I think the 'bombing it in to our forward pocket or kicking religiously down the line' to max was when we were playing at our worst. This year I thought we defaulted to those tactics when our mid field was getting beaten and so we would rely on the talls to get it done. Only problem was that they often didn't. Max from the kick out, down the line or in the pocket is no doubt a luxury that often helps us but as a primary go to was, imo, a poor tactic. Our forwards stopped leading, big packs would crunch maxy all day long. Happy to be proven wrong but I certainly wouldn't be drafting to try and make that tactic a mainstay of our game.

It worked in 2021 partly because one of the best fitness boss’ in the world had us trained to the second. We were fittest in the league by a large margin come finals time 2021. Make no mistake, that was a critical ingredient in why we won the flag.

It didn’t work in the second half of this year, and we only came 2nd due to the 10-0 start.

when we are not at an elite level of fitness, carrying injuries or whatever, the plan just doesn’t work.

Can Selwyn replicate Burgess’ success. Time will tell.

Especially after we give them fifteen different sets of complete instructions on how they should be doing it / should have done it.

One of the great things about the Dees list management team is that they are fair and reasonable.  They know what they want and pay fair value which is why they get deals done.
If you hold a team over a barrel then it bites you in the [censored] down the track.

Exactly.

On one hand it’s a salary dump.

On the other hand, we have no back up ruckman and his obviously the best available.

Would be win if we can maintain 2 x 1st rounders for Jackson and trade up our 33 from beford/Hunt compensation for a pick that nets us Grundy.

Trade Bedford & our pick 33 to GWS, for their pick 21. Then give 21 to the Pies, for Grundy. So the trade would be Bedford & 33 for Grundy. Great deal imo

Edited by Matt

People saying we don’t need him & that we hold the upper hand are delusional. We have 0 ruck depth, not even a VFL standard back up & there is no chance of getting a ready made kid from the draft. If Max goes down we will have a VFL plodder like the Weid rucking which would be the worst result possible. Collingwood know we are desperate, we have met him & said we want him, so we have shown our hand. As a few have said giving up a pick in the 20s is nothing if it makes us stronger & we know what we are getting. We cannot afford not to get him, so we won’t be playing hardball in any way at all, it’ll get done reasonably early so we can move on without the bluff & [censored].

Pickett, while this approach could work and we 'win' the trade, such a transactional approach harm our reputation of being reasonable in negotiating trades and is likely to bite us on future trade.

Like others have suggested if we can trade up on of our later picks to an early / mid second rounder through the loss of Hunt and Bedford.  through the Jackson trade we should then have a early first round pick this year and an extra first round next year.

You don't think it could happen?

Not sure of the points value of a climb up from 3rd round into early second round but it is hard to believe Bedford would be worth anywhere near that much.

If GWS get what they're asking for for Hopper, Taranto, and Bruhn they'll have six first round picks.   I think there's a real good chance they trade out pick 21.

Word is the Grundy deal will happen early. With GWS and the Tigers making a deal tomorrow, Im hopeful

A great win if the club can make it happen!

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
