He doesnโ€™t need to โ€˜fireโ€™ - he needs to play his role. No one else can with TMac out. That is his starting expectation and pass mark.

Might not have been the best term to use, replace it with 'perform'. I'm not expecting a bag of goals by any stretch, but he's a non-contributor at present.

That's simply not true.

As if goody would pick a player who is not contributing

That's classic straight bat Goody though. Personally I don't think you judge how the tall forwards are performing based purely on total shots on goal. Don't think you'd find many who would say they're happy with Ben Brown's form and fact is he has barely contributed to the forward line even taking into account non-scoring efforts.

We need him in reasonable form by finals, if he can't find it this week then it's back to Casey IMO.

We must remember that BB is our most accurate kick for goal (closely followed by BF). It should not be underestimated.ย

I know it has already been said but Chandler with 5 goals and a bucket of possessions doesnt even make it as an emergency

Hope jacko and Gawn are fully fit....

He doesn't have much option atm. At least one of BBB, Mitch or Weid needs to be picked, but none are offering much presently. BBB has the best record and seems the best bet for backing into form, that's why he's picked this week IMO.

You don't really believe out of form senior players are never picked purely out of necessity and/or trying to find form right?

Does my head in that some want BB out and Weid in, what do they think Weid can do that BB isn't ?

ย

That is a pretty strong side

question. ย Is it our finals side ?ย

Tmac will need a couple of games to get match fit and up to speed. ย Donโ€™t think he will be available.ย

really looking to see how we match up against jeelong. 2nd match up in last three weeks the top two. ย I think we should expect some more great games and prevail in them all.ย

5 goals against very weak opposition means jacks... though.

Ben Brown has been OK the last 3 games I think. Much better than his previous run of games. It's difficult being the only key forward defenders have to worry about and it would be great if he can clunk a couple of extra marks per game but as long as he's not getting outmarked and is bringing the footy to ground then he's playing his role.

I disagree with all the posters who have got it in their heads that Brown's only job is 'bring the ball to ground'. I think that's used by Goody as a defence of his players and have 0 doubt he would want moreย  than that from our key forwards.

I agree it makes it harder for him being the only key forward, which is why my original comment was around that very thing.

Showers and 13 degrees forecast perhaps not a night for Big men. Cats will ruck Stanley and Blicavs and Hawkins in the forward line pushing everyone in the back

Itโ€™s going to be a wet ball so going shorter up forward makes sense. Our ground ball game has to be on.ย

And how many did melky kick against jacks?

Chandler would be bonkers not to request a trade

In 2020 our leading goal scorer was Fritsch with 22 goals.

We missed finals. We needed a key forward. We picked up a 200cm key forward with runs on the board. He played a key part in our premiership win last year and is currently on 20 goals for the current season, the second most for the club.

Our 2nd key forward is injured and posters on Demonland think Brown is lucky not to be dropped?

Could we possibly put Thomo up forward with Brown?

IMO it would take some pressure off Brown as he is a big strong body and aggressive.ย

Just a thought.ย

That's not his only job, but it's a key part of his role and something Weideman has struggled to do. If we had someone better at playing that role they would be in, but we don't.

Besides Brown has kicked 5 goals in the last 3 games and really should've had two more. Would be nice if he was averaging 2 a game but it's not like he's been unsighted.

Hes also missed 3 games (Essendon, Port and GWS) so you'd think he'd have at least another 4 or 5 goals from those 3 games.

He's averaging 1.7 goals a game. Ideally he'd be up around 2.5 goals a game but he's had to play a lone hand for the last 5 or 6 weeks since TMac went down. He can play better but I don't see him being dropped.

Not sure what Weid has got to do with anything? Nowhere did I say he should be playing currently or that he's in better form than Brown. We're talking about Brown's form and lack of impact and how it might be hard for him to turn it around without proper tall forward support.

"Really should've had two more"? Come on mate.

So are you saying his form is fine? Fair bit of defending going on when all I've said is he needs to contribute more or he could be dropped to find form. We need him in form for finals. Weid and Mitch Brown aren't reliable options, TMac may not be around, Jackson isn't a forward, so whatever it takes to get him back up we need to do IMO. Currently he's not leading well, not taking contested marks, not applying pressure, and in a fair few games he's been outmarked so hasn't even brought it to ground.

I just want him in form for finals, we'll need him even more than last year.

Ross Lyon just tipped against us again. He canโ€™t stand us. I wonder what we have done to upset him.

And Lloydy picked against us because of our forward line issues.

Too funny.ย

I'm waiting to see what sort of tape measure they are going to use. From when the ball leaves the foot, or just a plain guess.

And of course for us it's just play on anyway.

ย

On the selection issues my beer is tasting normal.

Good team selections. Gawn and Jackson had to be selected if fit.

Our defence and the midfield are both in good form, well drilled and applying pressure all over the ground.

We have problems in attack but scoring enough goals doe not seem to be the problem. More the inconsistent nature of how we score them. I liked the move of Petracca playing more forward and I could see that being used more often this season. Give us flexibility and a point of difference. Brown, Fristch, resting ruck and/or Petracca with a fleet of smaller players feeding off them sounds like a good setup if they can make it work.

Last week we had 24 scoring shots with 14 goals from 10 goalkickers. The week before 37 scoring shots with 16 goals and, again, 10 goalkickers. 21 behinds against the Lions.

We must be getting something right.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
