Tom Mac, Hunt, Spargo, ANB, Viney, Brayshaw,Tomlinson, Fritsch, Harmes, JJ and Sparrow.

Question: Know what these 11 players have in common.

Answer: Plenty of the experts on DL wanted them gone over the last few years.

Obviously, the thing with trading is if you have to give up something to get something. We gave up pick 2 (Kelly) to get Salem, Hunt and Tyson. Watts to get Fritsch. We gave up Hogan to get May. Second rounders for Langdon, Hibberd and Melksham. OK, these are relative successes but not every trade is a success.

If trading Weed meant we could get another key forward that plays more than six good games in six years then I'm all for it. He has currency I'm sure. If the club thinks he is worth holding onto then I'm fine with that too.

To be fair even the experts at the Club were happy for both TMc and ANB to go this time last year.

I think it’s illuminating that I’m yet to hear our coach mention Sam as a potential “IN” during our finals campaign, not once and many others being touted…

Given TMac’s average form, … not a word that Weid could step up.

How long can we wait?

I’m so 50/50 on Weed particularly after Choco gave him a pump up. You’d have to take that alone as a very good reason to stick it out a bit longer.
We’re not in contention draft wise to pluck a King twin like power forward any time soon.
If he wants to play in a team that going to challenge for a few more years to come he stays and works harder than ever before.
If he wants to walk into a middle to lowly ranked club and play games immediately he leaves.

I think the issue will be one of money and contract.

On his performance this year it would be a big move by the club to offer him more than 2 years with a strong performance based component. There are other clubs who will have no trouble offering three years on more guaranteed money.

For a player of Weid's age these are his money years but he might be content with one year at melbourne in an attempt to build up his 2023 price.

The one unknown is T Macs late season form slump. Could that be an influencer.

The only thing I do know is that at the very best we will be offered a late second rounder for him.

19 for weid is a fantastic deal.

I really would be stressed about our lack of back up key forwards however.

I think Petty would make a great forward but you make a good point.

If Weiderman does leave just means you keep M Brown and M Daw on your list for 2022 whilst you try to identify another KFP either through draft of trade over the next 18 months.

There are a lot of MFC Players that are going to be sitting where  he will be sitting in the next two games. They will be all reflecting partially on the same subject...

Can Declase play a key forward role?

If Turner comes on and can help with key defence roles and with Tomlinson back, then Petty can go forward as he has done early on.

If we get Andrew that is another future forward.

I still think Bradtke can improve and maybe pinch hit forward or back.

Lastly we identify another young key forward either in the draft or trade.

There are options if Weid goes,

Declase is more of a utility who is capable of playing as a tall defender. Turner will hopefully learn from May and Lever to fill in the breach when there’s time to for them to go. We aren’t guaranteed of getting  Andrew and Bradtke is said to be less than 50/50 to remain. The best option you’ve suggested is Petty to go forward. The next is we draft a young key tall. Otherwise, do our best to keep him.

I don't thin T Mac is in a form slump. He has not kicked goals lately but if you look at the Brisbane final you will see that although he does not mark he is in all the contests and when the ball came to ground goals resulted. For example Kossies fab goal in that game was from a T Mac ruck contest in the fwd pocket. I think the coach is happy with T Mac and thats why no mention of Weid.

Rosman needs to start getting opportunities next year to show what he has, similar to jack watts it’s time to get what we can for weid and go again, nothing to say we can’t get some underrated slightly mature player like Fritsch again with whatever we get in return.

There hasn't been an opportunity for Rosman - our wings have excelled this year you may have noticed!

He also was drafted with the knowledge that he had a bit of work to do to get up to senior speed.

If we can’t get anything decent for him, then keep him. He’s decent depth at worst and won’t command a big salary. Still has potential at 24 to develop further and play an important role in future seeing as our other KPFs are all nearing the end of their careers.

That seems a pretty sharp turn from all the talk (including from the club itself) during the year being about the Dees being keen to keep him but Weid weighing up his options.

Things can change of course, but not totally sold on this report. Not that I wouldn't trust the Herald Sun of course...

We have no key forward depth. Wouldn't be surprised if Weid signs on for 12 mths if he gets no significant interest

Worth a last chance but if he gets delisted he will be picked up as spare parts in the PSD by another club. Just like we picked up Daw.

It appears not much "circling" is going on. He has no trade value so I say hold onto him. Hopefully he has an uninterrupted preseason and surprises us all next year

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
