May and Spargo stand out in this way - they are too hot headed and need some brain training in staying calm in the present moment. The feeling of negativity seems to seep into everyone, and this is 100% on the coach.

Also, in the first quarter, there were several switches and passages of creative ball movement that completely outsmarted the Lions.

Why did that approach completely dry up? Are they not backing themselves in?

Trac can hold his head up high - that double play in the centre where he set up a goal was inspirational, and Petty showed outstanding footy smarts and composure.

On the other hand, guys like Rivers and Sparrow are completely lacking in that composure. Particularly for Sparrow, being a young premiership player and enjoying a long apprenticeship under some of the best, he just doesn't seem to be progressing (despite elite pressuring ability).

I think people here have been hard on BBB - he's being badly misused. The guy is not Hawkins/Cameron/King so why are we expecting him to pull miracles?

Also ANB - he's no Toby Greene or Papley, but continues to present in his role. Against Sydney he got tagged by Clarke and copped a ridiculous level of pressure, and in this game he did what was required. But to be truly effective he needs a more creative type - eg. Rayner, Heeney, Wingard to play off of.

Pickett needs to do his homework on positioning - watch videos of Cameron (when in form), Stengle, Walters.

Its so disappointing to win only 3 of our last 9 games at the G this year...after all that happened in 2021.

Oliver is a next level player. He wants it so badly. 
I feel like the rest of the list was very complacent. We lost that fire and the desire and we were not ruthless enough. How many times this season have we lost while 20+ points up? 2021 Melbourne would never ever allow that. 
 

We seemed to think Bang Bang Bang will just happen again and save us. That we can play 10 good minutes of football a game and win.

The DARE has been deliberately coached out of the side. It is forbidden, not part of our game plan. The side has been drilled to relentlessly play the defensive percentages, kick down the line for Max to mark or knock it out and set up for the throw in and repeat. Kick long to the fwd pocket basically to get an out of bounds again, then hope for a goal from the throw in. It mostly works but not against the best sides who read what we are doing and start to congregate around where they know the ball is going then intercept and run and take risks to get the ball forward quickly with low passes into their fwd 50. 

One interpretation of holding the ball for Brisbane, a completely different one for us. 

Even at 10-0 we weren't playing great footy, most of those wins were an arm wrestle for 3 quarters and we dominated 1.

Our game plan , our run n carry that was some of the best footy ever seen last year was non existent and to me it is clearly fitness, we simply could not run games out like last year and execute our game plan. 

At least 6 blokes out there were on 1 leg tonight. Lever, Brown, Trac, Salem, Gawn, Viney . You can't carry that many sore players and expect to win.

Blessing in disguise, we'd have got pantsed and embarrassed against Geelong.

Unfortunately this will hurt our momentum going into next year.

We rode the wave of the grand final coming into this year with our start, we won't have that next year and we'll be fighting to contend up the top...

We only have a 3-4 year window with this group and blown 1 already. Trac, Gus, Langdon, Lever all 27 next year.. God help we change up the way we play. The game has shifted to a more pressure and fast ball movement type of style and our style just can't compete.

We've just regressed back to the laughing stock of the comp with these finals performances.

This is 100% on the coaching staff. They've absolutely butchered our season by their inability to have a plan B in place and also being too conservative at the selection table.

We have some really really dumb decision makers also. Not going to name them, as it doesn’t achieve anything. Is another factor on the coaches though, to understand player capabilities and try and get the most out of them.

That statistic - 3 wins of 9 at the MCG - is shocking. Just shocking. I can't understand why Goodwin hasn't been confronted with it.  The press has gone very easy on his palpable failures in the second half of the season. I find his pressers soul-destroying. Banal. Boring. Bit like the way the team has been playing.

If you can only be happy if we win the thing then you will never be happy.

The team need to figure out what went wrong because the idea everything would sort it self out never felt realistic.

Van Rooyen could have done no worse this final series then what Brown and Melksham put up, so that's somewhere to start.

Massive risk of becoming a team like the dogs post their 2016 flag unfortunately

Shoot out games and leaky defence but bloody hell we could be unpredictable and pile on huge scores.

Lived in Melbourne that year and it was some of the more enjoyable games I've been to in years.

We were always fast out of the box, but we couldn't handle being front runners. From early season dominance, to so many of our games leading at half time. What happens to their heads, do they start believing they have done enough or that they are just the better team, drink the bathwater, it's all they need. Wow, the other coaches would know we drop off in the second half, and give up the momentum and belief. 

Petty moves forward 10 minutes into the end of our season, even though we have had trouble all year. Looks like he can play there.

We lacked desperation, everyone could see the swing at the start of the third, and effectively we had or did nothing. It happened many times in the season and we developed no strategies to turn it. When the other team brings the heat we have to at least match it and then bring more. We let them out tackle us

Missing goals, trying to do it by themselves, getting in each others way, and panicking with the ball. Brisbane were nervous at the start, we became nervous as the game developed. We looked like an inexperienced finals team.

Too many were in and out of the game.   

When the opposition go fast against us we drop our bundle.

Bad forward craft, the mids started to to miss their short handballs, and several brain fades.

Surprised and disappointed, bad way to finish such a promising year, leading again and allowing them to overrun us.

 

I'd be interested to know what are handball receives after a mark % was this season.  Did not seem to be any intent to move the ball quickly, have run from behind or change angles from kicking in our back half all season.

And why would a premiership team be happy to bomb it long to a pocket? Where's the arrogance?

Doesn't make any sense at all ... doing that (bombing long to a pocket) invites the opposition in.  Stupid football and a soft, conservative, boring game plan.  Giving the opposition a chance

You never give a sucker an even break.  Never do what the opposition might want

Make no mistake, we blew our chances tonight.  We lost a game we should have won

Genuinely nearly lost my mind with some of the inside 50 kicking decisions in the 2nd half. They will haunt me for months.

Firstly I have to say sorry the powers that be never want me to see a premiership live. Thank god for covid our only way to win a flag is outside the MCG we never would have won a premiership otherwise. You can bring in Grundy or even superman and it won't make a difference we won't win a premiership while I'm alive and I've got another 30 to 40 years to live. The dynasty is over.

 

Secondly we've been found out under pressure again and it's happened a lot during the last half of the season we just bomb it to either Gawn or Ben Brown and hope that we crumb it. The pressure by the opposition is too great for us to get away with it. The game plan does not work anymore get it into your thick skull Goody.

 

Thirdly not to play a CHF in this game was a big mistake Gawn and Ben Brown can't do it all either McDonald or van Rooyen should have played. We must be the only team to not play a CHF. I hope van Rooyen and McDonald kill it for Casey to show what a stupid move it was to play neither.

 

Fourthly too many players playing on their premiership reputation, namely Sparrow, Spargo, Salem and Rivers, time to seriously look at them. Fancy Gawn putting in a shocker against a no name ruckman and Berry playing out his skin. Melksham's last half of the year has been good but it's time for him to hang up the boots and bring fresh blood in. 

Forward line needs a complete revamp, structure , tactics, and personal, the amount of times promising forward forays come to nothing does my head in. We have enough of the ball to win games but can't score. And what's with our second halves, you could tell at half time we were going to struggle. FMD
