POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Adelaide

There is no doubt that the umpires made some mistakes.  They generally do.

Whether that is down to incompetence, unconscious crowd bias or corruption is in the eye of the beerholder.

The West End supporters were satisfied with the umps. VB supporters not so much.

I never used to dislike them so much when playing.

We need our forward setup humming on Thurs because you can bet Geelong will have theirs up and running. They might even crack the 80 point mark against us.

At least we won't have to worry about their backline smacking our on ballers after they get rid of the ball.

Question without notice, willmoy.  Who is Neal Lewis that you have listed among your favourite players?

He kicked 2 goals for the day,  both from dubious free kicks.

Yea but no May should be taken off him 🤦‍♂️

I'm not sure if it is across the board but I reckon Clarrie gets a raw deal from the umps.   Won the coaches award last year is well ahead so far this year.

Will be interesting how he fares this year in the Brownlow.

I agree with this and it isn't just Oliver.  Gawn has had a terrible run in terms of being blocked, thumped from behind, impeded.  In 2018 he bolted in the AFLCA award yet finished only 4th in the Brownlow.  He wasn't even the top votegetter from his own team.  I cringe when I see some of the pathetic, soft frees dished out to blokes like Harry McKay yet Gawn can be literally assaulted and the commentators laugh it off as "he had to really earn that one".

I think Lever was facing Fogarty but it was still unwarranted away from the field of play.

Here is the moment of impact.

Lever never faces Fogarty, just moves him away from his team mates and congratulates their efforts.

This is effectively a coward punch from Fogarty. He punches a bloke who isn't even looking at him, who isn't engaged with him. It's just assault.

Was at the game

‘the roar of affirmation’ is real.  Umpires inevitably get sucked in to appeasing the crowd.  It is amazing to witness

Not sure what was said about the Collingwood game but the umpires were definitely told what was required of them after half time in that one

It is a thing

Another great team effort led by our midfield brigade and superbly backed up by the Mens Department with excellent cameos from our forwards at critical times during the game. You have to love this group playing in a hostile environment with no recognised rucks and receiving absolutely no pretection or fairness from the Magoo’s and still able to achieve a run away win. Top effort Dees.!!!!

If the AFL want umpires to be respected, make them full time professionals,  pay them properly and stop the constant rules changes.

The fact is though, it is easier and cheaper just to control what commentators and media say about them, all spin and no action, what Gil does best.

Possibly one of the advantages of having a full-time umpiring academy would be the luxury of extra training time to familiarise umps with the tricks being used to milk free kicks.

currently the umpires seem to be a bit like legislators trying to catch up with cryptocurrency crooks: always one step behind the latest scam

The AFL might even introduce an  education module called

“How umpiring can influence the results of games“

with a half day on crowd control (of umpires)

Imagine the commentators today saying that, it would be their last game behind the microphone.

I don’t respect our commentators, but the AFL does pressure the networks not to be honest and I have been told influence the showing of replays from umpiring errors

Similarly with politics, especially in the USA currently.  Media generally do as they are told, at risk of being snubbed / cancelled.

Gotta pay for Robbie Williams instead right?

Gil gets his priorities right.  “Match day experience” is far more important than a good fair game of football.

My assessment:

Kozzie's by far the lesser of the three:  was in play, careless, low force = Fine.

Fogarty: behind play, deliberate, medium force (I think Lever went off after it) = one match but it won't be rated as that,  More likely low impact so just a fine.

The forearm to Clarrie's head:  High contact , low/medium force = one match but mist likely a fine if at all.  No discussion on it in the media so MRO may just overlook it.

Christian will do as he is told.

Any news on Kozzie’s strike?

If they grade it as medium and intentional then he’s cooked for next week.

$2k fine.  Just handed down

What I haven't seen elsewhere is that, Fogarty hurt his finger when giving another one in the guts to Lever, when Lever was in front taking a mark. I normally like Dunstall but that was a [censored] comment. I was a bit annoyed Jack didn't sit him on his [censored] with a good push.

So one in play as a clumsy tackle (not saying it was acceptable but it was part of play) and the other an off the ball act, and they get the same penalty?

Mate, I'm not VB. I'm Melbourne Bitter. pun fully intended.

I know there are worse (BT, James -sure there are more) but last night Anthony Hudson took it to a new level. His barracking for Adelaide and screaming (heavily described as commentary) was just plain embarrassing and most unprofessional. If he commentates next Thursday at the cattery he just wont be able to control himself. Foxtel should ensure that there is a box of tissues next to his seat.

AH has been schooled by Bruce Mac apparently. Is frantic and hysterical in turns and two octaves above what is necessary. In a word, appalling.

He also did a cheap hit to Lever’s ribs after Lever intercepted a mark in the 3rd Quarter

1 and 2 Demonstone I don't believe 3.

Nor do I, old dee.  However, some have convinced themselves that it's all rigged.

To quote Hanlon's razor:  "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity".

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
