The Demons, having finished second on the ladder, suddenly find themselves facing elimination. I'm reading and hearing this everywhere today. All six teams are now facing elimination in their next game. 

Anyway some more about our injured players in this story.

    Nibbler has to be under pressure. His current role appears  to be absorbing tackles inside 50 which is a tad niche. Bedford in for mine. Speed and more likely to score.

    Hunt and Rivers need to provide more run out of defence. Salem needs to lift and start making kicks that open the game up.

    Presume Tommy Mac in to support Brown who moves at time like in need of a zimmer frame. Didnt look 100 percent for Casey but should come in for Melksham. JVO should have been given a regular season debut in case needed in finals.

    Would still like more speed of ball movement. Bowey can hit targets that open game up. Smith super quick and versatile. Maybe for Sparrow.

     

     

     

    Definitely agree re moving the ball quicker especially once we get forward of centre. Why wouldn't you try and get the ball to Fritsch one out he's good in the air and on the ground and our leading goal kicker by a fair margin. Got to be better than kicking it to the pocket ad nauseum. Not so sure about Bedford , played well in a game we won easily but in tougher games was hardly sighted, don't think he'll handle the pressure.

    You don't think winning the ultimate after a 57 year drought has some genuis to it IRW?

    There's always room for improvement but he's also done a stirling job in following up with a 2nd spot and the double chance this season IMV.  Albeit we would really need to make a Prelim for that to mean anything.

    Having said that i would like to have seen a bit more 'daring' in terms of tweaking the game style away from the usual, managing some of the older and/or banged up fellas during and around the Norf match and, lastly, giving a few more chances to those who appeared to be likely types (and have earned a stint) at Casey.

    No point limping over the line this week just to loose the week. That been the case we should be setting ourselves up for the prelim at this weeks expense.
     

    Rest Trac and bring in Dunstan this is what he was here for.

    Additionally time to drop Anb and Melk and bring in Bedford and Vanrooyen and give ourself the chance to kick a score. For whatever defensive pressure ANB might debatably have over Bedford he’s not hurting the scoreboard and I’d argue he’s costs us goals when he has the ball. As for Melksham he had a great game a few weeks back but it’s simply not working with only 1 tall.
     

    We need to risk failure if we want greatness.

    Answers to above question:  Lever played down fitness concerns over Charlie Spargo, who spent Friday night in hospital after a hit to the throat, and Bayley Fritsch, who played through a knee issue.  Both players were only walking laps on Monday morning, with Fritsch's left knee strapped.

    Other fitness news:

    • Lever was on a modified program and trained inside instead of with the main group, but Melbourne officials said he would be fit to face Brisbane.
    • Petracca completed a light session with his teammates at Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning, albeit with a slight limp and with tape around his right calf.  Lever:  "I think he'll have a bit of a lighter week. But he'd have to tick off a fair few things".
    • The defender was confident forward Tom McDonald could make an impact if called on, despite having just one VFL game to his name after a long-term foot injury.
    • Melksham also had a knee issue.

    Add those to BB and Jackson's bandaged knees, Oliver's thumb and Max looking so so we seem to be a team of the 'walking wounded'.

    Everything went right last year. History is not repeating itself, and sadly neither are the results it seems.

    We are hobbling to the finish line.

    I'm confident we will make the GF. 

    But will not be disappointed if we bow out from the PF.

    If Fritta does not come up, JVR may come in anyway.

    Could be his best opportunity, although the club would have to seriously consider T-Mac for experience in the circumstances

     

    Tried to get to the training this morning (Monday). 

    Went past at 9.30 am.

    Must have been an 11.30 start.

    I hear what you are saying but the priority has to be winning this week. Anything can happen in a prelim.

    While preparing the 'What They Are Saying...' thread, I noticed some chat about McStay being a bit worse for wear after playing in the ruck for the Tigers game.

    I want a lot more of your confidence LH, I think we're still a great side but there's some things working against us.

    Well you may have misunderstood me because you more less said what I and many others gave been saying here and elsewhere for weeks/ months now.

