rumours from people who do nothing more than cast their eye over "ok" players who arent getting a game at the time?

If it's true then good luck to him. He has been good for us, but I think he's fringe at best now and could do with more opportunity elsewhere if he can get it.

No player wants to finish off playing VFL, Woey Jnr is ahead of Harmes now, so he is looking.  The dees though would want him just in case so won't give him away for nothing, he is more valuable on our list than a third round pick.

If Harmes, Jordon and Dunstan all leave we'll have close to no midfield depth.

Perhaps it will be a focus at the draft but surely we will look to bring in a mature mid like we did with Dunstan.

Saints may want to trade for him so as not to dilute Gresham compo.

That's a fair point, as it stands they have 13, 32 and 51. Will need to trade for Henry as well. It will most likely be 51 at this stage.

Port are linked to 2 defenders at the moment, looking at there current draft picks cupboard is pretty bare, which means future picks.  If they get it wrong with Tassie coming in the cliff will be extra high to climb back up

Bulldogs ruckman Sweet has officially requested a trade to Port.

Ratugolea, Zerk-Thatcher and Sweet all to Port and no 2023 first rounder, going to be a challenge. I wonder if as rumoured we are interested in Xavier Duursma that we could shake him loose to provide Port with trade collateral - OOC end of 2024.

None of those players are worth more than a 3rd rounder

If Sweet is off to Port then Grundy is more likely to Sydney you'd think.

The great thing about Grundy to Sydney, is that I noticed some of their fans last week saying they are happy (or OK) to do it for pick 11. They think he's the missing piece that they've not been able to get right for the last 5-10 years, which would've taken them all the way. And after academy it will be 15 or so and somewhere approaching his value. Paraphrasing: "Its overs but [censored] it just get it done, we can't go into next year with Ladhams" etc

I think at least Ratugolea is worth a 2nd rounder.  Agree Sweet is not going to be an expensive trade.  Port currently have 37, 43, 72 and 90 and they do have to make some picks.  That set is not going to get it done.  Yes, they can use their 2024 first to get some collateral.

Rata couldn’t keep his spot at the cats this year and he spends half the year injured every year.
He is a “potential” player and has been his whole career. I wouldn’t give up a 2nd for him, late 3rd at best.

I know he's off the boil this year - but a few years ago Gresham was one of the best in the comp.  Has he been carrying an injury?  Does the game style not suit?  Why isn't he a possible option to fix our broken forward line - he used to be classy? (from someone who's barely watched the saints this year)

I think a good strategy is to go after players that show promise but are behind in the pecking order at their current club so unable to get a run at it.  A good example of this is Bedford who although he got a decent go last year, you get the feeling he wasn't trusted by the coaches (which to be fair I thought his disposal was too hit and miss) - but what a year he has had!  Hopefully McAdam might be another!

If we're looking for a forward / ruck, why not go for Fullarton?  At brisbane he's behind Daniher and Hipwood and Big O is in the ruck.  He's 200cm, 24 years old and shown he has talent.

Happy to do a swap for Dougal Howard, that seems like a deal that benefits both parties and keeps their compensation in tact.

another experienced Key back allows Petty to stay forward and in my view is an upgrade on Tommlinson

I've never minded Dougal Howard too much, but never watched him closely. My Saints mates think he's a deadset liability. Haha.

    TRAINING: Monday 16th December 2024

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
