Miking up the umps has been the worst innovation in TV broadcasting. So annoying and distracting. At times it can help to explain a decision but a lot of the time we have to suffer the running commentary that does nothing to enlighten us. It’s just twaddle. At least tone it down or use their comments selectively to explain a contentious decision. We do not need to hear the umps voices the whole time. They should be seen but not heard (most of the time).

I'd rather hear the umps than the commentators. Though I agree with others that the umps should do less 'coaching',

We did it in Round 1 too, throwing Fritsch behind the ball from centre square bounces in the fourth when the game was very much done.

And against Richmond a few years ago from memory when Jordan McMahon kicked the winning goal after the siren......

I can't speak for others, but I can't watch the footy without sound.

I've tried muting, and it simply doesn't work for me. It feels as if I'm watching it in an air lock.

It's not just the crowd noise, it's all the other ambient noise, not least the ball being kicked.

I've also tried turning the volume down and listening to a radio feed. That is better than no sound, but only just. It always falls out of sync and the sound is variable.

But good to know muting works for you.

I know it has been mentioned here many times but if you had the option of muting the commentators while still having the crowd noise, umpires and Gawnie saying ‘that’s ruck craft big boy’ then I’d take it every single time.

Me too x a million.

And I'd pay for it too.

It would be dead easy to do as I assume all sound come in in channels.

All they would need to do is not put the commentator channel through one external feed.

Don't agree Living in SEQ when last week in Melb for the GF Replay  it seemed  more humid than in Qld.

Seems like Climate  Change is occurring before our eyes. Some Victorian friends have remarked on the humidity this summer in Melbourne!
My T shirt and Polo were soaked wet by the time I walked from MCG to my City Hotel.!!

Yeah, that Rd 1 night game was somewhat warm and humid, but from my recient experience somewhat the exception to the rule.  My regular 20min walk from home to the station would usually result in beads of sweat rolling down my back at 6am in the morning in SEQ, due largely to the humidity and secondly due to it being near enough degrees even at that early part of the day.

I was at that match with my thirdborn. It was in 2009. Bailey  was 12 years old at that time.

I was super impressed by the Suns to be honest. i think they'll definitely improve this season based on that.

Didn't let us kick ahead, some good individual performances. Wonder how long they'll be able to maintain this effort this year.

Went up for this game, was surprised how many Dees fans there were at the game, nice little stadium too, was worried it was going to rain so got tickets near the back, false alarm but still good view.

We did what we needed to do, and no more.

Pocketed the 4 points.

Keep doing that until the last few rounds then unleash, again.

Again he's got that good footballer's instinct to change both speed and lateral steps on either side depending on where threat feels from..

Agree with the previous posts on the commentators.

Dwayne Russell is frustratingly OTT. Dermott hates us and every time he commentates on our games focuses almost exclusively on our opponent. And Healy is the new Sandy Roberts; so incredibly past it.

There are so many good commentators available, it baffles me that Dwayne and Gerard are doing multiple calls per Round on TV/radio.

We all know that Brereton/Dwayne/Healy/BT and the rest are terrible commentators.  No arguments there.

Why then do highly intelligent people (ie. Demon fans) make a conscious decision to listen to them when they have the option of pressing the mute button?

Further, what do people who choose to listen to these clowns think is being achieved by clogging up threads with their constant whining about the standard of commentary?

Nobody is forcing you to listen.  It's your decision.

I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone can watch football in silence.

I'll take rubbish commentary over no sound at all.

Not sure about so many, but agree there are others who are so much better. Almost all of whom are calling the women's games and/or the vfl and practice games.

I watched the Sandy Casey game and thought the commentary was excellent. Jack everin and another bloke whose name escapes me.

Two handed (which is all that is needed), play by play call, with only the odd 'special comment'  - and those comments were often really helpful and insightful.

Didn't talk over each other and helped me follow the game because I didn't know all the player's numbers.

Above all, both had obviously both done their pre match preparation and research.

No coincidence, neither were ex afl footballers

The amount of times "he's a bull" was said on the coverage was incredible. I'm the same, I want to hear the crowd noise.

I miss the button where you can silence the commentators and just hear crowd noise.

That's perfectly fine tu and each of us makes that decision.  I'm not trying to tell people to mute the commentary if they would prefer to listen to it.

The point of my post is that if you choose to listen to the commentary knowing full well in advance what it is going to be like, then don't clog up threads complaining about it.  You know what you're going to get.

You don't think that is not a bit reductive DS?

I mean, for people who do choose to listen to the game audio, which would be the overwhelming majority, the performance of the commentary teams has a direct impact on their perception and even enjoyment of the game. It certainly does for me.

This is particularly true for interstate games that posters have to watch live on TV rather than watch the game at the ground.

Given the commentary team is part of how the game is experienced for most posters why it is not fair game, particularly in a post game thread, to discus their performance - and complain about them should they wish.

Saying people shouldn't complain about a subject when they know 'full well what to expect' would disqualify discussion about a range of relevant topics - umpiring standards for example.

You may not be 'trying to tell people to mute the commentary if they would prefer to listen to it', but you are telling them not to post about it.

But plenty of threads have tangential posts that can, and sometimes do, 'clog' them up.

For example often jokes are made, that invite multiple replies, that are of limited interest to many posters or spell checking of players names, because for some such errors are frustrating where most posters could care less.

Shouldn't that read couldn't care less?   :D

No, could care less is a well  established idiom and much used phrase. One I like actually.

The Miriam Webster treats the two phrases as synonymous.

However, I am aware that it frustrates pedants because they believe it to be illogical.

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
