all this discussion on x years

i presume everyone means x years in addition to this year?

correct. l said 3 years then everyone pretty much agreed but didn't like the logic for it and got ants in their pants and got more personal than they need to .. some also said 3 to 5 years

I didn’t know a fait accompli resigning of our flag winning coach beloved by the entire group could bring such trolling beahviour.

He is getting an extension to 2025 or 2026 (hell maybe 2027) and that is that. What is the argument about? How quickly he won the flag?

Quite quickly actually; quicker than Hardwick and Thompson, a year off Clarkson.

Mate not sure why you are now trying to rewrite history re trolling comment.

After I sent a detailed view on our performances under Goody, without any personal or emotive remarks to any of the posters here, you decided to mock me with an image for a cheap laugh and join the pile on. Don't agree with me, many others haven't on here about this topic, but do it in the right way

Re the extension, I have said to 2025 so we aren't far off

Absolutely. As far as I know the relationship between all parties is very good and I have no doubt Goody will be re-signed.

Any inside info on LJ, LN ?

Not at the moment mate. A fair while back I mentioned he was no lock to stay with us long term, but then last year it seemed things became a bit more settled (after some very minor bumps along the road) and last I heard his folks were looking at property in Melbourne. Haven't heard any kind of update for ages now though so not sure where it's at.

Never said it has to be linear progress and understand the ups and downs but we should have made finals more than 2 out of 5 years. I base the performance each year on what we should have achieved based on the easy fixtures we have been getting, our list, injury management, coaching, selection, game plan etc. At the end of 2017 and 2020 posters on here were rabid about our performance to the point many wanted goody gone then. Then there is 2019. So at the very least we have been inconsistent. I have offered an additional 3 years, what are you suggesting an additional 5+ years which would make it 6+ years for an inconsistent coach? Clarkson, Lyon, Scott don't get those kinds of extensions even when their teams have been consistent finalists

Should we have made finals in 2017 and 2020 - well, I can see the clear argument for yes. We lost games against lowly sides that were clear cut opportunities to get in.

We probably used those losses to fuel us to the success of 2018 and 2021 though, so just how much can you mark a guy down for finishing 9th compared to finishing 8th and losing early in finals? 12 wins in 2017 was still a good achievement as was bouncing back in 2020 from such a horror year previous. Fans got emotional about missing finals rather than understanding the win-loss record in both those years were solid achievements given the talent available.

2019 I can barely attribute to Goodwin. In fact a large part of 2019 was due to the success coming too soon in 2018 masking failings in the fitness department, deficiencies and immaturity in the list and yes, issues with the game plan. But I don't think there's a coach around who could've done much better with the healthy and quality of the 2019 list. They couldn't have changed the game plan without any fit players to train up over summer. And the club had made the choice to give Misson the year to finish up and look for a replacement. A decision I thought was ridiculous at the time that now appears to be an absolute genius move.

6 years for any coach would be silly, 5 would be a stretch, but really it depends on buy out clauses and the level of discount multiple years gets us with the soft cap. If anything, the long term successful coaches have highlighted how much list management, fitness and other factors influence winning. Chris Scott's the only long term coach who hasn't had a let down and most actually think Geelong are worse for it!

I can understand if the AFL world thinks he is a bit strange, with the supposed gambling and his infatuation with that ridiculous "energy healer", but he got us to a flag and that is all that matters.

I wouldn't be unhappy with a 3 year extension.

If he got longer I would be fine. Flag in 6 years, pretty good return.

Any further updates as to when Simon Goodwin will sign his contract extension as coach of the MFC?

I still think it will be a 5 year contract extension. But we shall wait and see I guess?

Did anyone else hear John Ralph talk about this last night on Fox?

He said good progress had been made and the extension would be a 3 year extension until 2025.  Then he waffled something about us being a 'tied' to the AFL club so we have to abide their rules, so 2 years were fixed and 1 'floating' (my word not his).

I thought the club went to some length in the last two years to not be a 'tied' to the AFL club ie one that did not need or receive AFL special, covid related financial assistance, so we could run the club and make contracts without being beholden to the AFL's approval.  We are now a very well run club, certainly in the top 5 of the AFL.  It strikes me as odd that the AFL would be involved if we are not a 'tied' club.

I guess In practice it probably doesn't matter whether the contract is 3 years or 2+1 years but 3 years give a stronger endorsement of our Premiership coach than 2+1 years.

Ralph isn't always a reliable reporter.

Nah, people underestimate how many of these things are done and not announced. timing is a great marketing tool for clubs. Goody isn't going anywhere

Would be VERY surprised if this was done and not either announced or leaked.

What timing do you think they would be waiting for?

Who knows? i'm not even necessarily saying that's the case, but it is something that's done, all we know is that Goody wants to stay, and the club wants him to stay and the talks have been ongoing, i'm sure it'll be announced soon.

Yeah 100%, last I heard- which was a fair while back - it was just all those finer details & clauses that were being negotiated. Hope it gets ticked off soon!

I'm guessing here but he's probably asking for a big pay day. And rightly so for what he achieved last year.

Is his salary included in the soft-cap?

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
