Jack Viney says hi 👋

Was Todd at the club when we drafted Jack? Genuinely can’t remember but I have the feeling he wasn’t.

Wasn't Todd reported as at odds with Prendergast over Toumpas instead of Wines? Was definitely at the club at the time of that draft.

Yes as far as I recall, had to ring Wines up and tell him that MFC weren't going to draft him any longer.

My memory is BP left the club early 2012 and went to Carlton. Todd came in and was calling the shots at trade time late 2012. He has to wear the Wines non selection. He knew how good Wines was and knew Toumpas as well. I thought the reason given as to why we went for Toumpas was that we didn’t need 2 in and under bulls. To be fair all the experts were a big wrap for Toumpas but we never saw why that was.

My impression of Toumpas was that he had all the skills but didn't think well under pressure.

He left brown nuggets every time he heard footsteps.. would never have been drafted under our current contested ball framework.

Could it have possibly been that Todd felt that, if we had selected Wines, he would have been a selection competition for Jack in their early days?

Worth noting that the player taken with the pick we sent to GWS for Hogan (we held pick 3 & 4 due to Scully compo traded 3 & used 4 on Toumpas) ended up being Lachie Plowman. Plowman had an underwhelming career, largely at Carlton, and he has now just retired. Not a whole lot of quality out of that 2012 crop as it transpired. Thankfully Viney worked out!

Another traded pick that started with Melbourne, moved to Adelaide in the Lever deal and finished with Carlton in the Gibbs trade was pick 10 from 2017. Carlton used the pick to select Lachie O’Brien, who they just delisted. Thing’s didn’t turn out too badly for us in the end.

I seem to recall that Jack, despite being best mates with Wines, said that Toumpas was the better choice.

Company line.

My recollection is that Todd didn’t initially come back in a list management position, and that the list manager at the time was one Tim Harrington.

You forgot the urban legend of Viney and Neeld coming to blows as Todd wanted to select Wines and Neeld wanted Toumpas.  This was mentioned daily on Demonland for about three years.

This is actually factual incorrect.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Ollie Wines sister in Maddie about a year or so after he was drafted and she started out as a local journo around the region.

We crossed paths at a regional awards function one night and i actually asked this question to her.

Melbourne had certainly had Wines in their sights and this was purely because Todd thought GWS were going to pick Toumpas with their early picks. Our recruiting staff thought he was a top 2 genuine talent based off his senior SANFL experience as well as winning a flag at such a young age.

They were mostly set on Wines until it was made known fairly soon that GWS were then going to pass Toumpas.

Maddie confirmed it was actually Todd Viney who made the decision even though Neeld preferred Wines, but Neeld had enough faith in Viney and the rest of the recruitment.

Viney informally Wines family and whilst they were fairly disappointed in the decision they certainly didn't hold it against Todd as they knew it was a professional decision.

So yes, unfortunately it was Todd who made the blunder.

I recall hearing this too, some time later, although I doubted it’s veracity.

Having said that, Viney may have taken ownership for the decision and responsibility for informing the family, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the decision was in fact his or his alone.

Anyway, back to Noah Yze, how is he tracking?

Does he look like he could improve to get to AFL, or at least VFL standard, to get drafted perhaps as a rookie?

Interesting that Noah is listed as 189cm and 84kg good size and wt for a 17yo. Let’s hope he has a great 2024 and he nominated us.!!

He was an assistant at Hawthorn, then coached at Moama (?), then an assistant at Adelaide, before returning to MFC. So far off.

Wow - definitely not the build I was expecting from an Yze Jr.

Great to see kids from the 90s/00s players coming through!  Good luck to him!

    TRAINING: Monday 20th January 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator attended training out at Casey Fields to bring you the following observations from Preseason Training. GATOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS There were 5 in the main rehab group, namely Gawn, Petracca, Fullarton, Woewodin and Lever.  Laurie was running laps by himself, as was Jefferson.  Chandler, as has been reported, had his arm in a sling.  Lindsay did a bit of lap running later on. Some of the ''rehab 5'' participated in non contact drills and b

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
