I'm hoping Dogga stays as he is likely to be a very special player.  He's showing all the signs - particularly given his age - but he's not there yet. He could be anything - the next Schwarz pre knee, Kouta, Goodes or something unlike anyone else that has played - or he may end up as a talented tall utility that can play anywhere but never masters a position.

It makes me think if I were a Freo supporter and we were giving up this year and next year's first round picks and Meek (as an example) and potentially losing some other players who think Jackson will take their spot or eat up too much of their salary cap... is this deal worth it?  Isn't this selling the farm?  Are they really just Jackson away from a premiership or do they need a few more young talented players coming through?

I'm not doubting his value particularly when you see what the biggest trades have netted in recent years... but I feel like if it goes ahead, it could blow up in Freo and Luke's face.   There will be a lot of pressure on the kid to perform if this is what they have to give up.

The whole 'next David Schwarz'  narrative  really does get a good flogging on here, but he's no way at that level at all, or ever will be.

Ox pre knee was primed in becoming a genuine superstar of the competition. At one stage he was on par with Wayne Carey as the best player of the competition. I rate Carey alongside Leigh Matthews and Gary Ablett Snr as one of the best ever players we've seen come through.

Luke Jackson will be a very good ruckman in years to come. Imo I think he is a tad short for a ruckman in being able to reach the levels of a Dean Cox or Max Gawn of being that star factor in his rightful position.

Close comparisons imo would be a Jeff White or Stefan Martin who were able to win the footy 20-25 possessions a game and play as that extra midfielder due to their high athleticism.

So much still to play out. We really should just forget about it, and re-visit after we win the flag.

What happens if LJ plays another key role in a GF win, and Freo bombs out early. Be so very tough to leave. And he could back-flip a decision at any moment during his many post flag celebration beers 🍻

I got excited here but the bloke who posted this admitted in another thread he was just trolling Freo supporters. I think having the Melksham jumper snatch as his avatar might have also been a hint.

BF in a nutshell..

I wonder with Mundy "retiring" if this adds $$$ to their offer for LJ. Can any of the WA posters confirm if he was on big money. I thought he played well last week and was a little surprised that he had announced his retirement. He might of been pushed into retirement.

With the exception of Buddy and his long term deal, players of Mundy's age would probably be on year-to-year deals, with a mid tier base salary plus heavy incentives. Given how consistently great Mundy has been, he would still be earning good coin.

No doubt that it frees up coin for Jackson.

That poster just admitted they were trolling. 😒

Edit: Soz, this has been mentioned already.

clint, if you really want to troll the freo wanchors, go back there and suggest that freo are considering a swap of andrew brayshaw for dogga. naturally you heard it from a good source close to the club.

Yeah I agree he's not going to be the next Schwarz.  But if he continues at the rate of improvement he is going at since debuting then he could end up as a genuine superstar of the comp.  I mentioned Goodes and Kouta because they could play anywhere and troubled teams due to their unique assets - too tall, agile, strong - for anyone to go with them.

But I agree that I think he's unlikely to be able to do this solely as a ruckman.

Obviously everyone has their own opinions but I think he's likely to be a better player than White or Martin - White might have him covered at Centre bounces but I think Jackson would have him covered once the ball hits the ground and with his ability to work in traffic.  And while Stefan Martin has been an incredible player with unique abilities (strength and speed for a big man) I don't think he has the natural ability / game sense that Jackson has - certainly didn't at the age Jackson is now!

But my main point was, all of this is hypothetical.  It's still so much for Freo to pay when you don't know if he will reach those heights.

Yeah could be worse. I could have compared him to Jack Watts but he was ridiculously soft.

Jacko at least cracks in.

Feel like the best proxy for Jackson I’ve seen is Paddy Ryder who won an Anzac medal as a young ruck after taking over due to injury mid game. Not dissimilar to Jackson in the grand final last year during the 3rd qtr. Also handy as a resting fwd but not to the point he could play as a genuine fwd full time.

It’s what makes Freo throwing big money at Jackson so bizarre when they arguably have the best young ruck already in Darcy. Surely they have other needs to address first. Jackson will probably go ok as fwd but you really want to be playing him as a 1st ruck to get full value and in a few years that would naturally happen at dees. At Dockers baring injury he might never get the chance.

In my opinion, Jackson will sign a two year deal with the Dees...

Why...? Fremantle don’t have the Picks to land him this year. And Jackson will do right by the Dees and not walk to West Coast in the pre-season draft for nothing...!
Cerra couldn’t get to the Dees last year because we had no picks! That’s really why he went to Carlton for Pick 6.

If Jackson is going to WA. He is going to West Coast for Pick 2 and there future 1st rounder and possibly a fringe forward or ruck.

Agree mate, I can't believe that he could get to freo when they have zip to give us. For two years the media has said superstar superstar but are happy to report he's as good as signed with a club that has very little or willing to trade to us.

Freo would have to find the picks and /or players. Bulldogs gave up pick 6 and their Captain for Tom Boyd. So i expect Freo will have to cough up a lot to snare Luke at his age, talent and room for growth.

Dunno, would he be earning that much? Would probably be on the veteran's list too so they save there.

Freo 1st round pick plus Darcy for Luke and some loose change?

Darcy contracted to Freo to 2024 and allegedly on around $600k. Good chance to leave Freo in 2024 in  any case.

Freo demanded and got pick 2 for Lachie Weller. That would value Jackson as the whole city of Fremantle.

Is that still a thing?

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