    A great coach would'nt let a side at 10 zip but not "flying" ,just carry on as if it was all a plan ...8 weeks of " loading" Lol..may have been people on here but not finding a way to blood more depth while  persevering with out of form category 2 players just  isn't great coaching .

    I havnt said he is no good..57 years since I last witnessed a flag tells me he got something right .

    Like many I will consider a Prelim a good pass mark.

    Getting to the G/F will surprise me  and surely we'll  expect some substantial changes next season;not just adjusting to no Jackson.

    Take a look at a courageous Geelong FD crashing through a habitual game plan and team structure and giving themselves yet another chance 

    He's the coach,let's see his moves

    Its taken a long time for the penny to drop at Geelong & make real change, despite their significant advantages affording them plenty of time & easy home games with which to experiment. Hardly courageous.

    Our PF mauling did that to them.

    Prelim being a pass about right, especially given how equal the comp is this year/the fact we have a horrible record against the top 4 and had some forward-line issues at stages this season. 

    That being said, anything can happen in finals footy, need everyone to stand up and we can still cause some damage. 

    Either way 2023 will be exciting - have some time to rectify some forward line issues (fit again TMAC, young JvR debuting, maybe another forward brought in) and we should be ready go give it another shot.

    Now we are in finals we need to be playing with making the grand final in mind by resting players and making changes with that in mind, we should be aiming to win the lot even at the risk of going out in straight sets. No point winning this week if it all but guaranteed we lose to cat because trac is on one leg and we still have a non functioning fwd line. I’m not here to celebrate top 4 finishes and say well done

    Trac is playing, he would have been completely off his feet today if he was in any doubt. He’ll play.

    Melksham won’t be dropped, he’s had one bad game out of the last 5.

    Id love to see Bowey in, but I can’t see who for. The only chance I see is Trac forward, Harmes into the Center to tag and Salem to the wing. ANB makes way and Bowey goes back to HBF.

    I think Dunstan will be sub. Security blanket.

    Demons complaint about Geelongs home ground advantage are clearly not grown up enough to remember when the MCG was Melbourne's home ground.

    It wasn't until Richmond stormed the castle we lost that home ground advantage about 57 years ago.

    A radical change in structure and style is courageous whenever it happens ...but are you suggesting we should wait about 5 or so years  (try 10) as failed contenders before tweaking the approach ?

    I agree dunstan should be either in the team or medical sub in case Trac has issues. I would like to see ANB go out and someone faster more talented come in.  I would also love to see our forward line work together to all lead in different directions so that we have options going forward and that we dont have every man and his dog going up with Fritch and Ben Brown. We are extremely wasteful going into our forward line because we just pump it into pockets time after time, need to use short passes and running players near by to move the ball quickly in to leading forwards.  We have had some injuries but sounds like everyone is still pretty fit, we need to go out and repeat our flogging of Brisbane. hopefully brisbane is getting over confident with all this talk about the Dees injuries.

    I made no such suggestion....we are the reigning premiers. We came 2nd. Lost a QF to a red hot young team who are clicking at the right time and kicked opportunistic goals, aided by 50m penalties. It's hardly the time to throw everything out and make 'courageous change'. 

    If in 3 years we are still kicking to the pocket then sure - make courageous change then. 

    I'm not sure why you're simultaneously lauding Geelong's change whilst in the next sentence deriding that it took them 5-10 years to make it. 

    As for the G once being exclusively ours - completely irrelevant to the here and now. It's well known that Geelong's home ground provides them an advantage over visiting teams. It stands to reason, then, they are better placed to make 'significant change' at home with the knowledge they carry a headstart into every game.

    the biggest change i want to see is brayshaw going back to being a defensive wingman rather than an inside mid

    harmes to go inside and 'run with' neale from the get go; make his life miserable

    i would love to see plugger mac but i'm not expecting it; in fact, i'm fully expecting 'no change'

    Brayshaw went into the midfield partly to enable Petracca to play more forward.  With Petracca on one leg it's unlikely Angus will come out of the midfield rotation.

      The Sir Doug Nicholls Round kicks off in Darwin with a Top 4 clash between the Suns and the Hawks. On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory.       And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

    • CASEY: Footscray

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.
