Anyone know the current situation with these two?

Currently uncontracted but yet there is no news on whether they have re-signed or not?

I thought the cut off date was last week but yet there are clubs still delisting players today.

My understanding is they both got a 1 year contract.

Might be wrong...

Has this been publicly announced?

Pretty sure Tim Lamb confirmed in a radio interview during the trade period that both players would be at the club in 2023.

Don't recall any official announcements as yet though.

14. Michael Hibberd. Age: 32 | Games: 185 | Status: Out of contract

The veteran defender is one of two remaining Demons out of contract at the end of this year, but is expected to sign an extension for next season. Hibberd played 12 senior matches in 2022, missing the first half of the season with a calf issue.

18. Jake Melksham. Age: 31 | Games: 208 | Status: Out of contract

The veteran forward was restricted to 11 senior games in 2022, but played the Demons’ last eight games of the season, including two finals. Also kicked four goals in Casey’s VFL flag win. Found himself in the headlines mid-year when he had to have surgery on his hand after his off-field altercation with Steven May. Out of contract but expected to sign an extension for next season.

I asked the question on the Changes thread and nobody could give a definitive answer.

Someone wrote that today is the day on which the 2022 playing contracts are supposed to expire so I guess we’ll know soon enough.

Well the next significant date on the calendar is -

Thursday 03 November at 9.00am

AFL Delisted Player Free Agency Period (1) commences

If Hibberd and Melksham aren’t contracted by Thursday then you would assume that they’re delisted players, wouldn’t you?

I couldn’t imagine either of them wanting to go elsewhere at this stage of their careers. I don’t think another club would offer either of them big bucks or guarantee games - surely not?

Seems not reading the above.

Be very  nice to have their progeny thanks very much, and both seem like smart articulate give it everything players.

i read somewhere recently on afl.com (can't remember exactly where) that wednesday is the cut-off date for contracts and father-son nominations, so this fits in with redleg saying thursday is start of delisted free-agency period

Surely Hibberd to impart learnings on Rivers and Bowey and others.

Melksham I’m not too fussed about but when injury hits he seems to be Goodwins ‘go-to-man.’

I suspect part of the delay is that either or both could be redrafted as rookies rather than the main list if we need spots.

Say we trade 13 for a pair of picks in the 20’s and then take Finn Emile whatever his name is after pick 40 we’ve suddenly used 4 list spots and would need the veterans on the rookie list.

The rules slightly changed on this if I remember correctly. If delisted, they can’t automatically be picked back up by us as rookies. They have to go through the rookie draft.

If we did that, no other team would interfere.

Yes happy for both to go around again in 2023.  They should get 1-year deals and see out their careers in red and blue.  Will remember Hibbo’s dash after the 2021 GF (such emotion) and Melksham’s goal v Hawks in 2018 finals to seal the finals victory.

I don't follow the rules on this but always amused when seasoned players get rookied. Hibbo never gives in and I have always liked that, Melk is just mercurial. Both still have a place at the club.

I thought contracts could be done right up to final list declarations.

Not to mention Hibberd played pretty well later in the season.

Michael Hibberd has played 101 games for the Demons (84 games at the Bombers).

Whereas, Jake Melksham has played 94 games for the Demons (114 games at the Bombers). Let's hope Jake gets the remaining 6 AFL games for the Demons to get to 100 games.

I am always thinking of possible Father-Son (or Father-Daughter) opportunities for the Demons and I know the rule is 100 games for an AFL Club.

Fingers crossed both of them get a 1 year contract extension for season 2023.

I guess we shall find out if this happens in the next day or so?

The 6 games investment maybe paid 10 fold if we have a father son/daughter nomination down the track.

Veterans Hibberd and Melksham will go around again and could be re-signed as soon as this week. The 2021 premiers will use two selections at the national draft but upgrade Kade Chandler, who will have more opportunity with Bedford’s departure, to meet the AFL minimum of three picks. That will leave three rookie vacancies, although the Demons may leave a spot for a pre-season or mid-season draft recruit. Their second category B rookie, on top of Andy Moniz-Wakefield, is fresh signing Kyah Farris-White.

With a 5 man bench and/or med supp, we should be able to get Jake to 100 if Goodwin has that aim and early in the season.

Does Jake or Michael have any children?

Yes. Pig has a daughter and Melksham has 2 or 3 kids (not sure what)

Answering my own question in relation to Jake. He has 2 sons and a daughter.

  • AFLW REPORT: Gold Coast

The forecast said wind. The ladder said mismatch. The scoreboard said obliteration. Melbourne didn’t just beat Gold Coast — they dismantled them: 13.15 (93) to 0.6 (6). An 87-point obliteration, the Suns held goalless, and the Demons delivering their second-highest winning margin and third-highest score in AFLW history.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #28 Will Verrall

It was a tough ask for him to break through as a 199cm ruckman in the shadow of an all-time great in that position who is also the club captain. He had some good days at Casey but was unable to progress and was delisted at the end of the season.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #29 Tom Campbell

The 33-year-old Campbell has yet to play AFL football for Melbourne, but his Casey form has been strong and he has been retained as a ready-made ruck depth option who is widely regarded as someone who is excellent for the culture of the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #30 Harry Sharp

The Demons acquired an interesting player in Sharp, who narrowly missed securing a spot in the Lions’ premiership team last year. The 22-year-old medium forward played in the opening round this season and ended up with 18 senior games, although he was substituted in or out in for ten of those matches. He demonstrated glimpses of form, but ultimately ended the year on the margins of the team.

Worked his way back after a slow start and a further slump in form going into the midseason but became a solid contributor for the club in the latter half of 2025. Closing in on 300 goals for the club.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Gold Coast

On Friday, the Demons return to our Casey Fields fortress where they have a 77% win rate. The scent of September is in the air and the struggling Suns are on the horizon. The Cranbourne weather forecast? Ominous, like the match itself: a strong chance of carnage. Let’s be honest, last week’s first half against the West Coast was a training drill but we dropped our guard in the final quarter. While this match is a mismatch on paper — second versus seventeenth — football is won in the wind, the contests, and the moments.
