Some interesting names have popped up.

Jason Johannison is reportedly put off contract talks at the end of the year and most likely on the move. Could be a cheap option for some outside speed and class.

Darcy Gardiner is a 26 year old defender who could take Petty's if we're potentially looking at moving him forward going into next year.

Also wouldn't be surprised if we end up shopping James Harmes at the end of the year. Still 3 years to go on his 5 year contract that he signed back in 2019. So whether ths club wants to clear some extra cap space on top of Jackson potentially leaving.

Surely no one is taking Harmes?

I think there'd certainly be a few suitors.

Bunch of clubs would have him. Even if there is a bit of ‘Heffernan, Blumfield, Caracella’ to him - he is a flag winning role player who is tough and kicks goals. Apparently quite coachable, loves the club, and you’d probably want to keep him for the right price…

Jamie Elliot? A free agent so would cost nothing and could be a good addition to our forward line.

Had a real dip at Elliot  4 years ago Would fit into our forward line and can kick!

spends too much time in the sick bay

Balta is 22. The tigers aren’t going to trade a 22 year old for picks unless it’s a crazy offer.

He’s also not an upgrade on LJ in the forward/ruck role. He’s played a big chunk of the year as a forward and hasn’t kicked multiple goals since round 3. Obviously Jacko’s not lighting it up forward either but he makes far more of an impact in the ruck and has his moments as a tall target.

He’s a key defender getting a run as a forward because Grimes, Tarrant, Broad and often Gibcus are down back.

Balta, from what I've seen is not much of a forward.

If I was the Tiges I would swap him with Gibcus who has some forward skills but hopefully they won't figure that one out.

Harmes is a very handy player...I hope we hold him.

He will be missed tomorrow night

Don't have the midfield depth to cover Harmes unless one of Howes or Woewodin explode in the preseason and demand a game

I reckon harmes is pretty popular within the group and worth keeping for culture reasons. Very handy if we need a tagging role as well because he still tends to win his own ball as well as shutting someone down.

hope someone goes to Andy brayshaw tomorrow because I think if they win that it’ll seriously limit the dockers.

in terms of targets I’d be looking closely at mclean from the swans, jack Gunston from the hawks and Karl Amon is another we have been linked to.

unsure what a Luke Jackson trade looks like but given his potential And the dockers financial investment I imagine it’ll be a steep asking price

Why would we want to open more cap space up if Jackson is leaving? He'll open more than enough, surely? And Harmes wouldn't be on big money.

The fact that Harmes was an absolutely dyed in the wool Demons supporter growing up, might just keep him at the club.

He's also a popular player that can tag and win his own footy as others have said.

Keeping him around seems a similar sort of move to Gus. Important.

There was a rumour a few weeks back that Richmond and North were talking to him about extended deals. Weirdly specific so felt there might be some truth to it

Johannison may have pace, but class is something he certainly doesn’t have

His fall from grace has been quite stark

Kick-started our revival in the GF.  For that reason alone im happy to see him stay.

I will never be able to thank the players enough for that feeling of winning a cup.

Fall?, he never had any class.

He just runs and kicks inaccurately. How he was awarded a Norm Smith over Boyd, Picken, Kennedy and McRae is beyond me

I reckon we will look at any talls available, def/fwd/ruck. Based on the below we need two rucks, one to develop and one to play 2nd ruck who can play fwd. And we need 2 fwds. If we cannot land quality fwds, we may need to recruit a tall back and look to play Petty fwd

We have

  • B Brown (injury and age an issue)
  • T Mac (injury and age an issue)
  • Weideman (depth only, not best 22)
  • M Brown - delist
  • JVR - young kid, got potential
  • May (quality but 31yo starting next season)
  • Lever (quality and only 26)
  • Petty (quality and only 22)
  • Tomlinson (good defensive depth)
  • Turner (young kid, got potential)
  • Gawn (GOAT but 31yo at season start 2023)
  • Jackson - may not be at the club

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
