Wasn’t actually referring to you as the dropkick mate, just some other posters who have been more provocative in their posts (*cough* Dr.D *cough*). There’s also a difference between calling someone stupid and saying they look stupid. 

But you were alluding to the assistants being the main difference, when in fact it was a multitude of reasons. 

Those inconsistent years were largely due to an immature playing list which needed time to gel. At the end of the day the coach is just one part of the whole system and putting the performance of such a large cohort on one man is just plain wrong.

I haven't mentioned anything in regards to contract length, for what it's worth I think he will get 3 years and that would be about right.

I have pointed out that I think you are wrong in your assumptions and even though you never said the words linear progress your post points to that being a major issue with Goodwin.

You are always going to get these fluctuations with a young developing team.

In 2021 we saw the culmination in a balanced, maturing team. This doesn't happen from nowhere, it takes time to develop.

Mate, stop hiding behind semantics. Whether you implied or said it indirectly, you were being deliberately disrespectful. 

And yes I said the new assistants where the main difference, but I never said they were the only difference. Of course there were other reasons e.g. Darren Burgess getting the fitness up another notch, players appearing to take more ownership and growing, getting the game plan right, goody learning and improving, mids working better together, new players in BB and Bowey ... it all adds up.

Unfortunately the things that went wrong in 2017 and 2020 are largely owned by the coach even if its not all on his head e.g. game plan, selection, players having the confidence to perform under pressure relative to their age and maturity

Disrespectful? Come on mate, you’re seriously not that precious are you? 

Sorry, but the logic that the coach is somehow responsible for most/all of the bad things occurring at the club and is barely a fraction of the good things is - and always will be - a silly view. 

Of course the coach is just a fraction of the workings of a club but you have to apply that to both the good and the bad, not just one. Otherwise it doesn’t make sense.

Re coaching performance, Goody has said himself that he wasn't at his best and coping in the period prior to 2021 so I'm not sure how you give him a pass when he doesn't. The coach sets the direction and is the most influential role at the club. His contract KPI's talk about where he finishes on the ladder. 

So how many years would you extend him for? And please don't say 3 years and agree with me after all the back and forth.

I think he will be offered 3 to 4 years, but he may only want to extend for another 2 years taking him up until the end of the 2024 season.

He, along with his team, have built this team and clearly have their trust. I think he has earned the right to coach this group through their premiership window.

 The duration is likely to be 3-5 years, I’m not fussed by the actual number, the important thing is that he is treated with the respect he has earned. We don’t need to rehash things that went wrong 3 years ago, they have been reviewed and the lessons learned are part of what made this team what it is. He is undeniably a very good coach. Not only did he coach us to a premiership, he won the award for the best coach, so his peers obviously rate him as well.

No you haven't, 3 years is about the norm, so you don't have to be Einstein to figure that out. I don't agree on anything, I just expect, for reasons stated, that it will be 3 years.

I agree DD this group have the potential to continue to achieve at the highest level for a number of years and 3 - 5 years to my mind both rewards Simon for his achievements and provides the incentive to keep building the team into the future for further success.

My guess. 5 years which will take him through to the end (or close to) of our window. Can’t see why he wants to go home in the next couple of years when he has done all the work to get us into a position to contend? Why watch a replacement capitalise on his hard work?

I say this as a long time critic. He has earned the right to stay on his terms. The players love him, the footy department love him. Benchmark against Hardwick, Clarkson etc. and pay him the going rate.
