That covers it DC. The AFL is addicted to money they will do anything that increases their coffers.

The betting agencies of course will be in seventh heaven. One more opportunity to exploit problem gamblers (of course, gamble responsibly)!

Sadly very accurate mono.

  • Demonland changed the title to Extra "MAGIC" Round in 2023?

Great! That will guarantee attendances will be non existent at 7 other games. Or if Port play Adelaide....at 8 other games!

And my MFCSS says it will be a "Home" game for us

No way they can play the showdown on that weekend. Port and Adelaide surely have to be playing interstate teams. Make them play Collingwood and Carlton on those weeks.

Can we play our Kardinia Park game against the Cats that weekend?

They won't waste a showdown for Magic round. 6 of those games are slated for Adelaide Oval.

The other 3 game will involve GWS, GC, Norf, etc, 1 will be at Norwood Oval, 1 in the Barossa Valley and the other is still not known, maybe south of the city Noarlunga Oval or regional SA (Riverland, McClaren Vale etc.

I wouldn't mind heading to Adeliade for the weekend except the prices for everything will be through the roof

And in terms of location wouldn't it be better to select a host city in a state you're trying to grow the game. Or Sydney or Brisbane to stick it to the NRL. I suppose the main reason Adelaide was chosen is because they offered the most money to host

Yes, hard to have Adelaide and magic in the same sentence.

Tragic works though.

Is the old Football Park still in existence?

You mean they are actually going ahead with this garbage?

🤮 and what is the term "magic" all about?  Trying to sell it to pre-schoolers??

Whenever changes are mooted for the rules of the game, there are plenty of posters critical of the proposals. I'm generally less fussed. However, I'm much more concerned about tinkering with the fundamental structure of the game. There is no need for a "magic" round or a 23rd game per season for each team.

Furthermore, if the AFL wants to see how not to run a professional sport, watch what cricket has done. By ignoring the "less is more" concept (more appropriately called "scarcity" in economic terms), cricket has devalued its product to the extent that the TV networks seem to have minimal interest in the broadcast rights any more, other than for Australia v England Test Matches. The AFL runs the risk of losing its audience if it changes the competition without good reason. (A good reason would be the introduction of a Tasmanian team, for example).

Are all the matches being played at Adelaide Oval? We'll most likely have to play our home game against the Eagles at some suburban ground.

I assumed they were doing it like the Hong Kong sevens.

We have room if anyone needs to a place for the weekend.

But some of our SANFL grounds would not be up to AFL standard; I would not be surprised if there are some games scheduled in Port Lincoln or Mount Gambier.

The magic round is effectively replacing a week of practice matches that would've been shown only on KAYO with C grade commentators.

I'm sure most football fans will come around to the idea.

I don't think it matters if it's a home or away game for us.

We'll still have our 11 home games (10 at the G/ 1 in NT) and all clubs will get an equal distribution in the magic round regardless of home or away team.

It's called that because most footy fans' response, upon hearing about the concept, is to mutter the magic word (and I'm not referring to "abracadabra" either).

Pretty sure channel 7 and Foxtel would've loved the idea when the AFL told them about an extra round of games just prior to signing off on the new tv rights a couple of months back.

It's a neutral round, so club's still get 11 home, 11 away games plus 1 neutral game

Oh except for Adelaide and Port who now get 12 home games 🤪

I’m assuming we share $500,000 and not each receive $500,000 as this poorly worded tweet suggests.

It's $500k each

Originally they mentioned $1M per club

Used to head for Adelaide a lot for work. During the annual Test Match accommodation was hard to find and very expensive. No reason to think this would be different

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
