I can't get this comment from Goodwin out of my head after the win at GC.

28s mark

Are we seriously just riding games out to preserve our bodies?

He didn't say that. What he said was we focused on our defensive structure/skills rather than trying to attack. Every side should do this if they're  capable of doing it. You attack when you're behind because there's no other option. If you've got a comfortable lead you eliminate as  much risk as possible, unless of course you're totally dominating so you put the opponent away.

No Cripps no Carlton. Pretenders really

Says a lot. Tag the Shiz out of Cripps when he comes back from his injury.

Not throwing out the baby with the bathwater but If the Blues were any chance this year they would have found a way to win today.

So how far can we go undefeated this season? Who is the most likely to knock us off?

So ... Demons win. Check.

Geelong win. Damn.

Pies lose. Check.

Dons win, just. But in a way that has their fans spitting chips. Pass mark.

Hawks lose. Check.

Blues lose. Check.

I rate this weekend 8/10

I would rate Blues lose as a hallelujah at least Mazer.

Hate to say it, but Geelong I worry about the most

She actually seems to have improved her calling, but that voice is inexcusable, regardless of what it says.

Sorry but Kelli Underwood does not call the game she commentates. Poorly. Cliche after cliche and then she tells you how old each player is and where they hail from. Kelli cannot help her voice but it far from her worst asset.

In early season I’d agree they have a  score to settle. Also Lions have the cattle too.

All I am worried about, is cats trying to dis-credit our next 10 goal win against them, with the gastro excuse!

Spot on.

Defences are the foundation of premiership teams. Goodwin has always said as did craig jennings that once a team gets behind they need to take more risks to make up deficit.

Goodwin aims to get the opposition consistently into these scenarios.

Oh man Jamie Elliott out again! Love watching him play. Been around for 10 years and only played 139 games.

And who’s  to say they won’t go 4-2 against Brisbane, Geelong and Sydney?

And who’s  to say they won’t beat us at the G, a venue where we’ve been quite frankly pathetic against St Kilda in recent years?

IMO they’re a team on the rise and they’ve got a terrific percentage as a launching pad.

I'm to say they won't go 4-2 against Brisbane, Geelong and Sydney.

(Feel free to bump this post at the end of the year if they do)

Derwayne must be her mentor as he does all of that plus far, far worse. 'If you've just joined us', 'wherever in the world you're watching'......

Love it @Lucifers Hero

Not a pot at you at all...and isn't there a massive shift in the supporters understanding and THUS the language used by us, because we now have a lens of what 'works' to win football matches consistently. It's also not just our - defense (back 6) running parallel to the strength of our 'defence' is still the system - which I still count as a a Goodwin version of gengenpressing.

Not sure why this is even said as the parts of my post you omitted in the 'quote' talked to the lack of defence, pressure and waltzing the ball out of the middle and end to end goals.  I thought those points made it obvious there was a breakdown in defence all over the ground and not just the back 6 (in the Hawks/Saints game up to half time; stopped watching after that).

And not sure the observations required any special language or a special lens on 'what works'.  Simply put there was a lack of effort to put on pressure, across the board and lack of structure to defend the op's ball movement.

I don't read the 'tactics/game plans' thread so haven't delved into 'gengenpressing' and the like.  I have a simple view of a club's defensive system:  minimizing i50 and keep the opp score to 60-70 pts (like we do) which require 18 players to defend and pressure in line with team structures and roles.

When a club can consistently achieve those 2 goals and win games then I will respect their defensive systems regardless of the methods they use to achieve thm which could and probably would be different to ours because of different game plans and different personnel.

MRO will probably say:  Accidental, Low Impact, High = Fine at most.

Preuss would say he didn't know where the player was behind him and the strike was part of his momentum while spinning around.

Don't agree with it but suspect he will play next week.

That didn't age well 😐

A Giant's appeal may be on the cards.

This is what I don't get about the Underwood criticism. Sure she doesn't have the loveliest voice, but does Gerard? Then we have the ones who do horserace-style commentary on TV, and then we have the clown prince of commentators, BT. She doesn't really stand out that much.

Forget the fine I'd suspend Smith for 2 weeks.

Forget the players in this game.

Having just seen the Hawkins push in the back , I reckon the officiating umpire should be suspended this week for stupidity.

Not for the decision - we all make mistakes - but the ridiculous explanantion trying to justify the error / non-call to harris Andrews.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
