layzie 34,528 Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 With a bit of luck JVR will arrive in a TVR
fr_ap 2,566 Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 As much as I want to see it, if they bring JVR in it's pretty poor form IMO. The kid has been in great form for a long time and Melk has had down weeks before. We've played one key forward for half the year and it's only ever really looked potent against Brisbane. I think that is for a reason. If we blink and pick him, I think it tells you how the FD are feeling - not confident. Some would say making a structural change with the season on the line is bold. I think it is risky and/or negligent after a season of chances to try has passed us by 4
Roost it far 10,163 Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 (edited) Is JVR actually any good or is he just demonlands wet dream? As for Chandler, just no. Bowey I’d fit in but not sure who comes out Edited September 7, 2022 by Roost it far

Harbinger43 125 Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Almost certain that there will be no changes. Only change will be if Spargo doesn’t get up or if there is a Bowey in /Salem out change - but that last part won’t happen 2
Older demon 2,828 Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 For those interested in history and coincidence and debuts in finals.. In 1982, 40 years ago on September 11th in the 2nd week of the finals, Hawthorn debuted a young forward named Dermott Brereton who kicked 5 goals on debut against North, leading the Hawks to victory. There is certain synchronicity if JVR debuts on Friday night. Sadly the tale didn't end well. Hawthorn had been defeated by Carlton in the first week of the final and after defeating North were again beaten by the blues in the prelim. Carlton going then went on to beat the favourites, Richmond, in the grand final. Augurs well for the Swans doesn't it? The 82 final is remembered for Malthouse having a dislocated shoulder but passing all tests at the final training until coach Francis Burke caught him unawares as training finished and dislocated his shoulder again. Also notable that Brian Taylor was left out of the grand final team with a sore knee

Bowey I’d fit in but not sure who comes out He's shown some glimpses of being very good at VFL level Roost. In the end it would come down to quality of delivery plus JVR making the most of his chances. Macca must be very close though and if somewhere around 90% match fit he would probably get the nod. His experience would be invaluable if he is ready and would make for another tricky match up conundrum for the Bears.

The only reason JVR hasn't played a game is that were playing finals and Melksham has done his job. JVR will get plenty of game time next year.
redandbluemakepurple 377 Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 IN: Bowey - would have been cooler and more precise under last quarter pressure. Dunstan - got a ton of ball in the last VFL game and acceptable disposal; better than earlier in the year. Mitch Brown - poor stats in the senior team earlier in the year but knows his trade. If always on the move near the goals, the opposing backs will knock the ball to ground bringing the smalls into play. JVR is taking his high marks 3rd or 4th up and is too small at the moment to cause general mayhem. LJ and Gawn were dropping marks, Weidemann-wise. OUT: Melksham - Too easy for the McCartin boys and poor disposal ANB , Rivers - gotta drop someone LUCKY SURVIVORS: LJ - needed to ruck while they refuse to run BBrown Hibberd - needed for Charlie Cameron Brayshaw/Petracca - rubbish disposal but can do better Pickett - did little but will have opportunities with the presence of MBrown bringing the ball pinging around. Otherwise we need a role that uses his strengths; possibly out on the wing where he can literally literally run rings around two opponents. Salem - down on metres gained but OK for first game back. Still tidy disposal. 1

Travy14 2,142 Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 In 2018 and 21 year old Sam Weideman came into the Melb side to replace Hogan and kicked 3 v hawks and 2 v Geel. If JVR comes in this week maybe it could be a repeat? pure optimism, i can't see him coming in but who knows.

Having said that he shouldv'e been given at least a small block of matches earlier around the North match to see where he's at in that development. Might have surprised on the up side, who knows. Regardless would have been great for his development also. Same with Chandler and Bedford's look was too choppy. Needed a decent block of games around that time as well. Nothing worse than bringing young blokes in and chopping them a week or two later IMV. As for JVR playing next year, well that's stating the obvious.

Salem's form / intensity / lack of run was a mile off anything that resembled AFL levels last week.... let alone manic finals football. Rocket up Kozzy, Spargo. Their efforts (at times) when we didnt have the ball was atrocious. Then there was Melk's & Gus's horribilis. Competely MIA. BB, LJ, Lever & Viney...pretty ordinary on the night. Most teams can cover a player or two having off games. Not uncommon, even in a final. Can they cover six/seven etc. Highly unlikely, even in a regular H&A IMV unless.you're playing a lowly ranked team which of course doesn't happen in finals. Team efforts win finals and we left too little to way too few last week. How we even got within three goals of the Swans is a tribute to the few who stepped up big time and some others behind those who played either very solid or serviceable games. She upset poor old Bruce Doull but it didn’t hamper the Blues at all.

"Speaking to Melbourne today, they think (Jacob) van Rooyen is absolutely in the mix for a September debut." Keep in mind that AFL clubs all lie about selection prospects, injuries, etc. Nevertheless, allowing speculation around selections can be a strategy to distract the opposition. It could also be a tactic to see how the player in question copes.
JimmyGadson 3,455 Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Tom McDonald has always taken several games at AFL level to find his groove after a lay-off. He takes longer than most to find his touch, the evidence of that is there and his first game back at VFL level he looked extremely rusty. Not only that, he pulled up sore. So playing this weekend would be a potential disaster decision for the club imo. Van Rooyen on the other hand.. He's had a consistent block of form, he's super competitive so getting involved at ground level is not an issue. He has Max and Ben Brown to take Andrews and Payne so he'll get third best defender or maybe even fourth if Fritsch is playing. He will bring enormous energy and excitement to the players and to the fans. It's possible he'd drag more through the gate. I just think it's a no brainer. The obstacle is Goodwin and how conservative he is. But it's clear in my mind that if we want to win it this year, we need to throw some curve-balls at the opposition. 5 1

Such as fitness, ability to pressure. He has played some good footy for Casey but also had plenty of games where he was poor. Let the kid develop. We shouldn't rush him just coz it might excite the fans or brig more people to the game. We should play the best, fittest team that gives us the best chance of winning. Goody is clearly not afraid to play first year kids in big games such as Bowey, Kozzi, LJ, Rivers etc. Are you suggesting our footy department know more about the game and the intricacies of each player than Demonland? Wash your mouth out🇮🇪🤣🤣🤣 1

Glad we have matured past that… 1
