Surprised Freo lost to an injury ravaged Saints on the weekend, but not surprised they played poorly.

I predicted in the offseason that they'd slide and miss finals this year as a result of the players they lost. Guys like Logue and Lobb are no world beaters, but they filled key posts in their structure and played their roles. With Lobb gone, they have no other tall forward who kicked more than 10 goals last season. Their poorly performing forward now is now somehow worse. They're reliant on a broken down Fyfe and Jackson as key forwards this season. Their forward line is a recipe for disaster. They'll struggle to score most weeks this season.

Let's enjoy the high picks we got for Jackson. He won't be improving their team at all in the short term!

Darcy also looks heavy and bulky but not in a muscular sense.

I thought the same thing.

At the Saints praccy match i was on the boundary right near where the dees players came on and off. And up close Max and Grundy looked incedibly fit. Even with their jumpers on you could see how little fat they were carrying.

Not wanting to fat shame or anything, but Darcy and Jackson looked barely comparable.

Given the amount of running the role demands that is a big issue for freo.

As we know if a player starts the season in non optimal shape there is basically no way of ever reaching optimal condition in that season - unless they do something dramatic lie they did with Weed and BB and do a mid season 4-6 week re boot camp (which involves not playing senior footy).

I didn't get to see this game but it looks to me like Freo's defence was just playing kick-to-kick on their own while Ross Lyon had St Kilda doing the the Ross Lyon thing clogging up the options further up the ground.

image.png.7210f63bcf2f0dd61ff4addc2ef7c52f.png

Those four players shared 2000 meters gained at 90% disposal efficiency.

I'm not much of a fan of Ross Lyon as a character but he is a master at knowing what opposition activity to not care about.

Alas, Saints might have to be taken pretty seriously once they have a few players back, particularly King for the second half of the season.

That they are both bulky is what makes me think that is how Freo want them.  But that build is of an old fashioned style ruckman.  Today's ruckman are much leaner, faster and more agile.  I can't think of many other ruckmen today, with that build/bulk.

I was pretty confident Freo would be found out this year for the lack of cohesion/synergy from their list and position changes.  Reckon I can add lumbering ruckmen to their vulnerabilities.

Looking at how LJ presented himself for his first game in his new colours, I reckon he might be hoping that the Fremantle Doctor specializes in diet control.

I didn’t see the game and he isn’t in any highlights. Is he looking heavy and unfit?

You would expect a response form Freo against North but i won't be surprised if they lose. There are big problems are there. no forward line and a game plan not fit for purpose. We'll know more post the North game but another loss and I can see a Melbourne 2019 season unfolding for them.

I genuinely fear how these two will be able to keep up with Gawn and Grundy 😳

Darcy is genuinely carrying a spare tyre around his waist, Gawn will absolutely run him ragged. Jackson looks to have put on a bit more muscle but also looks more doughy than before. I'd be a bit concerned if I were a Freo fan.

So this is what Fremantle meant when they said he looked like having a Goodyear.

I don't think we need to death ride Fremantle. they've just let too many players walk out the door, upset their chemistry and i've heard a lot of people over there aren't stoked that LJ is one of their highest paid players given how inconsistent he will be for the next 2-3 years at least.

This is Peter Bell trying to stroke his Ego but it's IMO upset a club that was otherwise building nicely

If North win this weekend, any semblance of dignity will fast slip away as I chortle at the thought of winning a flag and having a first round top 10 draft pick in the same year.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
