The eagles can't trade their first round pick unless they pick up a second one in the trade period - I believe they have only used 1 first round pick in the last 4 drafts 

I really don't see why Luke would even consider leaving his mates and a team that is flying high - the eagles are a complete rabble and have nothing to trade that would be considered acceptable anyway

Jackson will sign, I dont expect it to be a long term 5+ year deal, but 2/3 years. Now that Goodwin has signed on for 2 years, its a whole club approach. Finish what we have started. 2025 might be the year when the band splits up but it wont be before hand.

I have actually lost a lot of my emotional connection to player as I've aged and with the trade world and free agency increasing all the time.

So sadly, I don't really mind now what happens as we will be compensated well and its up to us to work out who to get with faith in our development systems in place now.

I will say however it is hugely unlikely that he ends up at the Eagles.  They need more talent coming through and the cost of picks wouldn't assist them at all.  They have nothing that would satisfy us in terms of players IMO.  He'll stay for 2 years minimum at a decent wage.

I'm thinking the Eagles will load up on high end picks, get them in there system over the next 3 seasons and then look for a Luke like player when they become free agents or trade for needs when they're back in the window.

Like the Melbourne model over the last few seasons..... bloody perfection right there in how we went about it.

I agree but they would have had to part with multiple picks to get English too. He is a good player that's on the way up so it seems WCE are desperate for that young ruck.

A lot can happen in 2 - 3 years at his age. Life and priorities can change massively in that time frame.

If we offered him a long term contract right now it would be for peanuts as we wouldn't have significant amounts of cap space.  

Also, you can't offer a kid long term deals based on potential.  Yes he has shown some great moments and we're all excited by what he might bring but you save that kind of cap space and contract term for your proven A Graders.  Gawn, Trac, Salem and what will definitely be Clarry next year.

2-3 years protects both parties as if he's good enough then and taking the league by storm, he'll demand an even bigger contract which we'd find a way to get sorted.  I'd rather gamble on the fact that once he's a gun we need to pay overs to retain him rather than paying someone overs now based on potential.

Like it or lump it, there is every chance he could be a man child and may have peaked early in his career like a Darling or Hogan.  Or even someone like Rory Lobb who, without meaning to offend, is just a solid B grader..

I'd rather us lose a player who has the potential to be great over one that is already great and proven (Clarry next year).

His manager would be thinking about time after Gawn (and May, Viney) etc. There will be big coin available once our older stars are out of the picture and if we don't pay it, someone else will.

I'd be delighted if he signed for 2 more years. The window won't get any more open in 2025 than it is now.

I do agree in that I'd prefer to lose Jackson over Oliver. But I'd probably just about prefer to lose anyone else over Jackson. It's taken Geelong 10 years to find a ruckman and they still don't have one. If Jackson leaves, we're screwed in finding a ruckman. 

There's nothing in it for Jackson to sign a 2-3 year deal. Clubs could offer him an 8-10 year deal right now. Freo/WCE still may. The potential is what is driving his value. In a lot of sense, the less he plays, the more he is valued.  He isn't going to reach his full potential whilst Gawn is around anyway so his value will always be handbraked. If Jackson was sole ruck right now, I think he'd be an AA candidate.

All energies must be focussed on re-signing the absolute champion of our footy club and the possible 2022 brownlow winner on a 5-7 year deal.

If that means that Jackson won't be offered the $800-$1M a year he's asking for, then so be it and he goes to a club that won't be playing finals for 5 years.

And I can't see how West Coast can satisfy us with a trade given they can't trade their current first rounder. We would have to accept a future first rounder and a current second rounder for LJ.

Maybe Freo have better assets to trade with?

I think it would mean he is keeping that option open at this stage but isn't totally sure. He's loving current life at MFC and is thinking short to medium term which is perfectly fine for a guy who we need to remember is still only 20 y.o.

Whether we like it or not there is the business and agent side of this too. Why would you agree to lock your client in long term right now when his stock is only going to go up? Not to mention the new CBA and TV rights deal coming up. 

I would be absolutely stoked if he signed for 2 - 3 years. He might decide to go back eventually but he also might decide Melb is the place for him.
